IU Horn Large Ensemble Placement Audition List
Fall 2017
The Large Ensemble Placement Audition will take place on Wednesday, August 23,
10:00am-4:30pm in room TBA. The other room TBA will be available as a green room. If you
plan on playing with a large ensemble, you must have an audition. Your performance will consist
of the exposition of the first movement of R. Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 (with only 2 bars of rest
after the opening fanfare) or F. Strauss Horn Concerto op. 8, selections from the list of excerpts
below, and a sight-reading passage to be transposed in either E, Eb, or D. The transposition key
will be selected from those three options on the day of the audition by the horn faculty.

Additional Notes
For the excerpt from Brahms Symphony 4, the horn faculty will specify which bracketed parts should
be played on the day of the audition. Please be prepared to play the bracketed sections separately or one
after the other with a short pause. For the Mahler Symphony 5 excerpt, please count only one bar of rest
instead of the printed 5. For the excerpt from Wagner’s Götterdämerung, be careful to play the bottom
part, which is the Horn II part.
