Review Sheet Math 101 Test #1 Instructions: Bring to the test a pencil and an eraser. Do not bring any notes or formula sheets. You will not be allowed to look at anyone else’s paper. There will be 10 questions worth 20 points each. The problems will be similar to the following: 1) Explain the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning. 2) Explain what “valid” means and describe its relationship with the idea of “truth”. 3) Explain what a disjunction is and make up a simple example. 4) Explain what a conditional is and make up a simple example. 5) Construct a truth table for the symbolic expression ~ p q r 6) Use DeMorgan’s laws to write the sentence that is the negation of the sentence: “I am not a penguin and I am not a Californian.” 7) Assign letters to each basic statement in this sentence, and translate into logic symbols: “If I take the train or take the bus, then I will be bored and I will be late.” Be sure to place parentheses properly. 8) Determine the most obvious valid conclusion that goes with these two premises: a) If I lose my books, then I can’t do my homework b) I did my homework 9) Use a truth table to determine if this argument is valid: a) You will be convicted only if you are guilty. b) If they have evidence then you will be convicted. Therefore, either they don’t have evidence or you are guilty. 10) Use a truth table to determine if these two statements are equivalent: a) “If you do not do homework and do not do well on tests, then you will fail.” b) “You did homework or you did well on tests or you failed.”
