Programme Description
The study of history provides a fascinating contrast of periods, personalities and approaches. It helps us
understand the lives of people who have lived before us and the way in which they have shaped the world in
which we live. Study of the subject sharpens the critical faculties and the skills developed can be used in many
other fields. It is hoped that the contrast between the late medieval, early modern period and twentieth century
fascism will prove both interesting and intellectually stimulating for students.

develops skills that are highly valued in many professions Very high percentage of students go on to study in
University and many do History Degrees The Department organises visits and theatre trips as appropriate
Progression and Employment
A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to higher level qualifications such as Degrees or Higher
National Diplomas.
The history specialist may become an academic, lawyer, teacher, librarian, archivist or museum officer.
The study of history is also valuable in gaining entry to journalism, broadcasting, politics, the civil service, and a
wide variety of management posts in business and commerce.

UNIT 5 - COURSEWORK (AWAITING APPROVAL)
Method of Assessment
AS Level - Two written examinations. HY1 - Two structured questions from a choice of four (1:40 minutes in
total). HY2 - In depth study one set of questions based on historical sources (1:20 minutes).
A Level - Two written examinations, one 1hr 30 minutes and one 50 minutes plus one coursework assignment.
Entry Requirements
Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C, one of which must be
either GCSE Mathematics or English Language and History. Students who have not taken GCSE History but have
a high level of ability in related subjects will be considered for entry. Entry for mature students without formal
qualifications is at the discretion of the Curriculum area.
