ENGLISH 10 (SAKABE)
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Come to class with the current book, reader, or packet of material we are studying, charged laptop,
folder paper, pen, and pencil.
2. INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY: Kamehameha Schools provides access to many technological tools
to enhance the teaching and learning process such as laptops, online resources, BlackBoard, probes,
etc. We support the integration of technology as a critical component in preparing students to thrive
in our global society. As appropriate to each course, teachers will provide further classroom
expectations and guidelines as to the extent technology (e.g. laptops, websites, BlackBoard, etc) will
be utilized for research, instruction, assessment, and communication purposes. School rules
governing laptops are in effect.
3. Check EDMODO several times daily. In particular, make sure to check EDMODO right before coming
to class. You are required to be notified as to EDMODO alerts, notes, assignments, and direct
messages via text or email. You are responsible for any information relayed to you from me via
EDMODO. Be mindful of updating EDMODO of any changes to your phone number for text message
notifications. I will not accept any excuse for non-‐receipt of EDMODO notifications.
4. All major essays must be typed. In addition, SAVE A COPY OF EVERY WRITING ASSIGNMENT ON A
FLASH DRIVE AND A SECOND RETRIEVAL LOCATION (i.e. email yourself the file, save to school server,
etc.) In addition to turning in a hard copy of your essay, always upload to EDMODO so that there is
no question of submission time if there is ever a question. Never use “Technical Difficulties” as an
excuse for not turning in an essay or typed assignment. This includes printer difficulties. If you
experience laptop or printer difficulties, it is your responsibility to be resourceful and figure out a
way to turn in your assignment on time.
YOU ARE ADVISED TO SAVE FILES OF ALL MAJOR ESSAYS AND ASSIGNMENTS UNTIL THE END OF THE SEMESTER.
5. Homework is due at the beginning of the period in which it is due. Late work is NOT accepted. An
assignment that is NOT turned in when it is due will receive a numeric score of “zero “. If you only
partially completed the assignment, turn in what you completed and accept the consequences.
There is no penalty (per se) for late work because there is no late work.
6. ABSENCES: Work that has been assigned ahead of time, but which is due on the day a student is
absent must still be turned in on the day it is due. Submission may be done electronically via
EDMODO (1st), email (2nd), and/or dropped off (3rd). If new reading or homework is assigned while a
student is absent, he/she is expected to keep up with the class via EDMODO so that he/she is up to
speed when he/she returns.
7. It is YOUR responsibility to ask for clarification or to come in for study help before an assignment is
due. I am available to answer questions via EDMODO, email ([email protected]) or phone (842-‐
8025). I am available for study help in my office (Kekuanaoa 202) during periods 1, 2, 6, and 7.
8. All work, unless it is a group assignment, must be completed by you as an individual.
9. You must inform me beforehand if you have a planned absence or upcoming fieldtrip. It is YOUR
responsibility to obtain any assignment you miss due to a planned absence or field trip. To do this,
3
check EDMODO. Homework that is due on the day of a planned absence or fieldtrip MUST STILL BE
TURNED IN by the prescribed time. Any assignment due on the day of a planned absence or field
trip that is NOT turned in will receive a “zero.”
10.All typed papers are to be in MLA format (unless specifically stated otherwise). For non-‐typed
assignments, write your name, period, and date in the upper right corner of the paper. Your
assignment grade may be lowered if you do not include this information or if you consistently leave
out this information.
11.You are expected to be seated and ready to work before the bell rings. Habitual tardies are not
acceptable.
12.Disrespect towards anyone will not be accepted, whether verbally or in written work.
13.Plagiarism and other forms of cheating are NOT acceptable. Any and all such forms of dishonesty
will result in NEGATIVE 10 POINTS for the assignment. In addition, your parents, your grade-‐level
counselor and the unit Vice Principal will be contacted if any of your work is copied.
14.Cell phones and MP3 players must be stowed away before the bell rings. No headphones
or earbuds are to be worn during class.
15.Consuming food and beverages during class is a privilege. Respect our space by disposing of all trash
and keeping desktops clean and dry for the next person. Also, consume discretely. If your
consuming is distracting others, you are not being discrete.
GRADING
Assignments
All assignments will be graded using the Standard scale that appears on page 16 of the 2011-‐
2012 High School Student/Parent Handbook. Minor Quizzes are worth between 10-‐20 points.
Homework assignments are worth an average of 30 points. Essays are worth 100 points.
Projects are worth 100 points. Unit Tests are worth 100 points. During quarters where there is
an equal amount of homework, quizzes, tests, essays, and projects, straight points are used to
determine the grade. For quarters where there is a disproportionate amount of homework,
quizzes, tests, essays, and projects, “category weighting” is used: Homework (25-‐30%); Essays
(25-‐30%); Tests & Quizzes (30%); Participation (10-‐20%).
Quarter and Semester Grades:
The semester grade will be computed by adding the two quarter averages (40% each) and the
final exam (20%).
"Extra credit" information:
Extra credit does not replace required assignments. Extra credit may be earned in order to raise
a student’s grade or improve a student’s average. However, if a student is missing any
assignments, extra credit is not an option. Extra credit must be planned with the teacher and
completed one week before the end of the quarter (or earlier). Extra credit needs to
complement a unit the class is studying.
4
Policy on make-‐up TESTS/QUIZZES:
Arrangements for TESTS or QUIZZES missed due to an ABSENCE must be made upon a student’s
return to English
class. Tests or quizzes missed due to an absence must be made up within 1 week of a studen
t’s return to class. Any test of quiz not made up within 1 week of a student’s return after an
absence will receive a “zero”.
