Team Up to Save Lives
5,000 DMV CUSTOMERS PER DAY
SIGNING UP TO DONATE LIFE
With 20,000 people in need of life-saving
transplants in California alone, DMV and Donate
Life California have teamed up with a new challenge for the state’s drivers: sign up to become
organ and tissue donors. One-third of the 93,000
Americans currently waiting for
life-saving organ
transplants could
die due to a lack of
donors. But effective

Approximately 300,000 Californians had
signed up online in the sixteen months since the
April 2005 launch of the registry website. In the
eighteen weeks since the July 1 DMV partnership, the influx of DMV signups has pushed the
Donate Life California Registry past the 800,000
mark. Thanks to the DMV, approximately 5,000
people per day are signing up with Donate Life
California an exponential increase compared

EZ
Frankie was born on September 19, 1995.
He was my firstborn. Although he was premature at 36 weeks, Frankie was ready for the
world. He was speaking before he was walking. He was potty trained and catching the ball
before he turned two years old. He was growing tall and strong - just too fast for my eyes.
At the age of three Frankie played his first
baseball game, T-ball. He was a natural running around the bases (the opposite way),
fighting for the ball in the outfield - knowing
the fundamentals of baseball but forgetting
them as soon as he stepped onto the field.
Those were very special moments. That, of
course, didn’t last too long. Shortly he became
more experienced and knowledgeable of the
sport and entered a new, more competitive
level. That wowed me and so many.

Donate Life America Launches ’Donor Designation
Collaborative‘ to Propel State Donor Registry Signups
NATIONAL INITIATIVE SEEKS TO INCREASE DONOR DESIGNATIONS TO 100 MILLION BY APRIL 2008
It is not just about the numbers - it is
about who and what the numbers represent: lives hanging in the balance, and
people who bring them hope. With the
number of people waiting for a life-saving
organ transplant quickly approaching
100,000, and the population of the United
States eclipsing the 300 million mark,
Donate Life America, a national not-forprofit organization dedicated to saving
lives by inspiring people to be organ, eye
and tissue donors, has launched a unified
national effort to increase the number of
Americans registered to be donors in their
states to 100 million.

HHS Honors 23 Southland Hospitals for Achieving
Area s Highest Organ Donation Rates in 2004-2006
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) honored
a record 23 area hospitals for excellence in organ donation at
October s National Learning Congress in New Orleans. The HHS
Medal of Honor was awarded to hospitals with at least eight eligible
organ donors that achieved a donation rate of at least 75% for any
consecutive 12-month period between May 2004 and June 2006.
The awards, which are presented in concert with OneLegacy,
reflect the success of the National Organ Donation Breakthrough
Collaborative, an HHS initiative launched in 2003 to save and
enhance thousands of lives annually by spreading best organ donation practices to the nation’s largest hospitals. The national initiative provides hospitals and organ procurement organizations with
the tools and processes needed to dramatically increase organ and
tissue donation rates. In the Los Angeles metropolitan area, organ
donation is up 34% from September 2003, when the Organ
Deceased donation has
increased 18% in the first nine
months of this year
Donation Breakthrough Collaborative first began.
Because of the Organ Donation & Transplantation
Breakthrough Collaborative and efforts to improve organ donation
rates throughout Southern California and across the country, 23
area hospitals achieved Medal of Honor status (see sidebar).
We’re proud of the number of hospitals in our service area that
earned this award, and of how our collaborative effort has such a
meaningful impact on the lives of donor families and recipients
alike, said Tom Mone, CEO of OneLegacy. We will continue to
focus our effort on hospitals, transplant centers and the Donate
Life California Organ & Tissue Donor Registry as we work toward
our ultimate goal of ending the wait for all people awaiting organ
transplants.
Throughout the seven-county area, deceased donation has
increased 18% in the first nine months this year, and OneLegacy is
headed for its seventh consecutive year of all-time highs in organ
donors and organs recovered for life-saving transplant.

Ambassadors of the Year Named
OneLegacy honored five volunteers as
Ambassadors of the Year at the 2006
OneLegacy Ambassadors Fiesta on
September 17 at Griffith Park.
Since the Ambassadors program
launched in February 2003, more than 450
donor family members, transplant recipients and others touched by donation have
attended a one-day training workshop to
prepare them for interacting with the community. The program now offers advanced
workshops to Ambassadors interested in
developing their presentation skills and taking on greater responsibility. There is also a
special Embajadores de OneLegacy program specifically designed for Spanishspeaking volunteers.
4
Ambassadors of the Year were named in
five categories, one for each role
Ambassadors are encouraged to play in our
community: Media Representative (Edith
Gonzalez, at top right with OneLegacy
communications director Bryan Stewart),
Event Staff (Daniel Ronco, at bottom right
with OneLegacy volunteer and community
events coordinator Stephanie Schmitz),
Storyteller (Bob Mummey), Representative
(Marianne O Quinn), and Community
Scout (Phil Arst).
In addition, 20 Applause certificates
were awarded to Ambassadors who made
significant contributions to the community
during the previous year.
OneLegacy > The Bridge > Fall 2006
As we started kindergarten, Frankie demonstrated that he was
very smart and gifted. He was very popular and quickly made
friends with everyone, and I do mean everyone: Belle, Thomas,
Ms. Mohan, the parents, the cafeteria staff, the janitor. He received
many awards and recognitions throughout his school years.
Frankie was a social butterfly , as I was told many times, in my
parent conferences.
On March 6, 2005, he woke up and went to the park to watch
the Sunday league baseball game. We left the park and headed
home. He showered and had lunch and went out to play catch with
his dad. He complained of a headache, and it was unlike him to
complain. I asked him to lie down and he began to say it really
hurts. So I suggested going to the hospital and he said, Yeah let’s
go. That was unlike him too, and I began to worry.
We drove off and as soon as we got onto the freeway he
stopped breathing. I performed CPR and his dad called 911. The
paramedics met us, took over performing CPR and transported
him to the hospital. The doctors at the hospital informed us he had
internal bleeding and needed to be transferred to another hospital.
We arrived at Cedars-Sinai and immediately he was placed in surgery. He survived the surgery, but was in a coma.
Day in and day out, we were there by his side, hoping for a miracle, and praying. There was nothing more to do but pray. On
March 9, we were informed by eight different neurosurgeons that
there was nothing more they could do. Frankie was simply no
longer responding. Several conversations with different doctors,
and all leading to the same conclusion, one that no one ever wants
to hear.
We sat next to Frankie’s bed, hoping for a miracle, even though
we were told he was brain-dead. A representative from OneLegacy
walked in alongside Frankie’s nurse Pam. He asked if we were
interested in giving the gift of life. In the moment I had no other
choice but to wish this was not happening to me, hoping this was
simply a nightmare. The reality was that we were being asked to
make a decision that could change a person’s life for the better. I
didn’t ask anyone but Frankie. I asked him, What would you do?
What should I do? My response was immediate: Yes.
On March 11th, while at the cemetery planning his services, I
was advised that Frankie had saved the lives of five children. With
mixed emotions I was happy for the children and their families.
Of the five children, I have met one of his recipients. Patty
received Frankie’s bowel. She’s an extraordinary little girl who is
Frankie’s age, and coincidently attended the same school as
Frankie. Patty and her family wrote to me shortly after my loss and
her recovery. In Patricia’s (Patty’s mother) letter, she thanked me
for giving Patty a
chance to live a new
and better life. In her
letter, she explained
that after receiving
the transplant, Patty
was able to eat for
the first time in nine
years and was learning the simple things
like how to chew
and swallow.
In that moment,
reading the letter, I
knew the decision

OneLegacy gave me
to help me make the correct decision. Patty and her family have
welcomed my family and me as one of their own. They have been
a great help in our journey.
What I wouldn’t do to have one more month, day, or even a
minute with my baby boy. But knowing that these children have
been able to be hugged, and kissed by their families for even just
one more day has been something that is gratifying.

DMV: 25,000 Per Week Signing Up to Donate Life
Continued from Page 1
to the 3,500 per week prior to the partnership.
We know that the generosity of Californians knows no bounds,
and with 23 million licensed drivers on the road in the state, DMV
employees stand ready to help increase this list of potential life-savers
from thousands to millions, said DMV
Director George Valverde.
Departments of motor vehicles play
a key role in the success of state donor
registries nationwide, said Bryan
Stewart, director of communications
with OneLegacy. Some states, including
Utah, Virginia, Indiana and Colorado,
have signed up more than 60 percent of
their licensed drivers, allowing donation
cases to proceed smoothly and withgreater speed, saving precious time.
Donate Life California is a nonprofit, state-authorized organ and
tissue donor registry, administered by California’s four nonprofit, federally designated organ procurement organizations. As a state-authorized public service, the registry assures that all personal information
is kept confidential and stored in a secure database, accessible only to
authorized organ and tissue recovery personnel.
1
Before the creation of the registry, there was no official list of designated organ and tissue donors. The pink donor dot and signed
donor card voluntarily carried by drivers were meant to serve as an
indication of someone’s intent to donate. But signed cards are often
unavailable at the time a family is approached about the opportunity to
donate, and the dot alone does not grant legal consent for donation.
With the partnership between DMV
and Donate Life California, donor information will be transmitted electronically
directly from DMV to Donate Life
California’s online registry. The driver’s
decision acts as an advanced directive
for organ and tissue donation, and for
drivers 18 and older, it does not require
the consent of any other person. (The
parent or legal guardian must give consent for registrants under 18.) Those who
currently have a pink donor dot on
their licenses but are not near their renewal date are asked to join the
online registry directly. At the time of license renewal, a Yes on the
DMV form results in the pink donor dot being printed directly onto the
licenses. Those who sign up can opt out, alter personal information or
change donation preferences anytime through the online Donate Life
California Registry. For more information or to sign up online, visit
www.donateLIFEcalifornia.org or www.doneVIDAcalifornia.org.

For the Donate Life Run/Walk, 2006 will always
be remembered as the year of the donor family.
Thanks to the efforts of OneLegacy’s Family
Services staff, more than 800 donor family
members were inspired to walk in honor of their
loved ones. The images of donors on hundreds
of T-shirts inspired the record 4,000 participants
in the April event. Adding even more meaning to
the event was the debut of the Circle of Life
Garden, an elegant display of 30 signs with photos of and personal messages to donors and
recipients alike. With support from Sav-on
Drugs, St. Joseph Hospital and a host of other
sponsors, the fourth annual Donate Life
Run/Walk raised approximately $70,000 which
will fund media campaigns to promote enrollment in the Donate Life California Organ &
Tissue Donor Registry. (See article on Page 1.)

DESIGNATION: National Goal 100 Million
Continued from Page 3
totaling approximately 60 million registered organ donors. The
Donor Designation Collaborative seeks to add another 40 million registered donors over the next 18 months, with the potential to honor the generous donation wishes of an additional
400,000 Americans just in the next couple of years.
This national collaborative effort was launched in New
Orleans, La. on October 18, 2006 and featured teams representing 44 states, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia and Ontario,
Canada. These teams — consisting of representatives from organ
and tissue recovery agencies, motor vehicle departments, transplant centers, eye and tissue banks, state health departments,
civic groups and corporate partners — will lead efforts to found
new effective donor registries in states that do not currently
operate a registry; improve the effectiveness of existing donor
registries; and work diligently to promote these registries and
secure millions of additional donor registrations.
As someone who waited 25 months for a double-lung transplant, I see this as the type of groundbreaking work that gives
hope to those waiting, said Trey Schwab, outreach coordinator
for UW Health OPO in Madison, Wis. and vice president of the
Wisconsin Coalition on Donation. The Donor Designation
Collaborative is a powerful way to increase the number of donor
registrations in each state. The real power of this initiative
comes in helping people understand that when they have the
opportunity to sign up on a state donor registry, they have the
power to save the lives of eight people and touch many more
through eye and tissue donation, and in helping states make the
signup process as easy as possible for their residents.
...and Remember
High School Program is
‘Bridging Lives’
OneLegacy’s annual “Fields of Gold” Donor
Remembrance Ceremonies are a March
tradition. This year, 115 organ and tissue
donor families attended ceremonies at
UCLA, Loma Linda University, the Hyatt
Regency Long Beach and the Doubletree
Bakersfield. Musical performances, donor
family and recipient speakers, and a personal video tribute left families feeling
close to their loved ones and appreciated
for their decisions to donate life.
Now that first-time drivers will have the opportunity to make a
donation decision on their DMV drivers license application,
OneLegacy has committeed newfound focus to educating high
school students about organ and tissue donation. Youth education coordinator Simera Nichols has been busy presenting

NATCO Grant Awarded
A beloved member of our OneLegacy family, Craig
Shmorhun, died in his sleep yesterday. Craig was a very
active Per Diem Procurement Transplant Coordinator in our
Redlands office as well as a nurse at Desert Regional
Medical Center, where our staff worked with him in our
shared effort to help donor families. Craig’s caring, presence
and smile will be greatly missed. Craig leaves behind a wife
and three children who we have in our hearts and prayers.
In August, OneLegacy received the
NATCO Grant for Research for 2006
for the study, Increasing Organs
per Donor: Use of the USCOM NonInvasive Cardiac Output Machine
to Guide Donor Management.
Congratulations to primary investigator Stephanie Collazo (above,
with Marilyn Bartucci, NATCO
Research Committee Co-Chair),
clinical education specialist, and
Dr. Mudit Mathur of Loma Linda
University Medical Center, our
project partner.

For the Donate Life Run/Walk, 2006 will always
be remembered as the year of the donor family.
Thanks to the efforts of OneLegacy’s Family
Services staff, more than 800 donor family
members were inspired to walk in honor of their
loved ones. The images of donors on hundreds
of T-shirts inspired the record 4,000 participants
in the April event. Adding even more meaning to
the event was the debut of the Circle of Life
Garden, an elegant display of 30 signs with photos of and personal messages to donors and
recipients alike. With support from Sav-on
Drugs, St. Joseph Hospital and a host of other
sponsors, the fourth annual Donate Life
Run/Walk raised approximately $70,000 which
will fund media campaigns to promote enrollment in the Donate Life California Organ &
Tissue Donor Registry. (See article on Page 1.)
(1) The family of Martha Macias shows their pride
at walking in her honor. (2) Barbara Facio, mother
of organ donor Andrew Ortiz, releases a bird as the
recipient of Andrew’s heart, Fred Phillips (left),
looks on. (3) The Circle of Life Garden, with approximately 30 memorial signs at the finish line, was a
new feature this year. (4) “Team Ted” made another
strong showing in support of lung recipient Ted
Askier. (5) Victor Constantino spoke eloqoently of
his father Hugo, who died awaiting a lung transplant and whose memory inspired more than 2,300
friends and Sav-on Drugs colleagues to register
with Donate Life California. (6) Donate Life

coordinator Sabrina Ho (kneeling in black jacket)

Ambassadors of the Year Named
OneLegacy honored five volunteers as
Ambassadors of the Year at the 2006
OneLegacy Ambassadors Fiesta on
September 17 at Griffith Park.
Since the Ambassadors program
launched in February 2003, more than 450
donor family members, transplant recipients and others touched by donation have
attended a one-day training workshop to
prepare them for interacting with the community. The program now offers advanced
workshops to Ambassadors interested in
developing their presentation skills and taking on greater responsibility. There is also a
special Embajadores de OneLegacy program specifically designed for Spanishspeaking volunteers.
4
Ambassadors of the Year were named in
five categories, one for each role
Ambassadors are encouraged to play in our
community: Media Representative (Edith
Gonzalez, at top right with OneLegacy
communications director Bryan Stewart),
Event Staff (Daniel Ronco, at bottom right
with OneLegacy volunteer and community
events coordinator Stephanie Schmitz),
Storyteller (Bob Mummey), Representative
(Marianne O Quinn), and Community
Scout (Phil Arst).
In addition, 20 Applause certificates
were awarded to Ambassadors who made
significant contributions to the community
during the previous year.
OneLegacy > The Bridge > Fall 2006
As we started kindergarten, Frankie demonstrated that he was
very smart and gifted. He was very popular and quickly made
friends with everyone, and I do mean everyone: Belle, Thomas,
Ms. Mohan, the parents, the cafeteria staff, the janitor. He received
many awards and recognitions throughout his school years.
Frankie was a social butterfly , as I was told many times, in my
parent conferences.
On March 6, 2005, he woke up and went to the park to watch
the Sunday league baseball game. We left the park and headed
home. He showered and had lunch and went out to play catch with
his dad. He complained of a headache, and it was unlike him to
complain. I asked him to lie down and he began to say it really
hurts. So I suggested going to the hospital and he said, Yeah let’s
go. That was unlike him too, and I began to worry.
We drove off and as soon as we got onto the freeway he
stopped breathing. I performed CPR and his dad called 911. The
paramedics met us, took over performing CPR and transported
him to the hospital. The doctors at the hospital informed us he had
internal bleeding and needed to be transferred to another hospital.
We arrived at Cedars-Sinai and immediately he was placed in surgery. He survived the surgery, but was in a coma.
Day in and day out, we were there by his side, hoping for a miracle, and praying. There was nothing more to do but pray. On
March 9, we were informed by eight different neurosurgeons that
there was nothing more they could do. Frankie was simply no
longer responding. Several conversations with different doctors,
and all leading to the same conclusion, one that no one ever wants
to hear.
We sat next to Frankie’s bed, hoping for a miracle, even though
we were told he was brain-dead. A representative from OneLegacy
walked in alongside Frankie’s nurse Pam. He asked if we were
interested in giving the gift of life. In the moment I had no other
choice but to wish this was not happening to me, hoping this was
simply a nightmare. The reality was that we were being asked to
make a decision that could change a person’s life for the better. I
didn’t ask anyone but Frankie. I asked him, What would you do?
What should I do? My response was immediate: Yes.
On March 11th, while at the cemetery planning his services, I
was advised that Frankie had saved the lives of five children. With
mixed emotions I was happy for the children and their families.
Of the five children, I have met one of his recipients. Patty
received Frankie’s bowel. She’s an extraordinary little girl who is
Frankie’s age, and coincidently attended the same school as
Frankie. Patty and her family wrote to me shortly after my loss and
her recovery. In Patricia’s (Patty’s mother) letter, she thanked me
for giving Patty a
chance to live a new
and better life. In her
letter, she explained
that after receiving
the transplant, Patty
was able to eat for
the first time in nine
years and was learning the simple things
like how to chew
and swallow.
In that moment,
reading the letter, I
knew the decision

OneLegacy gave me
to help me make the correct decision. Patty and her family have
welcomed my family and me as one of their own. They have been
a great help in our journey.
What I wouldn’t do to have one more month, day, or even a
minute with my baby boy. But knowing that these children have
been able to be hugged, and kissed by their families for even just
one more day has been something that is gratifying.

Musicians Alex Band (left) and Josh Kelley higlighted
August’s “Donate Life Rocks” event at Hard Rock Cafe Los

with his rendition “Wherever You Will Go”, which was selected as the official song fo the 2007 Donate Life Rose Parade
Float, Giving From The Heart.

Donate Life America Launches ’Donor Designation
Collaborative‘ to Propel State Donor Registry Signups
NATIONAL INITIATIVE SEEKS TO INCREASE DONOR DESIGNATIONS TO 100 MILLION BY APRIL 2008
It is not just about the numbers - it is
about who and what the numbers represent: lives hanging in the balance, and
people who bring them hope. With the
number of people waiting for a life-saving
organ transplant quickly approaching
100,000, and the population of the United
States eclipsing the 300 million mark,
Donate Life America, a national not-forprofit organization dedicated to saving
lives by inspiring people to be organ, eye
and tissue donors, has launched a unified
national effort to increase the number of
Americans registered to be donors in their
states to 100 million.

Fall 2006
Please see DMV, Page 12
Approximately 300,000 Californians had
signed up online in the sixteen months since the
April 2005 launch of the registry website. In the
eighteen weeks since the July 1 DMV partnership, the influx of DMV signups has pushed the
Donate Life California Registry past the 800,000
mark. Thanks to the DMV, approximately 5,000
people per day are signing up with Donate Life
California an exponential increase compared
With 20,000 people in need of life-saving
transplants in California alone, DMV and Donate
Life California have teamed up with a new challenge for the state’s drivers: sign up to become
organ and tissue donors. One-third of the 93,000
Americans currently waiting for
life-saving organ
transplants could
die due to a lack of
donors. But effective

Californians can
help change that.

Please see FRANKIE, Page 13
At the age of three Frankie played his first
baseball game, T-ball. He was a natural running around the bases (the opposite way),
fighting for the ball in the outfield - knowing
the fundamentals of baseball but forgetting
them as soon as he stepped onto the field.
Those were very special moments. That, of
course, didn’t last too long. Shortly he became
more experienced and knowledgeable of the
sport and entered a new, more competitive
level. That wowed me and so many.
