Theme- Birds
In Multiplication , the number to be multiplied is called the Multiplicant, the number by
which we multiply is called the Multiplier and the result of multiplication is called the
Product.
Eg
2 6 =12
2 is the multiplicant
6 is the multiplier and
12 is the product.
1. Multiplication is repeated addition
Look at the picture. There are 3 groups of 2 mangoes.
There are 2+2+2=6 mangoes in all.
2 taken 3 times make 6
2X3 =6 is a multiplication fact.
For each multiplication fact, there is a corresponding addition fact.
2. Properties of Multiplication
1. When a number is multiplied by 1 the product is the number itself
Eg:
8 1=8
10 1 = 10
2.When a number is multiplied by 0 the product is always Zero.
35 0 = 0
4 0=0
3.Two numbers multiplied in any order give the same product.
Eg:
6 3=18 and 3 6 = 18
3 6 =6 3
3. Multiplication by Ten (10)
To multiply by ten write one zero (0) to the right of that number.

CHAPTER 12 - MEASUREMENT
MEASUREMENT OF LENGTH
Length of objects tells us how long it is. Measurement of length helps us to find the
length of objects like a rope , height of person and distance between two places etc.
Measures of length
We measures length and distance in millimetre, centimetre, decimetre
metre and kilometre.
a)
Millimetre
We denote millimetre by “mm”. It is the smallest unit of length and is used to measure
the width of an eraser, length of finger nails etc
10milimetre = 1 centimetre
b)
Centimetre
We denote centimetre by “ cm” . It is the smaller unit of length and is used to measure the
length of a crayon, length of a line segment etc
100 cm = 1 m
c)
Decimeter
We denote decimeter by “dm”. It is the smaller unit of length and
is used to measure the width of your hand.
1 m = 10 dm
c ) Metre
We denote metre by “ m “. It is the standard unit of length. Length of a wall, a cloth
etc. are measured in metres.
1 m = 100 cm
d ) Kilometre :
We denote it is by “ km “. It is a bigger unit of length and is used to measure the
distance between two places or cities .
1000 m = 1 km
Devices used for measuring length
To measure length in metres and centimetres , we use a metre rod , ruler and measuring
tape.
Relation between units of length
1 metre ( m )
