WINTER 2015 A WHEELY HAPPY DAY HOSPICE PATIENT! a car and allow me to be independent, so now there is no pressure on anybody else to look after me.” Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC) not only raises funds each year towards vital Hospice services, but also helps to support patients with specialist equipment –those ‘special extras’ which make Hospice care so special. Phil would not have been able to afford the mobility scooter without FNHC’s support. Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful supporters, we have been able to make a huge difference to Phil and his family’s quality of life. The Charity has been able to provide Day Hospice patient, Phil Dear, with a much-needed mobility scooter to help him get around. “The scooter has opened up a lot of opportunities for me. Travelling any further than 10 or 20 yards would mean I would have to use a wheelchair. But with the scooter, it means I can go out and about, as it is small enough to fit in the back of “I really want to thank the Hospice Charity for helping me out with getting the scooter, it means a lot to me and my family and we are all very grateful.” DON’T FORGET TO SEND IN YOUR CHRISTMAS DRAW TICKETS! We hope to provide a tranquil setting whilst ensuring links to the Hospice are evident throughout the service. Trees will be lit at both Walton Street and outside Florence Nightingale Hospice to shine throughout the festive season and into New Year. The traditional service of remembrance will be led by Hospice Chaplin Carole Hough, and will include festival carols, music provided by the Leighton Buzzard Salvation Army Band and an opportunity to reflect and remember loved ones. Warm mince pies will also be available after the service. You are invited to sponsor a shining light to honour someone special and to place a dedication in our Book of Honour, which will be available to view on the night. Every light sponsored will receive a personal card of acknowledgment and invitation to the service. As in previous years we are also pleased to invite you to St Laurence’s Church, Winslow, on Sunday 13th Dec, 4.00pm, for a second chance to join us during the festive period in a service of carols, readings and prayers. For more information please see the enclosed Tree of Light leaflet or call our Fundraising Team on 01296 429975. A special online dedication can be added at any time during November and December to our Virtual Tree at www.fnhospice.org.uk - an easy way to instantly share your dedication and memories with family and friends. *Please note a card will not be issued for these dedications but you are very welcome to join us at either service. “IF THIS SERVICE HADN’T BEEN AVAILABLE, I DON’T THINK I’D HAVE BEEN HERE” Annie Leigh, who has been a Day Hospice patient for over three years, found that coming to the Hospice ‘saved her’: “When I first started coming to the Hospice, I was depressed because of my illness – it’s a lifelimiting illness, so it’s taken a long time for me to get my head around it. The staff have been fantastic – they’re there all the time and you can talk to them about anything.” She added: “If this service hadn’t been available, I don’t think I’d have been here. I really think I’d just have gone deeper into my shell and I would have never come to terms with my illness. It’s really helped me get my confidence back.” “I’d say to say a big thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the staff and volunteers who have supported me over the last few years, You’ve all been fantastic and helped me more than you can imagine.” Thanks to the generous support from our lottery players, the money raised from last year’s two Superdraws was added to that raised from our weekly lottery, enabling us to contribute £182,000 to FNHC in 2014-15. This is the equivalent to funding 1,516 home visits by the Florrie’s Children’s Team, who provide support for sick children and their families. Day Hospice is fully funded by FNHC at a cost of over £100,000 a year. Each patient appointment costs approximately £134 per visit. Our volunteer drivers bring our patients to and from Day Hospice so they can receive the support they need. Mileage costs of around £16k per year are also funded by the Charity. Tickets for our Christmas Superdraw are now available and there are some great prizes on offer including a top prize of £5,000. If you want to be in with a chance of winning, tickets can be purchased via www. hospicelottery.org.uk/ superdraw or by calling 01442 891459. Thank you to all of our lottery supporters, you really do make a valuable difference. Nikki Golding, HLP SUPPORTING TRAINING AND EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE FNHC’s Education Suite at Walton Lodge, Aylesbury, is primarily used for palliative care training, and as a meeting facility for healthcare professionals, including hospice staff. It is also available to hire, at a competitive rate from Monday-Friday, 9.00am4.30pm, for local organisations and small groups, who perhaps don’t have enough space to hold meetings and seminars. Matron Jane Naismith believes the Hospice has a role to play in providing high quality training to a wide range of healthcare professionals to support them in providing evidence- based palliative and end of life care to their patients: “With this facility provided at the Education Suite we are able to offer a wider range of training opportunities. These include undergraduate and master’s degree modules, communication skills training and palliative care updates for both qualified and unqualified staff.” The Education Suite is a large venue (capacity seating 60 guests), with a number of car parking spaces for facilitators and nearby access to Aylesbury town centre car parks for delegates. It also houses a small kitchen with tea and coffee facilities. She also helps out at some of our fundraising events. We caught up with Kirsty to find out why she supports FNHC. How long have you volunteered? I have volunteered in the Hospice shop in Wendover for two years in September, and one year in the Hospice. FUN AT ANNUAL VOLUNTEER THANK YOU PARTY Our volunteers enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea, overlooking views of Aylesbury Vale at Ellesborough Golf Club. The tea was served by Hospice Matron Jane Naismith, Angie Pestka – The Florrie’s Children’s Team Leader and Dr Helen Pegrum, along with Charity staff. We were also pleased that Alison, Countess of Buckinghamshire DL, was able to join us to present some well-deserved volunteers with long service awards, spanning from 5 to 30 years’ service! MIX96 CONTINUE TO SUPPORT FLORRIE’S CHARITY OF THE YEAR PARTNERSHIP From Florrie’s Superhero, to a two-day Radiothon and Christmas Toy Appeal – Mix96 is continuing to help support and raise awareness of Florrie’s Children’s Team through our Charity partnership. On behalf of us all here at Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity, we would like to say a very big THANK YOU to the entire team. Find out more via www.mix96.co.uk Why do you volunteer? I volunteer primarily because I want to be able to make a difference to patients and their families. Moreover I want to study biomedical science at university. What are your main responsibilities at the Hospice and Wendover shop? Answering the phone and showing relatives to the patients’ rooms. A further key responsibility is talking to patients and their relatives, and making them a drink. My main responsibility in the Wendover shop is operating the till, which in turn also enables me to talk to customers. I also price items and put them on the shop floor. What do you like most about volunteering? I particularly enjoy sitting and talking to patients in the Hospice and customers in the shop. We often talk about topics totally unrelated to their illnesses: the patients’ families or the colour of our nails. In the shop I enjoy meeting new people (both customers and fellow volunteers) the most. HOSPICE GARDENS ARE AN AYLESBURY BLOOM-ING BEAUTY! We were delighted to be visited by the Aylesbury in Bloom judges in August, and in recognition of the fantastic work of our volunteer gardeners, we were chosen as the Best Communal Garden 2015! Our hospice gardeners do a wonderful job to make the gardens a sanctuary for our patients and their families. Well done all!
