Research Assistant/Paid Internship: TADAMUN: The Cairo Urban
Solidarity Initiative
Description:
TADAMUN: The Cairo Urban Solidarity Initiative (www.tadamun.info) is seeking a dynamic,
creative, enthusiastic, and productive research assistant to write policy briefs and conduct research
on urbanism, local politics, social justice, urban policy, the built environment, and urban
development in Cairo and Egypt. He or she will work under the supervision of the Co-Director and
Research Associate of TADAMUN: The Cairo Urban Solidarity Initiative, located at American
University’sSchoolof Public Affairs, in Washington, DC. We are searching for someone who is both
fluent in Arabic and who has excellent English writing and research skills. The research assistant
will also provide support for TADAMUN programming, including the preparation of materials or
research for conferences, workshops, and other activities. Arabic fluency is required to conduct
research in Arabic and to collaborate with our larger team in Egypt.
Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’sDegree
Master’s or PhD Candidates preferred
Academic specialization and/or professional experience in urban politics, urban planning,
housing issues, local governance, international development, political science, or political
economy within the Middle Eastern or Egyptian context.
Minimum Requirements:
Demonstrated ability to write and edit policy briefs clearly and concisely
Excellent time management skills, self-discipline, and ability to work as part of a small team
Classical Arabic fluency (reading and writing skills), Egyptian dialect preferred
Preferred Requirements:
Social media and communication skills
Knowledge of ArcGIS appreciated
Additional Information:
This is a temporary summer position based at American University in Washington, D.Cfrom May
until late August . (approx. 30 hours per week) with a possibility for continued part-time
