COLLEGE OF SCIENCES CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Chemistry prepares students for
successful careers in private and government
sectors or to pursue graduate studies in chemistry.
The program provides quality theoretical and
practical learning experiences in the various areas
of chemistry enriched with diverse research
opportunities.

VISION STATEMENT
The chemistry department at
KFUPM aspires to excel in
chemical education, research
and services.
COLLEGE OF SCIENCES
CHEMISTRY
DEPARTMENT
MISSION STATEMENT
The chemistry department is committed to prepare
competitive and professional graduates within an
innovative and intellectually stimulating environment,
support other academic programs at KFUPM by
offering quality chemistry learning experiences,
conduct basic and applied research of national and
international impact, build proactive partnerships with
industry and offer effective training and educational
and technical services to the society.
The curricula of the B.S. degree in Chemistry and
Industrial Chemistry are designed to provide the
necessary professional background for those who are
pursuing careers in academic, governmental and
industrial establishments. The courses offered are
those recommended by international chemical
organizations and provide fundamental knowledge in
the major areas of Chemistry. Research courses in both
programs encourage independent study and research,
which enables the student to learn to apply different
techniques and principles in order to find solutions to
scientific problems under the direction of a member of
the faculty. The duration of this activity is one
semester for an industrial chemist and two semesters
for a chemist. Summer training is required from both
Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry students. For
industrial chemists, the training must take place in
industry.

ABOUT CHEMISTRY AND THE CHEMISTRY
MAJORS
Chemistry is the study of matter and its changes:
what substances are made of, their properties, how
they act, and how they interact. Chemistry is
typically divided into analytical, environmental,
inorganic, materials, organic, and physical. The
Department of Chemistry offers a B.S. degree in
Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry. Chemists and
Industrial Chemists contribute to the academic and
industrial development of the Kingdom by working
in the civil service, educational institutions, in
government and private institutions responsible for
public health and environmental safety, or in one of
the many industries whose products or processes
involve chemical technology.
