Congratulations to all the students, parents, and staff for another great year in the Ishpeming Schools! Veggie University ~ Birchview Elementary The ground was still frozen and covered with snow and ice, but the fourth grade students at the Birchview Elementary School were getting a taste of early spring planting with the Veggie University Program. The Veggie University Program has introduced the students to the study of soil types, seed, and plant anatomy, planting, growing, and nutrition. This non-profit program is from the Culinary Vegetable Institute in Milian, Ohio. The goal of the program is to change the eating habits of children by teaching them about agriculture and healthy food choices. Fourth grade student, Tyler Willey said, “We are learning about seeds, how to plant them, and eating healthy.” They started our investigation by test tasting a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Isis Vollmar said, “When the plants have grown enough, we will get to harvest them and have a feast celebration.” A variety of vegetables such as red and green lettuce, celery, radishes, peas, mung beans, squash, pumpkins, and even corn were planted. Andrew Prosser said, “I enjoy seeing how fast the plants are growing each day.” We are learning that it is better to eat fresh than opening a can. This program was new to the Birchview School this year. It was provided to our school through a grant from U. P. Health Systems Bell. The curriculum is designed to meet the federal standards for the No Child Left Behind Initiative. HEMATITE HIGHLIGHTS ISHPEMING SCHOOL DISTRICT PAGE 8 Hematites Perform Rodgers & Hammerstein’s ~ South Pacific In February of 2015 Denise Clark and Mrs. Grazulis held auditions for the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, South Pacific. After a weekend of mulling over the cast and many discussions the cast list was posted on a Monday morning. Of the 5 leading roles, only one (Alec VanHorn as Luther Billis) had performed in a major role at Peterson Auditorium and two (Joe Nault as Emile DeBeque and Griffin Pepin as Joe Cable) had never been in a musical anywhere. Lindsay Corkin (Nellie Forbush) had been in the chorus of Guys and Dolls and Rachael Loman (Bloody Mary), who had the most stage experience, was cast in her very first major role. Johnathan “Pookie” Willey (Brackett), Cody Johnson (Professor) and Thomas Bleau (Stewpot) returned to the stage in minor roles with major impact. Other sailors included Seb DeWitt, Ben Johns and Kobe Nason. This small group of young men, along with Luther Billis, filled the stage with wonderful singing and acting in their two group numbers, Bloody Mary and There is Nothin’ Like a Dame! Alice Yu, an exchange student from China with no experience, played the part of Liat. Brianna Aho (Dinah) was also a first time performer (what a shame!) and Kelsey Routhier led the nurses. Other performers were Nicole Johnson, Mariel Morton, Desiree Neveau, Delaney Steppke, Sadie Stetson and Kiya Williams (all first time performers!). Jordan Christian and Desiree Hughes filled out the cast. Other, out-of-sight, people who made incredible contributions were Jordan Musser and Josh Penrose (lighting and sound), Tommy Potter (Poster and palm tree design) and Betty Mongiat (stage props). This show was the best musical Ishpeming High School has put on. Rachael and Alec became their characters and the audience laughed raucously many times! Lindsay Corkin shocked the crowd with her projection and beautiful voice. Joe Nault has just been discovered and hopefully will pursue further opportunities in college. Griffin Pepin will definitely appear in future IHS productions. If you missed the chance to see it in May and would like to watch it, please feel free to contact Mrs. Sheila Grazulis, to arrange a viewing of the DVD at [email protected]. HEMATITE HIGHLIGHTS ISHPEMING SCHOOL DISTRICT PAGE 9 Hematites In Harmony Take A Bite Out Of The Big Apple On Thursday April 9, 2015 at 5:00 a.m. forty three high school students, nine chaperones and Mrs. Grazulis boarded a Checker Bus (driven by James) to begin their long-awaited trip to New York City! Thursday’s destination was Sandusky, Ohio and the Kalahari Resort. The students enjoyed some water park fun, arcade games, a short rehearsal and a good night’s sleep. Early on Friday, they boarded the bus to complete their long trek to the Big Apple. Upon arriving in the city at 5:30 p.m., they exited the bus at Ellen’s Stardust Diner, met their tour guide, Mike, and never looked back. Their whirlwind 4 days of sightseeing had begun! The Diner featured singing waiters and waitresses. Broadway hopefuls. Incredible performers. After a visit to Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, students had some time to wander in Times Square. Saturday morning started quite early with a visit to the Today Show! Some of the students were spotted on TV6! That was followed by a tour of the New Amsterdam Theater, where they learned the history of the building, the incredible renovation and were able to see and try on costumes from actual Broadway productions. Later that morning they toured Radio City Music Hall, enjoyed lunch on our own and headed to the Broadway Choral Workshop. IHS Hematites in Harmony learned to sing the opening number, Magic to Do from the musical Pippin from a Broadway musical director. The next 45 minutes were spent learning choreography from a Broadway performer. After this incredible experience, they headed to St. Paul’s Church to participate in mass and perform their concert literature in a beautiful building with incredible acoustics. The day ended at Medieval Times, where they witnessed an incredible horse show and cheered on Yellow Knight in a 1300 seat stadium. Their dinner was eaten without utensils. Sunday April 12 they met their ‘step-on’ tour guide, Gideon. He brought the group to Central Park, where they sang the National Anthem with street performer, Rakiem Walker, at the Bethesda Fountain. They also rode the Subway and spent time at Grand Central Station. That afternoon they saw the Tony Award winning musical, Aladdin. After a couple of hours of free time in Times Square, Sunday ended with a visit to the Top of the Rock; the best view of the city. Monday’s incredibly long day began at Ellis Island and included the Statue of Liberty, Wallstreet, the 9/11 Museum (heart wrenching), Little Italy and Chinatown. They walked for 12 hours that day. “James” met them in Little Italy at 8:00 p.m. and they arrived home on Tuesday April 14 around 4:00 p.m.. It was the trip of a lifetime. One student summed up the trip, “I loved every thing. We pretty much got the whole experience in 4 days. It was really fun.” HEMATITE HIGHLIGHTS ISHPEMING SCHOOL PAGE DISTRICT 10 2015-2016 School Calendar September 2, Wednesday 3, Thursday 7, Monday 8, Tuesday Professional Development Professional Development Labor day Professional Development Classes begin (1/2 day students) October 9, Friday Professional Development November 25, Wednesday 26, Thursday 27, Friday Thanksgiving Recess Thanksgiving Recess Thanksgiving Recess December 22, Tuesday Last day of school before winter break January 2016 4, Monday 22, Friday Classes resume Records day (1/2 Day make up) February 12, Friday Professional Development March 23, Wednesday Last day of school before spring break April 4, Monday 29, Friday Classes resume Break Day – Make up day May 30, Monday Memorial Day June 8, Wednesday Final student day (1/2 Day students) Professional Development (1/2 Day) 9, Thursday Records Day (1/2 Day Make Up) Commencement Scheduled Friday, June 3, 2016 7:00 p.m. W. The dedication and drive is impressive, and the results have culminated in scholarships, pride and unexpected doors opening for our students. Half a million dollars was earned by our graduating senior class this year; a reward much needed in these hard and difficult times. And now that these 58 seniors have graduated, we have 58 new alumni of Ishpeming Public Schools. I hope that your education at Ishpeming serves you well as you move into your new phase of life. As the school year has come to a close, we have a natural inclination to look back and reminisce about the school year. We remember all of the accomplishments, fun times, lasting memories, staff and student achievements and even the setbacks. I believe that it is important to look to the future, as well. Ishpeming Public Schools has made several gains toward the ultimate goal of creating a learning environment where all students learn at high levels. Staff has worked on, and continues to work on, the School Improvement Plans (SIP) they have created, creating a positive learning environment, and staff has spent countless hours in the pursuit of educating ALL students. We also continue to work on the culture and climate of our district through P.O.W.E.R. program, Peer-to-Peer, Safe and Civil School training, Response to Intervention program and a Positive Behavioral Intervention System (PBIS). All of these efforts are designed to improve the academic and social environment of our community and school system. I encourage you to ask questions and get involved in this process. The families and community of Ishpeming are integral parts to creating a great school district. Only together will we create a better and brighter future. Also, a heartfelt welcome needs to be extended to our incoming Kindergarten Class of 2028 parents and students – Welcome to the Ishpeming Public School family! I look forward to meeting you and working with you and your son or daughter. Please join Ishpeming Public Schools and get involved in any way that you can.
