DANISH LUTHERAN CHURCH
210 – 10th Avenue N.E.
Calgary, T2E 0W9
March 2017 to May 2017
Pastor´s corner
On the occasion of the inauguration of the 45th
president of The United States, Donald Trump
(also called the most powerful man of the
world), I came to reflect on this little word,
“power”.
What is or what does “power” mean? At a
lexical level, “power” means: the capability to
accomplish ones goal against the will of others
and in defiance of the interests of others; the
possession of control or command over others.
But the idea of “power” is not clear.
When we end the Lord’s Prayer by saying “For
thine is the kingdom, the power ... ..” then it
may well be that we initially think of “power”, as
described above. An example of this meaning
we find in the book of Job in the Old Testament
where God show His power to Job. The only
purpose is to get Job to understand that before
God he is both foolish and powerless.
But as we turn to the New Testament, we find
a completely different understanding of “power”
than the one that The Old Testament often
shows us.
In the New Testament the power of God is
shown in the way He gives up his almighty
“power”.
The very fact that God gives up using His
almighty “power” has always made people
sneer at and make fun of Christianity. Truly, it
is strange that He just submits himself to
maltreatment,
mockery and
crucifixion instead of
demonstrating his
power by climbing
down from the
cross completely
unharmed. Now
that it is within the
power of the almighty God to do so, if He
wants to. That is also what people were
begging him to do: Come down from that
cross. Then we will believe in you! In exactly
the same way that we today might take into our
heads to say: intervene in the muddle of the
world! Abolish war, diseases, violence, stress,
impaired drivers, exclusive focus on economic
factors, and all the devil’s thoughtlessness and
meaninglessness. Then we will believe in you!
But God will no longer use his almighty “power”
to bully us into submission to Him by or
coercing us with demonstrations of power!
Why not? Wouldn’t it be very nice, easy to
understand, and make the world more simple or what? Well, by letting his son, Jesus Christ,
be born on earth God wanted firstly to show us
that He loves us as we are, for better or for
worse, and secondly He also wanted to show
us that love can’t be forced through the use of
“power”. The latter is indeed a painful situation
which we humans also experience from time to
time. However dearly we love another human
being, we can neither buy nor force the other
person to love us back. Or as Paul writes in his
praises of Love in his first letter to the
Corinthians: ”Love is patient and kind.” In other
words it is not possible for love to get its way
through raw power.
Therefore, the novelty of the New Testament is
that now we only know God’s “power” as the
power of
Love.On the other hand, when we meet love in
our own lives, then we have no doubts
whatsoever that Love itself is a “power” too,
although it is not experienced as a power in the
traditional way of thinking of “power”. On the
contrary, where love makes its entry, there
hatred, suspicion, violence, wars and other self
-sufficiency must give way. So “power” and
“power” is not unequivocal words.
Our human “power”, is quite tangible, we can
see and feel it well. But, God’s “power” we can
only
believe in! In other words, we can only believe
in and hope that love will eventually prevail,
even though it is a completely invisible power
that hasn’t got the option of resorting to
tangible power!
The crown of God’s “power” is the resurrection;
firstl the resurrection of Jesus on the first
Easter morning and since then our own
resurrection!
Easter is about “power”, God’s “power”, the
“power” of love. That turned out to be so
powerful that even a tomb couldn’t keep the
dead One down.
He came alive again!
So remember!
God’s Easter tiding speaks a word
Of what never happens in this world;
And this word appears so weak and bare
Vulnerable to the world’s hostile glare.
(Translated from Danish by Karen FalkenbergAndersen and C. Berg)

Guest Speakers
Our Guest Speaker on March 28. at 7.30 pm
in the lower hall of our church, is John
Christensen.
John Christensen was
born into a hard-working
Saskatchewan farm
family in 1941. As a
prairie farm boy of Métis
lineage, John’s life
centred on hunting,
fishing, trapping, and
roaming the countryside
in which he lived.Then,
without warning, a
crippling and brutal illness changed his life
forever. After months of hospitalization and
therapy, John returned to the farm with
permanent paralysis of his left leg. Later and
after several misfortunes in life Christensen
established the Global Disability Foundation.
Meet the man behind the book “The 13th rope”
and hear how he managed to turn misfortunes
and disasters into endurance, optimism and
courage.
Does life have a meaning?
Have you found it?
On April 25 at 7.30 pm our last guest speaker

Falkenberg-Andersen.
He was born in in
Denmark and grew up
in Copenhagen, where
he finished his

Afterwards went to the
institute of Technology
to become a civil
engineer. He emigrated
to Canada in 1952,
where he worked as an carpenter until 1959,
when he went back to Denmark to finish his
Engineering degree. He then worked as an
engineer the West-Zealand road department
until 1975. The same year he emigrated back
to Canada, where he bought a farm near
Dickson, Alberta. In 1997 he left the farm to live
in Calgary as a pensioner.
Per will share with us his spiritual experiences,
which he has had from a very early age and
continue up until now.

Mission Moments:
On the afternoon of Saturday November 19,
ten children gathered in the Sunday School
room to pack shoeboxes for Operation
Christmas Child. This is a project the children
of our Church have been doing for close to 20
years and it is
something that they
enjoy doing
immensely.
This year we
packed 50 boxes in
about 2 hours.
A number of adult
volunteers helped
out.
After the last shoebox was filled we
enjoyed a delicious
supper in the
Church basement
prepared by Margaret Propp. Then we watched
the movie, "The Secret Garden", which Ron
Propp had set up for us. Thank you to the
parents and grandparents who helped out with
packing shoeboxes, cleaning up after supper,
supervising children, and vacuuming up
popcorn at the end of the evening. A special
thanks to Tillie Olson who baked cookies to go
with our dessert! A wonderful evening was had
by all.
Later in the week a total of 58 shoeboxes were
delivered to Samaritan's Purse headquarters in
NE Calgary. Our load was made up of the 50
shoeboxes packed by the children, others
packed by adults from our congregation, and 3
dropped off by someone in the community.
This year we had been asked to include
toques, mittens, and warm socks in the
shoeboxes so that they could be sent to the
Ukraine where winters are cold. Over 11.2
million shoeboxes were
collected and delivered by Samaritan's Purse
International to many countries around the
world in 2016. Of those, 660,000 were
collected and delivered by
Samaritan's Purse Canada. Thank you to everyone who bought vegetables at our fall auction, or knit toques and mittens, and gave
money and/or other items for the shoesboxes.
Your contributions have touched the lives of
many children!
