AP Style test: Rewrite the following passage using your notes and correct AP Style rules. You do
not need to make correction marks, and there is no need to majorly change the order or
add/delete words (maybe one or two) – this is about little errors (and lots of them)! There are 50
spots where errors possibly exist, but approximately 35-40 actual errors (depending on how you
count). Hint: the headline is correct.
Parrish wins heated election
In a bitter, expensive contest, doctor Victoria Parrish defeated Senator Denise Zayas in
the race for Fla. governor. Parrish won the Tues. election after spending a record $39,100,000
dollars in campaign ads, an average of 7 dollars per voter. Parrish, a neurosurgeon from Mims
FL, used negative ads to target Zayas’s failed projects in the US Senate.
A key for Parrish was the support of the Military, including a stirring speech by General
Jonathan Mauck, who held a rally on the W. side of Orlando, Fla.’s closed navy base on Reese
Avenue. The rally lasted 4 hours and included members of the F.B.I., Central Intelligence
Agency (CIA) and Moms For Florida’s Military (MFFM).
Not everyone supported Parrish, though, and local leaders like Reverend Julianna
Weidler and rabbi Malcolm Robinson, heads of the two biggest congregations in central Florida,
were almost enough to affect the final decision.
However, nothing could stop the surge from the Oct. 30th debate, where Parrish climbed
to a 9 percent lead after exposing connections Zayas had to a commune in Fresno, California in
the 1990’s.
ABC News first announced the win at 10:00 p.m., and the party lasted well past 12 a.m.
at Parrish’s headquarters at 200 East Colonial Drive, with supporters dancing to the campaign
theme song, I’m Walking On Sunshine.
Parrish came to politics after saving the life of future husband Nick Muise, a QB for the
Miami Dolphins, in Dec. 2010. Muise, who suffered a brain injury after leading his team too a
24-8 win in the Superbowl, fully recovered and became a vocal opponent of current health care
practices.
