It is a day when we reflect upon the meaning and purpose of Catholic schooling and of our school, St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly. We believe that our faith gives strength and purpose to what we do here and it is this purpose that gives strength to our students. Part of the day was centred on a reflection which we can share together to consider what the true meaning of education is: Principal’s Report Assistant Principal’s Report Bursar’s Report College Noticeboard Careers Corner College Links Languages Report The Path of Life ‘You shall who me the path to life, the fullness of joy in your presence…’ Psalm 16 Host Family Appeal Youth Ministry Report Social Justice Event Sport Report The path of life is a sinuous system. We want it to be straight and clear. It very seldom is. It is something that unfolds a little at a time while we’re living it. We talk about ‘planning it’ and ‘finding it’ but life is much more often discovered in hindsight than it is in vision. More often than not, we do not find life, it finds us. The only question is whether or not we recognise it and accept it when it comes, whether or not we bring meaning to it and take meaning from it as it is. Liturgy St Paul’s in the Press P&F Update Important Information Community News Psychologists talk a great talk a great deal these days about ‘alienation’, that feeling of being out of touch with the self, of not knowing exactly what we’re about in life or how we feel about it or what thinks mean to us as we race always from one place to the next looking for what we want but cannot identify. Social analysts say that alienation began to mark us as a people when the assembly line began to take the place of craft. People bolted steel frames or sorted peaches or cut pants pockets all their lives but never felt the exhilarating sense of creativity that comes with ‘building a car’, or ‘growing an orchard’, or ‘designing a suit of clothes.’ Clearly, it all comes down to finding ‘the fullness of joy in God’s presence.’ Maybe alienation is the sign that we are not a secular culture after all. Maybe, in fact, we are a very spiritual one suffering from the fact that we have been cut adrift of all the props and left to find for ourselves the things that really count in life. It comes from what we are. If we are lovers of beauty, then beauty will fill us all our days. If we are committed to justice, then justice will drive us past all fatigue and failure. If we are devoted to building human community, then we will find meaning in the people whose lives we touch. It’s when we are driven by nothing other than the daily schedules that life becomes grey, listless and dour. Life happens quickly but the meaning of it comes into focus only slowly, slowly, slowly. The challenge is to keep on asking ourselves what it is. Achievement is what we do for ourselves. Meaning comes out of what we do for others. It is these ideas that shape the culture of our College. A culture that can be summed up in the words of St Paul: “Suffering produces endurances, and endurance produces character.” Romans 5:3 “Love is patient.” 1 Cor. 13:4 Mr Mark Baker Principal Freshwater Community Bank is the proud Community Sponsor for St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly Page 2 © St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly Assistant Principal’s Report Dear Parents, We were blessed with beautiful weather yesterday to hold our Athletics Carnival. The carnival was well attended and participation high, a great day was had by all. Many thanks to our Sports Coordinator Ms Stuart, to all the teachers who worked throughout the day to make it so rewarding, and to the students who participated with enthusiasm. Carnivals are days of social gatherings of students and those students who are not interested athletically can always participate in the cheering and general fun day. However it is always disappointing to see that some students do not value attending these days and that parents approve their non-attendance. Students only get as much out of school as they put in and for the minority who stayed away from the Carnival, missed out on the community spirit and friendship that makes us who we are. Over the last two weeks many of you completed the survey from MMG about the College. This survey is being used to gather data for the College review in Term 3. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the members of the community who gave of their time completing the survey. The P&F have also issued a short survey asking parents their thoughts on the uniform; this data has also started to filter through and many thanks to the parents who completed it. At this week’s College assembly students were asked to donate to Vinnie’s Winter Clothing Appeal. All boys were issued with a bag and asked that they go through their clothing and donate any unwanted, wearable items. These bags need to be returned next week to the College and left at the Edmund Rice Cottage. Year 10 Formal “Dear parents, it is official, there will not be a Year 10 formal for St Paul’s this year. Traditionally the Year 10 formal was held to signify the end of formal education for a major portion of students. However, as the legal requirements for education have changed, and with the discontinuation of the school certificate as well as the increasing incidence of inappropriate behaviour at these events we no longer feel that this is a necessary celebration. Mrs Jackson is in the process of organising an alternative celebration and welcomes suggestions on it. If you have any questions they can be brought up on Monday night at the Year 11 2014 Subject Information Evening.” Ms Jaimee Jackson Year 11 2014 Subject Information Evening At Dee Why RSL on Monday 17 June from 7pm we will present the Year 11 2014 subject selection choices for our current Year 10 students and their parents. They also have a listening test at the end of this term (after the Half Yearly exam period) and should be using Language Perfect to prepare for this. The hiragana portfolio requires them to pass 6 levels to achieve full marks and make it into the exclusive Hyakuten Club. Last newsletter we congratulated Mitchell Ranken who has now completed all 11 levels. This newsletter we congratulate Dante Cox who has also passed this milestone. These boys have now begun the Extension program called Kanji Master and are working towards passing the Kanji Master exam. We will keep you informed of their progress. We also welcome to the Hyakuten Club for Term 2 the following boys from 8V who did a fantastic job on their recent Hiragana portfolio : Adam Blasini, Harrison Burns, Austin Devaney, Mathis Guichon and Michael O’Neil. Enjoy your front seats at the upcoming Taiko Drum workshop later this term! Host a Japanese student Every two years, students from St Paul’s are welcomed into the homes of our Japanese sister school, Waseda. They do this despite often living in quite small apartments compared to Sydney families and having busy long workdays. Our students have benefited from this exchange program for the last four years and all have described the importance of staying with a Japanese family to truly understand the language and culture they have been studying at school. Many have made lasting friendships and have continued to exchange soccer jerseys and other mementos long after the homestay. We are looking now for seven of our families in the St Paul’s community to offer the same warmth to the Japanese students on their return visit. They will attend school every day at St Paul’s and are keen to participate in your family’s regular daily and weekend activities. A fee is also paid on the first day the student arrives to cover expenses during the visit. The experience can allow hosting families to learn a little about a culture that they may otherwise remain foreign to them. All students are studying English and do not expect the families to understand Japanese; however, if a problem does arise with language, St Paul’s and Waseda staff are able to assist. This is usually not necessary though due to the electronic translators that all students from Japan bring with them. The exchange is from Sunday 28 July to Thursday 8 August. Australian Catholic Youth Festival The Australian Catholic Youth Festival is a national gathering of Catholic young people established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. It exists to provide young people with opportunities to deepen their relationship with Jesus, be empowered to be disciples in the world today and encounter and celebrate the vitality of the Church in Australia. St Paul’s will be taking a group of Year 10 students to the festival. Applications to join the festival will be available early in Term 3. The Australian Catholic Youth Festival has taken a scriptural verse as its theme - ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me’ Luke 4:18. This theme echoes the Australian Bishops’ vision for youth and youth ministry in Australia. STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR JUNE: How Much Time Should You Spend on Schoolwork? In previous tips we have covered the concept of independent learning. In secondary school if you do not have any specific homework or assessments to work on, you are then expected to spend some time that night on independent learning. This is where you ask yourself, what else COULD I be doing that will help me understand my subjects better and improve my results? Examples of independent learning are: reading ahead in your textbook, making a mind map about what you have been learning, doing extra research on a topic that interests you, making study notes, reviewing work you find difficult… the list is limitless! However schools do not expect students to spend ALL of their time on schoolwork! We want you to play sport, see your friends, spend time with family, do activities you enjoy and have some rest and relax time as well. If you work effectively, then you can do your work for school, but still have a life! So given this, how much time are you expected to spend on schoolwork? It depends on your year level, your school, your parents and your own abilities and goals. First, check your school diary or ask your teacher what is expected at your school. Then discuss these outlines with your parents and see if you can both agree what is right for you. As a general rule, expected time to spend on schoolwork at home: JUNIOR YEARS: In the first years of high school students usually do at least half an hour to an hour each day. In many schools it is around 1-1.5 hours on average or 7-10 hours over the whole week. MIDDLE YEARS: In the middle years of high school it should be at least an hour. In many schools the average is around 1.5-2 hours or 10-14 hours over the whole week. SENIOR YEARS: In the final years of high school students do at least 1.5-2 hours a day and this will increase as students approach the end of their schooling. Most Year 11 students do 2-3 hours per day (14-21 hours over the whole week) and in Year 12 around 3-4 hours (21-28 hours over the whole week). Remember this is just a guide. Some parents and some schools will expect more (or less!) so treat these as guidelines. FAQ 1: What about the weekend? The amount of time students need to spend on schoolwork on the weekend will depend on their current workload. Most students will need to spend at least the same amount on the weekend on schoolwork as they do during a weeknight. At the same time, it is important not to overdo it! You do need relaxation and time to yourself. It is important to spend time with family and friends and doing things you really enjoy. You also need to ensure you are getting enough sleep. Freshwater Community Bank is the proud Community Sponsor for St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly Page 12 © St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly Study Skills (continued) STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR JUNE: How Much Time Should You Spend on Schoolwork? (cont) FAQ 2: What is a fair and realistic amount of time each week to spend on your personal activities? There is no easy answer. It depends on how well you use your spare time. A student might have absolutely no other activities and oodles of spare time but still do less than half an hour a night of schoolwork. Another student might have huge amounts of extra-curricular activities but manage their time well and easily do 1.5 hours of homework and work for school a day. In fact, if you have lots of time spare you are often less productive in that time. But if you are busy in your life it forces you to be more productive in the time that is available. FAQ 3: What about going out? How does that fit in with time management? There is nothing wrong with going out Saturday nights with friends if it is OK with your parents provided that you do some work on Saturday morning or Sunday (or both) and provided you don’t have too late a night – otherwise you will not be able to work very effectively the next day. The key is to find a balance. And avoid the Sunday night blues - where you leave everything to the last minute on the weekend and run out of time. And that is just what they got. It turned out that they were in an A team competition and were at times totally outplayed by bigger, faster, more experienced sides. To their credit though, they stuck at it, never gave up, showed glimpses of real courage and skill and grew as a team. Dante Cox was a stand out in all the games with Baily Worthington Booy making an excellent captain. All the Year 8s made valuable contributions, non more than Jack Birch who joined the team to play Oxford Falls and showed he could match it with any of the A teams. Sam Callow’s rocket throw ins proved to be crucial in providing attacking moments and Tom Beresford was able to get into scoring positions when nothing seemed open. In each of the games, except the Oxford Falls game (which was their best performance of the season), the opposition started in strong form, only for the Whites to come back and close the gap in the second half. Six of the team play together at the weekend for Manly-Allambie United and the lessons learnt in the school fixtures have helped them develop as a strong unit. Oscar Cowell in particular was strong at the back with Dillon Clarke showing good form all across the park. So the team didn’t win a game. It conceded plenty of goals (despite Lachie Cale’s heroics). But they were a great bunch of boys who performed in a manner expected of the College. Next season, they will be the bigger boys. Bring on next season! Mr Steve Callow Teacher / Soccer Coach Waratah Cup Quarter-Finals 2013 Tuesday 5 June was the Waratah Rugby Cup Gala day at Hassell Park, St Ives. In the fine weather the four participating teams facing each other in the quarter-finals were St Paul's, Northern Beaches Secondary College, Turramurra High School and Brisbane Waters Secondary College. Each team played three games and the first to kick off were St Paul's and Brisbane Waters, expected to be a nail-biting game St Paul's rose to the challenge and Harrison Wright on the left opened the scoring with two consecutive tries to take their score to 14-15, one point behind. The resulting battle led to a penalty, taken successfully by Sam Gainsford, making the final score 18-15, a win for St Paul's. After a 15 minute break St Paul's played their second game against Turramurra, which also turned out to be a tight one. After tries by Billy Maxwell - outstanding in all three games in both attack and defence - and Nick Thomas who scored two amazing tries, the game ended with a 19-17 win for St Paul's. The last game between St Paul's and their rivals, Northern Beaches turned out to be basically the final of the day to see if St Paul's could pull off a win to go through to the semi-finals of the Waratah Cup. Both sides played hard and the half time score was 0-0. However, in the second half St Paul's pulled out all the stops. Sam Gainsford managed a good penalty conversion and with a tense 3 minutes to go James Crombie ran from 25 metres out to score the only try of the game, spectacularly converted by Sam Gainsford from the sideline. It was a resounding 10-0 victory for St Paul's! Congratulations to all: - it was a great team effort with lots of encouragement from the Reserve bench. We hope to see you on the field next time. Mr Antony Charles Teacher / Rugby Coach Freshwater Community Bank is the proud Community Sponsor for St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly Page 15 © St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly Liturgy Aboriginal Reconciliation Liturgy Last Wednesday the whole school met in honour of National Reconciliation Week. The school held a Liturgy at school where the traditional landowners of the Guringai clan were honoured as we met in prayer to reflect on reconciliation. We are blessed to have a school on such a sacred and historical site. Many would not know that the Eora warrior Pemulwuy was very active in this area and in fact a local Guringai man speared Governor Phillip in the shoulder on the very shores below our school. Governor Phillip had rowed with several soldiers to Little Manly from Circular Quay to meet with the local people regarding the tension between the traditional people and the newly arrived settlers. When we look at reconciliation in 2013 we reflect on the once abundant clans of people that once lived, fished and hunted on this very site. In 2013 it is hard to think of log canoes on the harbour, feasts of shellfish and whale on the foreshores of Collins Flat and gladiatorial fights that were commonplace when the English arrived on these lands. Reconciliation week means many different things to many people but overwhelmingly we take the time to stop and give thanks to the original people who were caretakers of this land for over forty thousand years. Many thanks to our Year 8 students, musicians and Ms Joanne Kalayzich for preparing and delivering the Liturgy. Almost 40% of under-age drinkers get alcohol from their parents and only 5% buy it themselves. (Australian Drug Foundation, May 2012) The Northern Beaches Community Drug Action Team (CDAT) together with NSW Police, Manly Drug Education and Counselling Centre (MDECC), Northern Sydney Local Health District and local Councils are working together to implement the Supply Means Supply campaign. The first step of the campaign is to survey parents/carers living on the northern beaches about their attitudes and behaviours relating to secondary supply. The survey will help CDAT to ascertain the social norms and pressures placed on this group. Secondly, the survey results will be used to tailor an awareness raising campaign and parent/carer workshops that focus on the legislation relating to secondary supply of alcohol, communication skills, and the harms associated with underage drinking. The workshops will also allow parents/carers to link into further support programs should they need ongoing support.
