August 2015 When I go outside these days it still feels like summer; it is hot and sticky in the afternoons and I am thankful for air conditioning. However, the reality is that summer is wrapping up, at least as far as the school calendar goes. In recognition of the new school year beginning, we are going to have a Promotion Sunday combined worship on August the 9th. This will be an exciting time of celebration together as the whole church community at South Ashland UMC. We will promote our children in Sunday School who are moving up to the next class. We will also have prayers of blessing for all of our people who are at work in the school systems, from teachers and staff to those working in the backpack ministry and the Good News Clubs. And finally, this will be a rare opportunity for the whole church to be in worship together. In order to accommodate the number of people in the church, we are going to meet in the Family Life Center on August 9th. We will have this combined worship at 10:00 am. Our children’s Sunday School Hour will begin after the service at 11:00. This will be the first opportunity for the children to attend their new classes with their new teachers. The adult Sunday School classes have the option of meeting before the service at 9:00 or after at 11:00. This decision needs to be made on a class basis. I know that this is a lot to work through but the time of worship together and celebration of our children and our school ministries with definitely prove to be worth it. I hope that you will come join us on the 9th and every Sunday for our uplifting worship and challenging interaction with the Word of God. Please be sure to read the rest of the newsletter as there is information contained about many upcoming programs this fall. We are preparing to begin our fall Sunday and Wednesday programming, including a new Sunday evening marriage enrichment class. We will once again offer dinner and Bible study on Wednesday evenings. And there is much more going on in the life of the church here at South Ashland that you need to be a part of. So, check it out and come join us. Of course, God and I argued back and forth about it. I mean, how was I going to do it? My cancer had recurred for the 5th time. I had just finished a grueling 6 weeks of chemo and radiation; and, I was facing another invasive, in-depth surgery and more radiation. Plus to be honest, I wasn’t sure I would survive the cancer battle this time. However, God settled my heart and promised me three things: 1) I would be the director and have the support of the church, 2) I would have an abundance of volunteers, and 3) I would be healthy. One by one God’s promises rang true and I was abundantly blessed. This year during Camp Kilimanjaro, we fed around 160 staff/campers a night thanks to a fine tuned kitchen crew led by Goldie Bentine. We averaged 83 campers each night (even in the monsoon weather) and had 93 campers on the last night! The campers raised a total of $863.11 for missions that will be donated to the Children’s Hunger Fund as a means of delivering hope and the gospel to suffering children across America and around the world. In total, the kids at VBS raised enough money to provide 3,452 nourishing meal packs! Isn’t God amazing!? During VBS, it was all hands on deck! Kamiliah and Damola Asafa and the youth were instrumental in teaching in the mission room and coordinating youth helpers. The youth also created props, designed banners, constructed sets, and became the true hands and feet of Jesus as they knocked on doors inviting our community to be a part of VBS. Jr Fitzpatrick was essential for creating the technology that made VBS come to life and he was an excellent foreman during set construction! This year at VBS, we had over 70 volunteers who dedicated their time, energy, and prayers to making this a huge success for the kids. People put in long shifts after work to teach God’s word, help in the kitchen, transport kids, register kids, count endless bags of pennies, do science experiments, and act in the drama. During the closing, Bev Moore and Darris Duncan directed the campers in featured camp songs while Alicia Katterheinrich led the 10-12 year old class (which averaged 23 nightly) in performing a song all in American Sign Language. Teachers also handed out certificates this year which were done in calligraphy by Charlene Cooper. This year VBS has been extra special for me, especially with the theme Bible verse from Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” God is good all the time. He provided every need through VBS. He provided each of you to be a part of it in some way. For that I am ever thankful! Blessings and Love, Cristen, Bob, and Audrey Pulliam Come join us for a summer full of fun, fellowship, food, and diving into God’s Word together. The children in Costa Rica are in need of our assistance. In order for the children to attend primary school the children must provide their own school supplies. Without uniforms and these supplies they are unable to attend school. The costs of these supplies are rising each year. Last year the average student’s school supplies cost an equivalent to $175US. This is very unreachable for most Costa Rican families. They are torn between feeding their families or sending their children to school. How can you help? Bring in school supplies and place them in the boxes located by the elevator, in the front entrance and in the rear of the sanctuary. School Supplies needed Pencils 1 Subject Notebooks Markers Backpacks Highlighters Colored Pencils Glue Sticks Pencil Sharpeners Pens Rulers Rubber Bands Scissors Crayons Loose Leaf Paper Calculators Thank you for being the hands and feet of Christ for the children of Costa Rica!! ASAFA COSTA RICA MISSION T-SHIRT FUNDRAISER God has blessed our family with an AMAZING opportunity to serve his children. This winter we will be spending 10 weeks in Costa Rica (January 12-March 22). We are so excited for this adventure! Our plane tickets are purchased and the girl’s passports are on the way! We will be spending our time there on the Methodist farm with Mary & Marion doing what we can to help in their ministry and being flexible to The Lord’s leadings while we are there. Although we know that flexibility is the name of the game as missionaries, we are already aware of many projects Mary wants us to complete while we are there. This will include home repair and maintenance, work on any of the local churches or parsonages that may need it, yard work, painting, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical work, sorting supplies, packing supplies, kitchen work, office work for Mary, VBS for multiple towns and villages, women’s devotions and crafts, and whatever else the Lord may lay in our path. As you can imagine many of these projects will take funds to purchase supplies to make completion doable. We have decided to do some fundraisers to make it possible for us to do the most work we can while we are there. We are selling the T-shirts for $15 to provide funding for the mission work we will be doing. If you would like to purchase one please fill out the order form below and turn into the church office. If you feel led to give aside from this fundraiser, please make checks payable to SAUMC and write Asafa Costa Rica Mission on the memo line. Above all please keep our family in your prayers during our stay in Costa Rica and during the months leading up to our trip. You can follow our trip and the work the Lord has allowed us to do there on our family’s blog (www.AFamilyAfterGodsOwnHeart.com). We are so excited to see what God has in store for us!!
