If you look below the surface, you might find even greater differences‐such as various depths of understanding of Jesus, and varying abili‐ ties to see Jesus in their daily lives. Today’s readings give us a variety of ways to understand Jesus‐the res‐ urrected Lord. In our readings today, we hear of what could be seen as competing images of Jesus: both the long‐waited Messiah, ready to take the throne of David, and as the unblemished lamb who shed His blood for our sake. In Acts, Peter says that Jesus was delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God to suffer crucifix‐ ion and a horrible death to win our salvation –then to rise from the dead to restore life, and ascend into heaven where He now sits at the right hand of the Father. Turning to the Gospel, we see a compassionate and loving Jesus, walking with two of His despondent dis‐ ciples as they describe their state of mind and the events of the past days. Jesus accepts them where they are, and helps them to understand that He is the fulfillment of the prophets in the Hebrew Scriptures. Then Jesus fully revealed Himself through the break‐ ing of the bread. Let us take some time today to ponder Christ’ pas‐ sion, death and resurrection by which we are saved and redeemed, and given the promise and hope of eternal life. Let us do our best to imitate the actions of Jesus in today’s Gospel by being willing to walk along with people we encounter in our daily lives making an effort to listen to their stories with pa‐ tience and gentleness. It is the hope that the dome will be completed by 2020 which will be the one hundredth anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the basilica. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the patronal church of our nation, dedi‐ cated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception. This great Marian shrine ex‐ ists today because of the generosity of American Cath‐ olics and Clergy, the prayers of the faithful, and the hard work of the artisans and laborers who began building it nearly one hundred years ago. This shrine is a reflection of the diversity of the cultures and eth‐ nicities of the United States and the unity and univer‐ sality of the Catholic Church as evidenced in the more that 80 chapels and oratories dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. The national collection for the Trinity Dome offers the faithful an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by honoring their Catholic heritage and entrusting them‐ selves and their families to the Mother of God. This is a one time only collection with will take place on Sunday, May 14th. Thank you for your support to help complete America’s Catholic Church in advance of it’s 100th anniversary.
