Nouns - Hebrew With Halabe

Tool No. 3a
Frequently Occurring Nouns
(Both singular and plural nouns with possessive suffixes)
Lessons 19 and on
The main purpose of the following List is to help you learn some frequently occurring nouns. Familiarizing yourself with these nouns will make your text
study easier by saving you unnecessary searches in your Lexicon. Start by learning the nouns in their free-standing forms, and their meanings.
Use this list together with Noun Parsing Chart (3) and with Tools No. 4 & 4a. Try recognizing singular and plural nouns in your text, even when they
appear with possessive suffixes and at times with their consequent changes in vowels.
Also, gradually practice reading aloud the complete noun declensions (the noun with the possessive suffixes).
In this Tool, both singular and plural forms of the nouns are presented with the possessive suffixes.
You are not expected to memorize whole declensions of nouns with their exact vowels. Your reading practice will help you internalize this very important
element of the Biblical Hebrew, similar to practicing scales when learning music.
With much practice and wider exposure to the Biblical text, you will eventually grow out of using this Tool and proceed into more independent reading.
Note:
• Plural forms are printed in bold letters.
• Technically, any noun can be inflected in full (have possessive suffixes of all persons added), as well as have its construct state form (Lesson 9). The
incomplete presentation of certain nouns in the list reflects their smaller distribution in the Biblical text (see for example, nos. 2, 10, 11). Most of the
nouns offered have a wider distribution.
• In most cases, inflections (presentations of nouns with the possessive suffixes of all persons added) include the f.p. possessive suffixes, which are not
very common in Biblical text, in order to allow you to practice them.
• Translations do not necessarily cover all its possible meanings. If a translation provided does not fit the context with which you are dealing, consult
your Lexicon to find a more satisfactory translation.
• Singular nouns without the ‫ ] ָ [ה‬or ‫ ת‬endings are masculine, unless f. is specified (e.g. no. 2).
• Plural ending ‫ ] ִ [י‬indicates the masculine, unless f. is specified (e.g. no. 2).
• Plural ending ‫ ] [
ת‬indicates the feminine, unless m. is specified (e.g. no. 49).
• Vowels [ ] and ֹ [ ] , [ ] and [ ] may interchange in the Biblical text your are reading (e.g. no. 83: ‫)עָֹלה=ע
ָלה‬.
