OPPORTUNITIES FOR GETTING INVOLVED IN SPORT
1. GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES
The government set a policy to “ensure
all pupils receive two hours of
good quality Physical Education
(PE) lessons per week”. This will
encourage people to take part and
increase pupils fitness.
2. PE SCHOOL SPORT & CLUB LINKS
(PESSCL)
The government set up PESSCL to
increase sport opportunities for 5-16
year olds.
The PESSCL program aims to
strengthen links between schools and
local clubs.
3. SCHOOL SPORT PARTNERSHIPS
School sports partnerships involve a
group of schools with a sports college
at the centre. It aims to develop a wide
range of sports by offering high
quality coaching and
competitions within the local
community.

Aimed at 14-16 year olds who organize and
manage sports activities, dance festivals in
local primary schools. Students who do GCSE
PE are offered to do this leadership role.

Supermarkets and enterprises offer voucher
programs. Vouchers are collected by parents who
shop at the store, and give the vouchers to the school
to buy sports equipment.

THE SPORTS PARTICIPATION PYRAMID
4.Elite
Elite/Excellence is the peak of the pyramid,
where individuals reach sporting
excellence.
It is smaller here as fewer people take part at
this level.
Governing bodies of sport are responsible for
development at this level as players can play for their
country.
FOUNDATION
This is the base of the pyramid. At this stage people are
learning/experiencing basic sport skills.

During this stage young people begin to concentrate on
one sport and become very talented in this one.
Quality coaching is an important part of
player development at this stage.

At this stage young people participate regularly in a

they make links to the next level.
