English3IBisyearoneofatwo-yearprogramthatisanadvancedstudyofliterature,aswellas,expositorywritingandoral
communicationskills.ThePart1WorksInTranslationPaperandthePart4OralPresentationarerequiredassessments
completedinthejunioryearduringsecondsemester.BothassessmentscounttowardtheIBDiplomaandIBCertificatein
English(collegecredit).Theseassessmentsareatotalof40%ofthestudents’IBEnglishscore.Studentsthatcompletethese
assessmentsintheirjunioryearandgoontocompletetheadditional60%oftheirassessmentsintheirsenioryear(SeetheIB
Syllabusfor2016-2018)mayreceivecollegecreditinEnglishiftheirfinalscoreisa4orabove.
Expectations
Inordertomaintainasafeandpositivelearningenvironment,studentsaretocomplywiththefollowing:
! Beinclass(missingclasswillimpactyoursuccessinthisclass).Beontime(tardinesswillimpactyoursuccessinthis
class).Inorderforstudentstolearn,theyneedtobeinclasstoparticipate.
! Studentswillbeexpectedtorespectallschoolpropertyandmaterials,aswellasrespecteachother.
! Eachstudentwillbeexpectedtocomeprepared,toparticipate,andtoabidebyallclassroompoliciesandprocedures.
! Studentsmustberesponsiblefortheiractions,behavior,andanyrequiredmaterialsneededformyclass.
! Studentsareexpectedtogivethebesteffortthattheycan,everyday.Successisdirectlyrelatedtoeffort.
! All rules in the student handbook will also apply and any failure to abide by these classroom expectations could
negativelyimpactgrades.
Materials
Allstudentsarerequiredtousetwocompositionnotebooksforthisclass.NOEXCEPTIONS!Spiralnotebooksor3-ringbinders
arenotallowed.Inaddition,highlightersandpagemarkerscouldbeofbenefittoyourstudent.
Itisrecommendedthatyoupurchasethenovelswecover.Theabilitytomarkandtakenotesinthebookswillprovideahuge
benefittoeachstudent.
Grades/GradingScale
Studentswillbeexpectedtocompleteavarietyoftasksforeachtext.Assessmentswillbeworthmorethanformativetasks
andgeneralcourseworkandfinalgradeswillbebasedupontotalpointsearned.Thedailytasks,formativeassessments,and
courseworkforeachunitwillhelpstudentsdevelopskillsandknowledge,andindicateprogresstowardtheAssessmentstobe
given.Examplesofformativeassessmentsandcourseworkcanincludein-classassignments,closereadings,notes,highlighting
atext,outlines,graphicorganizers,homework,dialecticaljournals,quizzes,andotherassignmentsattheteacher’sdiscretion.

AbsencesandMake-UpWork
Attendanceisanimportantpartofeachstudent’ssuccessinthisclass.Thisclassistaughtatarigorousandfastpace.Regular
androutineattendanceisnecessaryforsuccess.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytocometotheteacherbeforeschool,after
school,orbeforeoraftertheclassperiodtoreceiveanymissedwork.Further,studentsareresponsibleforanymaterialthat
wascoveredduringhis/herabsence/tardy.Ifthereisnotanexcusedabsencethenmake-upworkmaynotbegiven.
a. Oralpresentationsthataremissedwillberecordedasazerofortheassignment.ItisuptothestudenttomakePRIOR
arrangementsifapresentationconflictswithascheduledappointment.
b. Essayassignments(submittedto“turnitin.com”)WILLNOTbeallowedlateunderanycircumstance.
c. **Allmajorassignmentsaredueontheassignedduedate,regardlessofattendance.**(Ifsomethingcomesup,call
me,calltheschool;sometypeofnotificationisexpected.)Itemscanbeturnedintotheofficeoreventurnedinearly
ifneedbe.
d. There will be no excuse for not getting in touch with me when a major assignment is due. It is the student’s
responsibilitytospeakwiththeteachertoworkoutwhentestscanbemadeupbeforehand.
e. Assignments/Assessments that are not made up within 2 days of the excused absence will count as a zero for the
grade.
f. Missingclasstimeforextra-curricularactivitymaynegativelyimpactstudent’sgradeifworkisnotmadeup.Extracurricularactivitiesdonotexcusestudentsfromassignedworkofthatday.
g. Manyoftheunitsareaccompaniedwithacalendarincluding:readings,assignments,andduedates.Theexpectation
isthatstudentsarekeepingupwiththecalendarregardlessofabsences.
h. Latework,ifaccepted(atthediscretionoftheteacher),willresultinsometypeofgradingpenalty(atthediscretionof
theteacher).Workthatisaweek,weeks,ormonthslatewillnotbeaccepted.
i. Idonotassignextra-creditormakeupwork.
AcademicHonesty/Plagiarism
Plagiarismandcheatingiscompletelyunacceptableandwillnotbetolerated.Ifanystudentiscaughtdoingeither,
immediateadministrativeactionwillbetaken,alongwithazerogradefortheassignment/project.Studentshavesigned/will
signanIBAcademicHonorContractandwillbeheldtothestandardsofthecontract.Allworkisexpectedtobecompleted
individuallyunlessnoted.
