Classification for World War One contents in the Europeana Collections 1914-1918 project
This document contains the results of the Classification working group’s work.
General remarks:
• In general each partner can annotate its content with any kind of additional information.
• Besides the individual classification of objects, the consortium developed a common classification for the EC1418 content on a minimum level. It is
intended to be used
o in addition to the standard classifications to reach a common retrievability of WW1 objects beyond the border of the single collection.
o for as many objects as possible, depending on the single partners’ prerequisites like the technical ability to automatically annotate the EC1418
classification, necessary effort for manual classification, inappropriate item types for classification, lack of available metadata
• Metadata shall be annotated
o 1) with information on SUBJECTS as well as
o 2) with information on OBJECT TYPES.
• For “SUBJECTS” a selection of WW1 related subject headings from LCSH is the preferred way to annotate the metadata with information on the
subject/topic. LCSH is most likely going to be supported by Europeana (in the medium term) and it can be used free of licensing fees. On the long run,
this might be a step which supports the retrievability of objects in several languages.
• The selected LCSH items are primarily subject headings with an identifier. A few exceptions have been made for important subjects (from the project's
point of view) which do not have an identifier. Broader terms are preferred over closer terms in general.
• The metadata sent to Europeana shall comprise both, the identifier as well as the clear text label.
• For the annotation of metadata containing information about the OBJECT TYPE a list based on the UGC project’s object types will be used. The list has
been expanded to include key terms for the EC1418 project.
