www.ccasta.org February 26, 2017 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time This weekend Jesus challenges us to ask, “Who do we really serve?” When our lives are dominated by worrying about money and possessions, that pretty much answers the question of who our real master is. In our modern materialistic culture, this is a challenging Gospel. Instead of worrying about amassing wealth and stuff, we as believers, are called to place our trust in God alone, our true master. As Jesus reminds us in the Gospel, we cannot serve two masters. Where our energy, effort, and ambition go is where our hearts really are. Does God honestly get the same ambition, energy, and effort as we put into amassing more things? If what we worry about is money, our clothes, cars, and keeping up with what the Jones’ have, then our hearts belong to the world and the Lord is not our real master. -Fr. Humbled by God’s mercy, we seek to follow Christ and live the joy of the Gospel through love and service.—Mission Statement Liturgical Calendar March 1st Ash Wednesday March 3rd St. Katherine Drexel-Virgin March 4th St. Casimir Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament St Augustine Friday, Mar. 3 12 PM-7 PM Ascension Note: Will be held at St Augustine Church Monday, Mar. 20 12 PM –7 PM Our Monthly Parish Prayer Intention: For all those who are sick and suffering in any way. Prayer is essential to becoming a missiondriven active parish, so please pray with us! Pope Francis Reminds Us "The security that God loves us even at our worst gives us hope. We must tell ourselves each day, 'God loves me'." LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at Easter. FASTING is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken to meet one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday are days of abstinence. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, other suitable forms of self-denial are encouraged. Ascension Renovations There has been a change in our renovation plans. It was going to cost us $31,000 to replace the carpeting and put vinyl tile under the pews, which would probably need to be replaced every 15 years or so. This also would do nothing for the vestibule. For $51,000 we are going to have our entire church, including the vestibule, done in porcelain tile, which will never wear out. After consulting with the AOB and parish leadership, I think this makes financial sense and it will be much easier to maintain and will not show wear. So as to only pay to have the pews moved once, we have moved weekend Masses to Brewer hall for about 4 weeks. Beginning Feb 11/12th through March 4/5th —all weekend Masses will be in Brewer Hall. I know this is not ideal but it does save us thousands in costs. To reserve the spots on the school lot closest to Brewer Hall for the elderly and those who have trouble walking, I ask that you please park on the church lot and walk over to the Hall. I ask your patience in this unexpected change but this helps towards getting us back into the church sooner. Pastoral Care Ministry/ Communion to the Sick The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “the works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities.” The Corporal & Spiritual Works of Mercy are actions we can perform that extend God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. At St. Augustine’s, we presently have 16 trained Pastoral Care Ministers but only 5 parishioners are being taken communion on a regular basis. We feel there could be many more out there. One of the Corporal Works of Mercy tells us to “visit the sick” and one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy reminds us to “console and comfort.” Bringing communion to the sick, shut-ins or anyone who is recovering from surgery is one way we can show God’s love and mercy and one of the ways we as a parish can connect those who cannot attend Mass with us. If you or someone you know has such a need, please let us know. For St. Augustine’s, contact either Marty Byerly at 410-242-2743 or Tom Devlin at 410-379-6052.
