GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES The government set a policy to “ensure all pupils receive two hours of good quality Physical Education (PE) lessons per week”. This will encourage people to take part and increase pupils fitness. 2. PE SCHOOL SPORT & CLUB LINKS (PESSCL) The government set up PESSCL to increase sport opportunities for 5-16 year olds. The PESSCL program aims to strengthen links between schools and local clubs. 3. SCHOOL SPORT PARTNERSHIPS School sports partnerships involve a group of schools with a sports college at the centre. It aims to develop a wide range of sports by offering high quality coaching and competitions within the local community. The North School 4. SPORT ENGLAND This organization believes sport can change peoples lives. Sport England developed the Start, Stay, Succeed plan. START: increase participation in sport in order to improve health of the nation. STAY: keep people in sport through effective clubs, facilities, coaches and competition opportunities. 5. Aimed at 14-16 year olds who organize and manage sports activities, dance festivals in local primary schools. Students who do GCSE PE are offered to do this leadership role. 6. ACTIVE KIDS PROGRAMME Supermarkets and enterprises offer voucher programs. Vouchers are collected by parents who shop at the store, and give the vouchers to the school to buy sports equipment. MUSCULAR ENDURANCE The ability to use voluntary muscles many times without getting tired. MUSCULAR STRENGTH The amount of force a muscle can exert against a resistance. BODY COMPOSITION The percentage % of body weight that is fat, muscle and bone. FLEXIBILITY The range of movement possible at a joint. The ability to undertake strength performances quickly. Power = Strength x Speed. BALANCE The ability to retain the centre of mass (gravity) of the body above the base of support with reference to still or moving movements. REACTION TIME The time between the presentation of a stimulus and the onset of movement. SPEED COORDINATION The ability to use two or more body parts together. [Insert Date \ Issue] THE SPORTS PARTICIPATION PYRAMID 4.Elite Elite/Excellence is the peak of the pyramid, where individuals reach sporting excellence. It is smaller here as fewer people take part at this level. Governing bodies of sport are responsible for development at this level as players can play for their country. FOUNDATION This is the base of the pyramid. At this stage people are learning/experiencing basic sport skills. Primary School PE Lessons Top Play Activities Multi-Sport Sessions The North School 3. Performance During this stage young people begin to concentrate on one sport and become very talented in this one. Quality coaching is an important part of player development at this stage. 2. Participation At this stage young people participate regularly in a specific sport for enjoyment. Sports Clubs become more important at this stage as they make links to the next level. Eg.
