Summary
Seymour Krelborn, the assistant at Mushnik's Flower Shop in downtrodden
Skid Row, becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers a strange and
exotic plant. He names it Audrey Two in order to impress glamorous Audrey,
the colleague he’s secretly in love with.
Audrey Two quickly starts to wilt, putting Seymour’s job and dream future with
Audrey at risk. Accidentally pricking his finger, Seymour discovers that Audrey
Two needs a little more than plant food to thrive. The plant grows into a badtempered, foul-mouthed carnivore whose voracious appetite becomes
increasingly difficult to satisfy. How far will Seymour go for the woman of his
dreams?
Rhydian
Rhydian will play sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello. Rhydian rose to fame as a
runaway success on ITV’s X Factor. Since then he has sold in excess of a million
albums worldwide, released 6 albums and has performed with some of the
biggest names in the music industry. His many theatre credits include Grease,
We Will Rock You, The War of the Worlds, Jesus Christ Superstar and the 40th
Anniversary Tour of The Rocky Horror Show. Rhydian has just completed his
third solo UK tour and is a Classical Brit Award nominee.
Production and Process
The Creative and Producing team of Little Shop of Horrors first met around
four months ago to get the ball rolling on the logistical and aesthetic
undertaking that is a UK Tour. After several meetings, designs were drawn and
a model box was created to see how the show might look on stage. Several
elements were discussed, such as colour schemes, comedy world vs. real life,
era, style and theme.
Director Tara Wilkinson and Designer David Shields found their vision in a clash
between the cartoon elements of the story and the real, relatable characters in
the script. Opting for an authentic 60s style costume palette, against a purple,
quirky, angled set.
This was followed by a casting process in which the actors were asked to
prepare a song of their choice. After the first audition and a recall, the cast
were selected and rehearsals began.
Tara insisted on the first day being a meet and greet followed by a singing call
where the cast began to learn the musical numbers and harmony lines. They
did not do a script read through until day two when the cast were better
acquainted. The cast rehearsed for 3 weeks in a friendly environment and the
process was slick and professional. A short technical process began in
Bournemouth, where the show opened, and the set, costumes, producers, cast
and creatives all came together to prepare for opening night.
Characters
Seymour Krelborn:
A menial labourer at Mushnik’s Flower Shop, Seymour Krelborn is the
improbable hero of the story. Nebbish-like and insecure, he is naive and always
feels put-upon. In spite of his flaws, he’s a sweet and well-meaning little man.
Seymour is the owner of the carnivorous plant, Audrey II.
Audrey:
The gum-snapping, bleached-blond secret love of Seymour’s life, Audrey works
with Seymour at the flower shop. Lacking in education and self-esteem, she
suffers from feelings of hopelessness at her situation in life, including her
abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Orin Scrivello. Seymour names his
plant after her.
Mr. Mushnik:
Owner of Mushnik’s Flower Shop, a failing business on Skid Row, Mr. Mushnik
is given to cursing in Yiddish. He is a man who seldom smiles and often yells.
Orin Scrivello:
Audrey’s dentist boyfriend, Orin Scrivello is a motorcycle-riding black leather
jacket-wearing tough-guy. He is tall, handsome and sadistic. His fondness for
his own nitrous oxide proves to be his undoing.
Audrey II:
A wise-cracking anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an
avocado with teeth, Audrey II is Seymour’s favourite and soon-famous plant.
Seymour purchased the plant at Chang’s Flower Shop during a mysterious total
eclipse of the sun; but once the plant has the taste of human blood there is no
stopping it.
Crystal, Ronette, and Chiffon:
Three female street urchins who function as participants in the action and as
“doo-wop” chorus girls outside it. Crystal, Ronette, and Chiffon often sing
directly to the audience in a hip, narrative style.
Patrick Martin:
A sleazy opportunist, Patrick Martin tries to talk Seymour and Mr. Mushnik into
leaf cuttings of Audrey II.
Bernstein:
An uptown bigshot from NBC, Bernstein offers Seymour his own gardening
show.
Mrs. Luce:
The wife of the editor of Life magazine
