CourseDescription:Astudyofthepredecessorstoandevolutionofrockmusicfromtheearly50’sthroughthe
developmentstothepresent.Thecourseisdesignedfornon-musicmajors.
Someofthematerialspresentedinthisclass,inadditiontobeinghistorical,areverygraphicanddirect,using
languagethatsomemayobjectto,andreferringtopracticesthatarenotjustoutsideofthemainstream,but
alsoinmanycases,illegal.Theyarepartoftheculturewewillbestudying,andwewouldbedoingthecourse
adisservicebyignoringthem.

• Learningfundamentalprinciples,generalizations,ortheories
• Gainingabroaderunderstandingandappreciationofintellectual/culturalactivity(music,science,

professorwiththeirevaluationsoftheirfellowgroupmembers.Studentswhodonotreturnthisformtothe
professorwithinaweekwillreceivednopointsforthissectionoftheassignment.
Finalexam:
ThefinalexamwillbegivenonWednesday,May10th,2017from10:30AM-12:30PM,andiscomprehensive
innature.Onceyouhavecompletedthefinalexam,youarefreetoleave.
Cell-PhonePolicy:
Theuseofcellularphones(includingfortexting)duringclass,willnotbetoleratedwithoutpriorpermission
fromtheprofessor,andthiswillonlybegrantedinemergencies.Cellphoneswillbeturnedtothe“off”or
“silent”positionforthedurationofclass.Ifyourphonerings,youwillbeaskedtoleaveclassfortheremainder
oftheday,andyouwillbemarkedasabsentfortheentirelecture.
Ontestdays,ifIseethatyourcellphoneisout,youwillreceiveafailinggrade(0%)forthattest.Youwillalso

StudentResponsibilities:
Thestudentshouldplanongettingstartedbyreadingeachday’sassignment,andrepeatedlylisteningtothe
correspondingmusicalexamples.Youhavebeenprovidedwithonlinelinkstothesetunesattheendofthis
syllabus.Thelisteningexampleswilltaketimeandconcentratedattentioninorderforthestudenttogainthe
neededknowledgeofwhatishappeningwithineachtune.Thelisteningportionsofeachofthetestswill
involveplaybackofshortexcerpts,nottheentiretunes.Examcontentwillbecoveredinlargepartbythe
groupworkwewillbedoing.Note-takingduringgroupandclassdiscussionsissuggested.Thoseofyouwho
areactiveparticipantsintheclassworkwillbemorelikelytorememberthematerial.
Attendance:AccordingtotheASUcatalog:“Studentsareexpectedtobepresentforallclassmeetingsofthe
coursesforwhichtheyareregistered.Anaccuraterecordofattendanceforeachstudentmustbe
maintainedbytheinstructor.”
