Step One: Listen to the Word What one word or thought in this reading really strikes you? What image from this reading lingers for you now in your memory? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: What does God want you to do? To forgive? Be generous? To love? Question for Youth: As you grow, how do you know what God wants you to do? How do you hear the voice of God saying, "you are one of mine, of my chosen?" Question for Adults: Today's readings lead to a core question: As you follow God and do what he wants, how do you experience his loving words: "You are my own. My favor is upon you."? Good Resources of the Week: For more reflections of the Liturgy of the Word visit: http://liturgy.slu.edu/ and http://church.st-thomasmore.org/q_of_week and Good Resources of the Week: http://lifelongcatechesis.osv.com/ Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The Shepherds needed the Christmas Angel’s assurance and direction to discover Christ. The Magi needed a star to guide them and some directions along the way. Herod never found or recognized him as a savior. He feared him as a threat to his power and authority. What will it take for us to recognize Christ, to come to him, to adore him, to be transformed by him, and to go forth to tell the world about him? Today, seeking Christ is not a matter of a long caravan ride chasing a star, or a stumbling stroll through a sheep strewn mountainous field. Seeking Christ is a matter of recognition and acceptance. He is not far from us. The message of Christmas is that God has chosen to be with us. Ultimately we do not find our way to Christ. He has found his way to us and waits for us to recognize, worship, and proclaim him. This is not a once in a lifetime experience; it is a lifetime experience. The dynamics of the search for Christ in the Christmas story are the dynamics of missionary discipleship and evangelization. To be missionary disciples we must first discover Christ, recognize him as our savior, adore and worship him, accept his transforming love, mercy, and grace, and go forth to tell others about him so that they can discover him and become his missionary disciples with us. These dynamics are the core elements of our parish life and ministry. Our various faith formation opportunities and spiritual programs have one goal to help us recognize Christ. Our sacramental celebrations and spiritual exercises honor, adore, and worship Christ’s presence in our midst. Through these experiences of God’s Word and his grace Christ transforms our lives so that we can recognize his presence and share it with others through the witness of our lives. Our care for one another and our service to others through our community outreach programs bear powerful witness that helps others recognize Christ in their lives and follow him with us. In this New Year we will be using the dynamics of missionary discipleship and evangelization to guide our decisions regarding the direction of our parish life and ministry, and how we can best proclaim and witness to Christ within our parish boundaries and beyond. I invite you to pray and reflect about how you will discover, worship, and proclaim Christ within our parish ministry as we move into the future. Remember the message of Christmas: Christ is with you waiting for you to recognize him and proclaim him to the world. Luke tells us that the Magi went home by another route. They were changed by the Redeemer and brought that difference to their world. What difference does Christ call you and Our Lady of the Fields to bring to our world? Next week our second collection will be for the special care of our retired archdiocesan priests who helped people discover Christ in their lives through their service in the many parishes of our archdiocese. Many of these men continue to provide sacramental assistance throughout our archdiocese and some can no longer provide this marvelous service. All of them, like our pastor emeritus, Msgr. John Auer, saw and served Christ in others through their priestly ministry. Through our generous support of this collection we can serve Christ in them. May God’s Peace be Yours, Msgr.
