If tennis is your game, Odessa Country Club has some great tennis courts and staff
to help you in your play. We have six courts that are ready when you are. You can call
ahead to book a court or you can just drop in when you are ready to play. With this
West Texas heat, you may want to play your game at night as the temperature starts to
lower. Please remember when playing at night to turn off the court lights as you leave.
Also, at all times, proper tennis attire is to be worn, (no swimsuits please) and always
remember to wear your proper tennis court shoes!

Sometimes we are remiss in
telling you, the members of
Odessa Country Club, “Thank
you”! This past month we again
saw how you showed your interest
and support as you participated
in the Focus Groups. We were
sorry that we did not have room
for each of you that expressed a
desire to share in these groups.
However, we appreciate your
willingness to serve. We thank
7LP3HGHQ
each of you that shared in these
3UHVLGHQW
groups. Your input was extremely
valuable as we prepare a much needed survey. We appreciate
the giving of your time and the interest you showed for Odessa
Country Club. The survey itself will allow each and every
member and spouse to state their opinion.
Another group of our members that I would like to just
say a special “Thank you” to are the members serving on our
committees. We currently have approximately fifty members
serving on nine different committees. I have started a two
year rotation system for our committees beginning this year.
For example, a committee with six members, there would
be three new members and three others serving their second
year. Therefore, several of our committee members have never
served on an OCC Committee before. Our committees are
chaired by at least one of our current Board of Directors.
These committees meet either monthly or every other month.
The Committee Members are appointed each year in April
by the incoming President and the respective board member
who heads up that particular committee. If you would like
to serve, please remember to state your desires to the next
President and Board of Directors.
The Half Way House and Restrooms are finally finished.
They have been a long time coming. We have been very
anxious for the completion of these facilities, but I think
worth the wait, after you see how nice they are. In fact, some
of our members used the HWH as a shelter from the brief rain
we had in mid-July, even before the HWH was finished.
The year of ‘11 has turned out to be interesting, from the
coldest, to the hottest to the driest! In spite of these extremes,
we are glad to see all of you out enjoying the Club. It is just
fun to see all the Club being used - patio, clubhouse, tennis
courts, swimming pool, golf courses. OCC is the place to be!
And it was the place to be for so many of you July 4th - that
is great!
We look forward to seeing you around the Club often
during August.

August is shaping up to be
one of the busiest months of the
year. The club calendar is filled
with activities for all to enjoy.
Little Gusher’s camps, golf
tournaments, tennis leagues,
and dining specials are to name
a few. Check the enclosed
calendar for specifics or call
the front desk for details and

reservations.

I want to say thanks to all members who volunteered and
served on our focus group committees. Each session helped
focus our research objectives for the upcoming survey.
Your passion and commitment to the future of this club is
appreciated.
This season we have conducted three great club
championships. The first was our Men’s Stroke Play
Championship, which was won by Phil George. Second, Brian
Madison captured our Men’s Match Play Championship.
Lastly, our Ladies Club Championship was won by Denise
Carbajal. Congratulations to our Club Champions!
Your staff and management team enjoy serving you. If we
can be of any assistance or help make your time at the club
more enjoyable, please let us know.

I would like to begin by
thanking all the members who
participated in the 2011 Men’s
Match Play Championship. We
had a great turnout this year in
support of the tournament as well
as some very hard fought matches.
Congratulations to all of the flight
&OD\.LQQDLUG
winners who will be representing
'LUHFWRURI*ROI
Odessa Country Club at the
Midessa Cup. The Golf Professional staff and I are looking
forward to this month’s 4-man Invitational starting on the
18th. It promises to be an exciting golf tournament once
again. Good luck to all those participating and don’t forget
about the shootout being held Wednesday night before the
tournament. We will also be hosting an Alternate Shot
shootout on the 5th, so keep an eye out for the sign up board
in the pro shop and find yourself a partner. Finally, near
the end of the month, will be the Wrangler Classic. Odessa
Country Club is proud to put on another great outing in
support of the Odessa College Golf Team.
Congratulations are also in order for the winners of the
flights for the Ladies Club Championship held last month
as well. There was plenty of great golf played by our Ladies
here at OCC. August is also a big month for the ladies with
the Summer Classic. Make sure to stop by the Women’s
Locker Room to get you and your partner signed up and
take part in the event of the summer. The golf staff will
also be hosting our final Junior Golf Camp of the summer
on Tuesday, August 2nd – Thursday, August 4th. We have
had a great turnout for all of our camps this summer and
all of our junior golfers have had plenty of fun learning the
FUNdamentals of golf.
As always, Odessa Country Club needs every member’s
continued assistance in keeping your golf courses in the
absolute best condition possible in this scorching weather.
We have painted lines on all of the holes to direct you back
to the paths in order to keep the grass near and on the greens
healthy and green. We appreciate your help, and as always,
myself and my golf staff are here to support and help each
and every member any way we possibly can.

Congratulations to our members that hit some
amazing golf shots in the past few weeks. Make
sure to congratulate them when you see them:
Glynn Braudaway holed out for eagle on #4 of the
Old Course from 154 yards with a 9 iron.
Brady Mason made a spectacular Hole In One
on #17 of the Old Course.
He hit a 9 iron from 168 yards.
Keep up the great golfing!
We look forward to seeing many more!

Jake McCullough, our Head Golf Professional, was recently certified in TPI Golf Fitness. He has since been working with and
training our other professionals about the relationships between golf and fitness. We now are able to put you through a fitness
screen that will evaluate your fitness level as needed for efficient golf. Then, if you are interested, we have a group of trainers that
we have been working with who can help you to get rid of your physical limitations. You will be on your way to better golf and feel
better throughout your day. For more information on this program, please contact a member of our professional staff.
Are you in this group? We have often heard the definition of insanity as repeating the same task while expecting different
results. For many people, this happens everyday when they go to the course. Golfers go to the course with a new tip they just read
in the latest golf magazine and feel like they have finally figured the game out. Only after a couple of shots they realize they have
not increased their proficiency at all.
Why are you not improving? Research shows that most golfers are not improving their ball striking abilities because there
bodies cannot perform the athletic motion due to some deficiency in their flexibility or stability. These limitations create swing
compensations that negatively affect the mechanics of the motion. Through research from TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) we
now know exactly how physical limitations affect golf performance.
What is TPI? The Titleist Performance Institute is the industry leader in golf health and fitness and they work with some of the
top golfers in the world. It has an advisory board comprised of an elite group of outstanding professionals in a variety of fields that
affect golf performance such as: medical, golf, fitness, junior golf, nutrition, biomechanics, and education. Through their research,
programs, and education, we are able to better understand exactly how a person’s body can affect golf performance.

“Summer Classic Tournament” will soon be here, again remember
the dates August 23rd thru the 25th. By the time you are reading
this article, we will be getting ready for this great tournament we have
been planning all year. We are all so excited about this tournament.
In July, they had another Ladies Clinic and although I was unable
to attend, I heard it was great. The next dates we have for a Ladies
Clinic are September 24th thru 25th. Please check with the Pro in
the Golf Shop to make sure there has not been a change.
We are still waiting on the results of a few tournaments from July, but since this will be going to the press, we may not have
the results until next month. This will also hold true thru August.
Because so many of our tournaments are not played untill the end of each month, be sure you still check all of your emails
and the bulletin board in the Ladies Locker Room.
The next Permian Basin Play will be August 17th at Green Tree CC .
Remember ladies, during August Sign Up by 8:30 AM and Tee Time 9:00 AM for our Tuesday Play Days. We hope to see all
of you this month for our Play Days.

For all the ladies attending the July 8th Women’s Association Luncheon, they entered a room that exuded with a patriotic
atmosphere. The tables were decorated with a spray of red, white, and blue exploding stars accented with four larger stars.
Chairman Ramona Thompson, Marge Garner, Pauline Gage and
Wanda Jones added to the patriotic atmosphere in their red, white, and
blue jackets and sweaters.
The patriotic theme was highlighted by the Permian High School Jr.
ROTC Group Presenting a Salute To The Colors. Sargent First Class
Hoover led the young men in presenting the United States and Texas
Flags, and then led in the pledge to both the United States and Texas
Flags. We were honored to have this delightful group of young men
present a very moving ceremony. The young men, ranging in ages from
fifteen to seventeen years of age, are all members of the Permian Jr.
ROTC program. They are actively involved in programs such as this
in the community and are learning lifelong skills and training in self
Chairman Ramona Thompson, Marge Garner,
discipline. They showed a great respect for not only our country and
Pauline Gage & Wanda Jones
our flags, but a respect for their commander Sargent First Class Hoover.
We were honored to have this special group of young men.
President Evelyn Lafrentz welcomed all of the ladies to the July
Luncheon and complimented the July Hostesses on such a special
luncheon. Evelyn announced the winners of the Cash Gifts, Jackie
Wilson and Ramona Thompson, and the Sunday Buffet, Chrystal
Fouche. Evelyn called on our Social Chairman Sue Wikelski. Sue
reminded the members of our upcoming programs for 2011. The
September Luncheon will feature a Style Show by Ginny’s Collection.
This is a greatly anticipated event. The luncheon will feature styles from
Ginny’s, modeled by our own OCC Women’s Association Ladies. If you
would like to be a part of the models, please get in touch with Sue.
Permian High School Jr. ROTC
Dillard’s will get us in the holiday mood with a presentation of
“Holiday Tables”. They will give us ideas for ways to create both the special formal and informal holiday table.
The perfect finish for our year will be our December Luncheon featuring Christmas Entertainment by Bronco Legacy from
Odessa High School.
Our July Luncheon was followed by an afternoon of games. The winners were: High Beverly Martin, 2nd High Doris
McElmurry, and other winners Charlotte Hunter, Shirley Klaus, Frankie Sorenson and Chrystal Fouche.
We hope to see all of you for our next luncheon Friday, August 12th at 12:00 Noon.

There is nothing better than to
enjoy a nice refreshing Caesar salad
and a glass of pinot grigio to cool off
in this “West Texas” heat.
When making the dressing from
scratch, you must follow the recipe
so that you taste the stages of the
(GGLH+DWFK,,
dressing. To get the best flavor and
)%0DQDJHU
consistency of the dressing it’s best
to use a wooden bowl and spoon.
,QJUHGLHQWV
1 Anchovie
1 Tbl of chopped garlic
I Tbl of Grey Poupon
1 Egg Yolk
2 Tbl of Worcestershire sauce
2 dash of Tabasco
6oz of Salad oil
1 ½ tbl of red wine vinegar
Hint of lemon
Romaine Lettuce
Shredded Parmesan Cheese
Croutons
Put the anchovie in a bowl, preferably a wooden bowl. Hold
the bowl at a 45 degree angle and only use a small portion
of the bowl to grind the anchovie until it forms a paste. Add
the garlic to the paste and continue mixing. Next, we add the
grey poupon. Be sure that you are mixing this thoroughly.
Next, add the egg yolk. At this point, the dressing should still
have a paste-like texture. Next, mix the worcestshire sauce,
and the Tabasco. Then, add the salad oil and the red wine
vinegar. At this point, the dressing is going to look broken,
but as you continue to mix, it will become a creamy texture.
You are almost done! Last, add the lemon. Do not add too
much lemon, only two or three drops. Now that you have
your dressing , add your romaine, parmesan cheese, croutons
and begin to toss it so that the dressing is real light on the
lettuce. Add a piece of grilled chicken if you wish. Enjoy this
with a nice glass of Italian white wine.

This month calls for an old standby,
a very wonderful cabernet. Trinity
Oakes Cabernet Sauvignon is from

and 50% from the Lodi region
(San Joaquin County), California’s

largest premium wine growing area.

After a 10 day fermentation in the
stainless tanks, the wine was aged in American and French
oak to round out and soften its rich cherry and currant
flavors. This wine exhibits delicious aromas of black cherry
and currant with notes of green olive, cedar, dried herbs and
vanilla. Rich and medium in body, with smooth, supple
tannings, the flavors suggest cherry, cassis and nutmeg spice.
The wine will pair well with braised and roasted meat dishes
such as pot roast, prime rib, hearty pasta and chicken. You
may enjoy this by the bottle at $20.00 or by the glass at $6.50.

Here it is, already August and the summer is winding down. How fast our summer vacation days fly by. Good news is there is
still plenty of time to swim and enjoy the cool water on our HOT days here in West Texas. It is not too late to plan a Back-ToSchool party for your friends and family. Contact Becky to see what OCC can do for your special occasion to end the summer
before school starts.
Please remember safety is the number one concern in or around the pools. The lifeguards are here to make sure those rules are
enforced for your family’s safety. Take time to thank them for the job they have been doing. Although lifeguarding looks like
an easy job sitting there, the guard has many things to look for while sitting in their chair. Another thing is, it is hot sitting in
the chair and not being able to get in the water to cool off. Our Pool Manager, Matt has been working hard to keep the guards
trained and ready for action if needed. If a guard was not able to perform the tasks needed to provide the proper care in an
emergency, the guard was not scheduled to work until he/she was able to show Matt the proper techniques in all pool emergency
situations.
It has been a great summer here at the club with so many activities for each member and their family. Please watch the
calendar for upcoming events here at the pool and around the club. Remember, Family Night at the Pool on Tuesdays.

Nice rain shower for the Links Course on July 12 and more is needed. Our rainfall totals
since last August for the Old Course is .22” and for the Links Course .57”. As the drought
continues, however, our golf courses are hanging in there. Many of the drought management
programs implemented at your Greens Committee and with the Boards approval are working
very well. We have improved our soil amendment programs with the increase of Lime and
Gypsum applications to off-set the salt dominance in the soil, therefore increasing turfgrass
growth and improved water infiltration. We have started our irrigation amendment programs
to also increase our watering efficiency and salt-remediation. These programs include injection
of wetting agents and soluble Calcium through the irrigation systems that will increase our
watering efficiency by up to 20 percent. Other drought management programs are: slight
*UHJ+LQWRQ
'LURI*ROI&RXUVH0DLQW increases in mowing heights on greens, tees and fairways, restriction on amount of irrigation
going in roughs and to focus irrigation in high-play areas (greens, tees and fairways), and also in
the future root pruning of trees to reduce competition for turf.
Greens on both golf courses are doing well with a good root system and turf cover that are helping us get through the heat
and lack of rain. The next couple of months are critical as we see a slight change in weather patterns this time of year. However,
our night temperatures on the golf courses have been in the mid to high 60’s at 6 AM. Our daily morning monitoring of
temperatures have been around 65’s at the Links and about 67’s at the Old Course. It can be 104 during the day as long as we
have 60’s at night. Our greens irrigation is always scheduled in the early morning hours (as late as possible, usually around 4:30
to 6:00 AM) to take advantage of driving that cool irrigation deep into the soil profile. Our good turf cover and cool nights are
very critical for bent/poa success in the summer. Last year at this time, with all the rain, our day temperatures were in the 90’s
and nights in the mid 70’s, not a good combination.
One of our main focuses is on improving turf quality on the
practice range tees. We have a few struggles to overcome with
the heavy clay material that the tees were constructed with along
with the drought & high-sodium water. These have given us
tees with poor quality turf. Practice tees, due to their nature of
high traffic and use, need to be able to recover turf every 14-21
days to provide turf for practicing, we are not there…..we are in
survival mode. Changes in practice tee maintenance programs
i want the hospital that knows
include: doubling soil amendments (Lime and Gypsum),
doubling fertility applications (nitrogen and potassium) and
increased aerification (coring and slicing) along with topdressing
You and your family have come to trust the fast, effective cardiac care at

ORMC, but there is another emergency that is just as critical. A stroke,
changing out irrigation heads to improve coverage and to fight
or “brain attack,” is one of the leading causes of death, but it is the
#1 cause of disability. Major symptoms of stroke appear suddenly.

Tip of the Month: Praying for rain is always a good thing...
but He doesn’t always answer with Yes. Be prepared, this drought
is not over and may be a fact of life going into the future. Did
you know that Fescue grown in full sun needs twice the water as
Bermuda and you have to mow it in the winter months. There
are several new, improved, salt-tolerant Bermudas and a couple
of moderately shade tolerant Bermudas you could install in your
lawns for the price of the water you’re using on your Fescue.

Tennis News
We have had a great summer on the courts here at Odessa Country Club. Thank you to everyone
who participated and supported our tennis program this summer. We will be wrapping up our
summer programs the week of August 13th. Our Fall Tennis Programs will begin on August 30th.
Be sure to call a week or two before to reserve a spot and get your preferred time slot. See you on
the courts!
For the month of August, we have a couple of events scheduled. On August 20th, we have our
Back To School Jr Tournament. This will be a great event for the Jr High players wanting to get
some matches in before school gets started, and get you prepared for try-outs at your local school.
Then the following weekend of the 26th and 27th, we will be hosting the high school Petro Plex
'DYLG0HQGH]
Tournament, so members come by and check out some of our top Jrs in action: John Durell, Tate
'LUHFWRURI7HQQLV
Beakley, Ryan Morton and Megan Carlson.
As you can see by the pictures, we hosted the Odessa Hwy 80 Tournament for the first time in 12 years. This tournament
brought in some great players from Lubbock, Abilene, and Southlake and the surrounding areas. In the girls 14’s, we had Reagan
Collins from Lubbock that was nationally ranked in the 12’s, dominating this division, only dropping one game the entire
tournament. Robert Woody from Lubbock took home the championship in the Boys 16’s by
taking out the number one seed Super Champ Colin Marker from SouthLake in the Semifinals. In the finals, he defeated Rahil Patel from Abilene in straight sets. In the boys 14’s,
Nital Patel from Abilene dominated this division taking out David Bryd from Big Spring.
In the girls 12’s, Katherine Abraham took first, Megan Melcher won the 16’s and in the 18’s,
Kristen Kames won her division. All of these girls were from Lubbock. We had a total of
50 entries and we used two sites, OCC and the old Mission Dorado courts. I would like to
say a special thank you to Steve Steen, our site director, and Richard Morton, our U.S.T.A
Official. Thanks Guys, Great Job!
I would like to finish on a special note and
Girls’ 12 Singles Champion
mention our special guests we had at our Breakfast
Katherine Abraham
at Wimbledon on July 4th. Our first guest was
Angela Gilliland from Dallas, the daughter in-law
of Jim Gilliland. Then we had the Dan Carpenter
Gang. We had his son Carrick and his wife Jennifer
from Boston, and Dan’s son in-law Mitch Cox
from North Carolina. I just want to say thank you
for playing and making this great for our members
Boys Doubles
to enjoy and we hope to see you all next year.

Tip of the Month
How to pick a doubles partner
1. Find someone who you can get along with
and have some fun.
2. Make sure your partner compliments your game
Example: If you’re the type of player that’s a finisher, you
want a player that keeps a lot of balls in play. If you keep a
lot in play, you want a partner that’s aggressive, and puts
the ball away. This is called, Hammer and Wedge Theory.
I hope this helps you find a doubles partner!
