This beloved American folk lullaby incorporates the
repeated word “hush-a-bye” throughout the arrangement, creating a sweet and calming effect as the
Jeffrey Douma melody weaves in and out between the different vocal
lines. Simple and straightforward, the setting imparts a quiet note of sadness

David L. Brunner
Boosey & Hawkes
This David Brunner work evolved from a project that
involved middle, high school and college singers in
a virtual choir environment. The text, with its strong
rhythm and sturdy refrain, artfully captures what it
feels like to be a singer in a chorus, while the choral
texture moves from unison to parts, from a single
voice to many. The entire work is an anthem to bands of empowered singers
everywhere: “From many, comes one song!”

Jenni Brandon
Boosey & Hawkes
Composed in a set of three pieces, the poetry in this
piece comes from James Joyce’s collection Chamber
Music. The music beautifully portrays the imagery of
lovers wandering along a river, the essence of a cool
valley, and the falling rain. Combined they leave the
listener with the sense of a quiet, hushed world full of
love and longing as they are led into a dazzling world heavy with memories.

Solitude Trilogy
Tarik O’Regan
Novello & Company
Solitude Trilogy takes for its title that of a series
of three radio documentaries made by Canadian
pianist Glenn Gould for the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation between 1967 and 1977 (The Idea of
North, The Latecomers & The Quiet in the Land).
This work, which sets the poems (two by William
Tarik O’Regan
Butler Yeats and one by Edward Thomas) in three
movements, echoes Gould’s fascination with the ambiguity of withdrawal. In
each text, it is a bird which stands for the character of isolations. The strings,
harp, solo singers and chorus provide a gently contrapuntal commentary on
Gould’s vision throughout the piece.

Commissioned by the Genesis Foundation, for The Sixteen and Harry

sound “ah,” the altos and sopranos add soft, almost whispered interjections.
Then a radiant soprano line beams out above, gradually building over closeknit chords to a joyous climax. The opening calm returns, but the upper
voices still, the lower voices punctuating. Finally the female voices are left
holding on, fading away, till the sopranos edge up to a momentary last D.

Mixed Voices – Sacred
Same Train
Mark Adamo
G. Schirmer, Inc.
Composed for Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare,
the composer writes: Same Train, in many arrangements seems to sing of good news coming. But –
maybe it was the relentlessness, the conclusiveness
of the title phrase – I wondered if what was coming
might actually have been a funeral train: coming for
Mark Adamo
“our sister, our mother,” and...soon enough for us,
too. I thought of so many other spirituals which sing about dark truths in
bright music, and wondered if I couldn’t use the imitative, “ch-ch-train”
ostinato to honor that willfully smiling aspect of the piece, while also freeing
the harmonies to make audible the more disconsolate feelings underneath.

Novello Handel Edition
Novello & Company
This latest addition to the Novello Handel Edition
is the first complete, modern edition of the composer’s longest oratorio, prepared after examination of all known contemporary sources, both
music and word-books. The publication embodies
the complete text known to have been performed
at the Covent Garden premiere in 1743, as well as identifying the later shorter versions and additions performed regularly by Handel, and an Appendix
of all further variants created by him and performed during his lifetime. It is
thus a comprehensive and flexible edition for between four and eight soloists, with an abundance of choral writing and some of Handel’s most sublime
writing for voices.

Raw power characterizes the opening of this festival
anthem from the Cathedral Series. Massive chords
sweep forward bringing in fanfare-like choral acclamations of praise. Use of a solo reed adds shine, and the
martial like theme is a confident call to worship and
invitation to prepare the way of the Lord with praise.
The church was made for song, and the middle contrasting section celebrates this legacy of praise by increasing intensity until
breaking forth with jubilant alleluias. A final canon caps this majestic offering!

Visconti. He also composed the music for two of Franco Zeffirelli’s

Craig Hella Johnson Choral Series
Craig Hella Johnson
G. Schirmer, Inc.
Commissioned by the Texas Choral Director’s
Association, this work for men’s voices to a text
by Michael Dennis Browne expresses the fresh and
vibrant sense of the journey of being a man in the
modern world, and especially a young man in a beautiful and volatile world. Opening with a declamatory
text over rhythmic motives in the piano, the work builds and unfolds in
waves of sound to the final phrase, “we are all sons singing.”

Yo le Canto Todo el Dia
CME In Low Voice
David L. Brunner
Boosey & Hawkes
Infectious rhythms and playful melodies characterize this setting of an original Spanish text. Already a hit with Mixed and 2-Part treble choirs, this new
voicing for men’s voices is long overdue and will be a welcome addition to
the men’s choir repertoire.

You’ll Be in My Heart
from Tarzan
arr. Mac Huff
Hal Leonard Corporation
The classic ballad from Tarzan by Phil Collins in a remarkable setting for
more advanced choirs! Opening as a gentle lullaby, the vocal lines build into
an expansive concert work with fully voiced choral harmonies and sweeping
piano arpeggios. The arrangement builds through several exciting modulations before returning to the gentle strains of the opening.

A Film by Michael Stillwater
A Song Without Borders Production
Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen, the first episode of the Song
Without Borders series, In Search of The Great Song, is also the first documentary about the

recipient, named an “American Choral Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts,
Lauridsen has achieved the status of the most frequently performed modern choral composer.
Featuring his music performed by vocal groups in America and Europe, the film gives
the viewer a rare glimpse of his life and inspiration, derived from spending time in solitude in
nature. Filmed in Los Angeles; San Francisco; Waldron Island, Washington; and Aberdeen,
