February 2017 is here, and I just know it will be a fabulous month for us all as we start moving through the 2017 new year and looking forward to the warmer months of spring just a few months away. Thursday, February 2nd, is Groundhog Day. Groundhog Day is a traditional holiday celebrated on February 2. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then the spring season will arrive early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its den, and winter weather will persist for six more weeks. Tuesday, February 14th, is Valentine’s Day. The original “St. Valentine” was just a liturgical celebration of one of the Christian saints named Valentinus. By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards Monday, February 20th, is Presidents Day. Presidents Day in the United States is celebrated on the third Monday of February. It was originally designed to Belmont admin team: Peggy, Gilda, Jessica, Keith, Nancy, Jon, Allyson, & Kimia celebrate the birthday of George Washington, the first president of the country, but is now viewed as a day to celebrate all United States Presidents. February is the shortest month of the year, and as a result of the shorter number of days, February has some unique attributes. In common years, February can pass without a single full moon. The next time this will happen will be in 2018. Once every six years, February is the only month that has four, full seven-day weeks. February starts on the same day of the week as March and November in common years, and on the same day of the week as August on leap years. February also ends on the same day of the week as October every year. In leap years, it is the only month that begins and ends on the same weekday. As always, thank you for your continued support of Belmont Village San Jose and our staff, as we truly appreciate the opportunity to serve you and your loved one. Sincerely, Keith Payne Let’s Celebrate all of the February Birthdays on Thursday, Feb. 23rd, at 11:30 AM Resident Birthdays Feb 1 Feb 2 Feb 4 Feb 5 Feb 9 Feb 9 Feb 21 Roy Takaki Lorraine Giovacchini Michael Mauldin Lois Robinette Virginia Bradley Larry Tindall Lester Shoff Support Group Super Bowl Party If you have a loved one in our Memory Programs, you are invited to attend a Support Group. We will discuss the behaviors of affection and sexuality. Affection and sexuality can be seen as feelings and emotions that may surface from within a resident and can be expressed inappropriately in sexual behaviors. A resident may also have feelings and be drawn to another resident or staff and express their feelings inappropriately. Staff members are expected to be proactive and involve the rest of the team to develop strategies. Some affection, such as holding hands and hugging, is normal, but the other residents must be protected from unwanted sexual contact or abuse. Family members, such as husband and wife relationships, may also go through changes with the loss of sexual intimacy or desire. This noticeable change my be caused by medication, hormonal imbalance, agitation or the inability to recognize their partner. It is expected that staff members are to remain calm, reassure, redirect and be proactive if a pattern is observed to prevent an escalation from anxiety to agitation. Special Presentation by Greg! Greg Lighthouse will share his knowledge about submarines and how they work! Greg Lighthouse vividly remembers his time spent in the Navy Reserve, Submarine Division and serving in the Merchant Marines. It was his first time at sea on a submarine and he enjoyed every moment. He wants to share his experiences during his time at sea and teach us a thing or two about submarines. Let’s join this Bay Area local for a great presentation on Friday, February 10th, at 10:15 AM in the Bistro (7th Floor). (Continued) The PALs should look for a physical or environmental cause or pattern, get to know the resident, reassure the resident, leave and come back later, or try another PAL and discuss strategy with team members. We provide our staff with a monthly dementia training to provide them with the tools to be prepared and know how to respond to the situation and use methods of redirection. We make sure our pals are aware to not overreact or express shock because we do not want to cause a sense of embarrassment or shame from the resident. Avoid becoming angry or argumentative and be sensitive and reassuring. This is a confusing time for both resident and family member, but the Belmont Village staff is here to assist. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]. Tomatoes and cranberries keep the doctor away too. New research shows that incorporating these 3 red, round fruits into your daily diet can reduce your risk of heart disease by as much as 40%. A hearthealthy diet is always the first step in treating high cholesterol or high blood. Fortunately, these antioxidant-rich fruits are as tasty as they are healthy. TOMATOES A new study by Tufts University in Boston showed that eating lycopene-rich foods such as tomatoes more than 5x a week over an 11-year period reduced coronary disease risk by 26%. APPLES An apple a day can reduce LDL (bad cholesterol) by as much as 40%, according to a new small Ohio State University study. Be sure to munch on the fruit, rather than drink juice; the peels house the most antioxidants. CRANBERRIES Drinking 3 cups of cranberry juice daily can raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels by 10% and reduce heart disease by 40%, a study at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania showed. Plus, this juice decreased diet-caused atherosclerosis (clogging of the arteries) by preventing plaque from forming. GO,GO,RED!
