As our school finalist and first place winner at the District Spelling Bee in Roanoke, Derick represented our school once again on Saturday, March 23, as he participated in the Regional Spelling Bee Spell-Off. Derick finished 5th over all out of 66 spellers and is the first alternate should one of the 1st-4th place spellers not be able to attend the National Spelling Bee in Texas in June. The team played hard and ended its long losing streak. “David Turner pitched three strong innings to pick up the win, giving up only one hit, striking out 7 and walking none. The Crusaders pounded out 14 hits, with Michael Hinson leading the charge, going 4-5 with 4 RBI, in- cluding a 2-run double. Turner helped himself out with a 3-4 night, while Ben Misantone added 2 hits and plated 5 runs. Zack Snyder added to the hit parade with a triple in the third inning. Zack Swearingen promptly drove him home with a 2 RBI double.” Special thanks to Mr. Mike Misantone for providing this article. Part I; On the go seems to be a common theme for many families these days and grabbing supper in a sack seems to be the only option. You don’t have to feel guilty about making that choice if you consider these helpful health tips while eating out. 1. 2. 3. cheese. Before you eat, grab a few paper napkins and blot the excess oil off your pizza. This saves you a few grams of fat right off the bat. 4. Chicken Night: Choose grilled chicken or chicken salad instead of a fried chicken sandwich. If you’re going for fast food, skip the order of fries and order low-fat or fat-free milk (instead of soda) for the kids. Mexican Foods: Get vegetarian refried or plain black beans. Opt for soft tortillas (such as a burrito) instead of fried taco shells. Replace the cheese or sour cream with salsa or guacamole. Italian Foods: Try to avoid creamy sauces and pesto on pasta that can add a lot of fat and calories. Instead, try a marinara sauce, pasta primavera or a clam sauce. Consider sharing a pasta entrée and a salad with someone else. Coming soon, the SGA will be sponsoring a Health Awareness Day. More information to follow. Special thanks to the American Heart Association for the tips. Pizza: Opt for a thin crust and double the vegetables instead of doubling the Spring Break. Ya...hoo… Spring Break Time! April 8-12 No School; Enjoy family time together! Testing Next Week. Next week students (Kindergarten—11th) will be taking the Terra Nova Achievement Tests. Testing is scheduled Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. ♦ ♦ Testing time begins at 8:25 sharp! Please be aware that if your child arrives late, there will be no guarantee to make missed sections! Dismissal is at 11:30 on these 3 days and no lunches will be served. How can you help your student “test well”? Here are some pointers: ♦ Get plenty of rest the night before. Earlier bedtimes mean students are more likely to have better alert minds. ♦ Getting a full breakfast. Don’t miss out on this one in the morning rush. Students who have eaten a full breakfast have statistically tested well. If your child’s class will have a bathroom/snack/ break time, sending a healthy snack such as apples, pretzels, grapes, cheese...etc., would all be excellent choices to boost brain power. Pray and encourage. Some students are not test “takers” and may feel anxiety/stress/pressure of taking tests. Pray with them and encourage to do their best. Let them know that while achievement tests are important their effort and grades throughout the year are just as important! Tests will be sent off for scoring and parents will be notified when the school receives the final scores.
