Leer from the Execu7ve Director
Happy New Year! With the new year
oLen comes CHANGE (don’t worry, I’m
not geJng into polical changes here!).
First of all, we are changing our Board of
Directors Chair! I’m thrilled to welcome
Steve Polly of BaNle and Polly as our
Chair for 2017! The members of Steve’s
law firm have been very acve with the
Chamber since they joined in 2012. Steve is on the Board and
Taste of River/Buy River commiNee, Jim Ellis is on the membership commiNee, Steve Yoo is on the golf commiNee and
Eileen Gorski chairs the Expo commiNee and is on the Christmas party commiNee. I’m very grateful for their support and
commitment to our Chamber!
Thanks to Marc Hustek, who has done a remarkable job as
Chair for the last two years! Don’t worry, he’s not going anywhere, he has two years leL of his term on the Board and he
will serve as Past Chair. He will connue to chair the golf
commiNee, leading us to another exceponal oung on June
19. He will also connue to be our liaison to all of the restaurants/bars that are in the Chamber...he generously gives so
much of his me supporng them!
Faces change around here too. We had 76 new members join
in 2016, so you’ll see lots of new faces! But unfortunately we
also see people go, when they leave their job, relocate, rere
or close the business. It makes me sad when we develop very
posive relaonships with people who work at our member
businesses and they leave. Especially when hard-working,
commiNed volunteers leave, so we’re always seeking new
people to step forward and help with Chamber acvies!
Maybe as I get older, change is harder to take, but it seems
like things are changing more rapidly in the last decade.
Technology is changing SO fast, we seem to need new computers and phones every couple of years now. Soon we’ll be
living like the Jetsons! Not only are albums and CDs a thing of
the past, soon DVDs and Blu-Rays will be obsolete and we’ll
obtain all video/audio online. Our aNachment to our cell
phones has made life easier in so many ways, but the addicon to phones is frightening! It’s not just teens who are texng and driving. If you use your phone in your car, I’m begging you to make this change in 2017, for the safety of all:
please put your phone away when you’re in your car!
Facebook and social media have changed our world drascally; our lives are now an open book and lines of communicaon are wide open. Media in general has changed significantly too, being the first to report news has become more important that being accurate or imparal. I sll rely on tradional media, as I read the actual newspaper and listen to the
radio. And I sll believe that the best business relaonships
are formed in person rather than electronically.
I hope to see you oLen in 2017, let’s make it a great year!
Liz Manning, Execuve Director

Hello, my name is Carrie
Hoover and I am an agent with Lyndall Insurance. Although I have lived in Northeast Ohio my enre life, I was
not introduced to Rocky River Chamber unl two years
ago, when I bonded with Sharon Spooner siJng in a golf
cart, for 6 hours, in 90-degree weather. We, like many
business people do, were volunteering at a golf oung for
a group we were both involved in. We were doing what
good members do; we helped in whatever capacity we
were able. Sharon and I discussed many things that day,
but she also welcomed me to my first meeng with the
Chamber. I am sll not sure how we made it through that
heat, but I am sure that the conversaon we had that day
led to one of my best decisions in my career and that was
joining the Rocky River Chamber of Commerce.
As a mother of seven (no I did not have them all) my husband, Dennis, and I are always working to balance our careers and family life. My focus for insurance is with small
-business owners, commercial policies and anyone who
just needs someone to explain everything to them. I have
found that relaonship building and connecng to my
community have helped me build a network of people
that far exceeds the insurance industry alone. In the year
I have been with the Rocky River Chamber I have joined
the membership commiNee, which has introduced me to
many more people than I would have by just aNending
monthly meengs. Through the Chamber I have built
business connecons, friendly acquaintances and friendships I will cherish for many years to come.
Although I have zero intenons of repeang that day in a
golf cart, I do look forward to growing my connecons in
Rocky River and becoming even more involved. I enjoy
the monthly luncheons, the membership commiNee
meengs and all the special events the Chamber holds
every year. I am always open to meeng any member of
the Chamber and would love to see how we can work together.

www.BadGirlFitness.net
Hi! I’m Diane Risdon and helping women live healthier lives is my passion! In 2014, I
launched Bad Girl Fitness in Westlake, a training center
just for women. With 30 years of experience in the fitness
industry, I wanted to create a training studio that focused
on the unique needs of women in the area of wellness.
Not because they need different exercises or can’t do the
workouts that men do, but to allow them to appreciate
their uniqueness and strength, both inside and out. The
result is Bad Girl Fitness!
I opened and operated a very tradional fitness center in
Amherst for nine years before I was inspired to create a
new workout program and studio just for women and
moved to Westlake. I am excited to be moving on in the
next step of this journey as we are now expanding our
brand through franchising.
My husband, while not actually involved in the business,
has been my rock and supported me even when I decided
to leave a 16 year career as a Special Educaon teacher to
open my first gym. We live in Lorain with our three sons.
I was invited to aNend a Rocky River Chamber luncheon
soon aLer I opened and was so impressed with how welcoming and friendly everyone was that I decided to join
immediately. It was a great decision as I have met some
wonderful people and made great connecons. I think Liz
does a great job of organizing great events, having really
interesng speakers at luncheons, and making sure that
“newbies” feel totally comfortable when they first join. If
we haven’t met yet, I look forward to doing so!

“The opportunity for networking that the Expo provides is very different from most
events that we attend. It gives us a chance to discuss the real estate market in a low
key informational way with people who may be interested now or later. I like meeting
other business people who we can refer our buyers and sellers to. It is also an
exciting and very social event.”
~ Gloria Hardington, The SALEmaker Team/Howard Hanna Real Estate Services

“We enjoy participating in the Business Expo because it is a great place to network with business owners and residents of the Rocky
River area. We’ve been a sponsor of this great event for seven years. The early Gold Sponsorship was a great business decision
because of the exposure all through the year. Expo brings awareness to the community that we are a family owned and operated
business serving Northeast Ohio for more than 30 years.”
