Last Week’s Studies
Students spent time last week labeling their giants. Many
put the finishing touches on their giants and did their
initial scoring of their giants and conferenced with me for
my scoring. Then they went on to revise their giants to
increase their rubric score and make their giant even
better. They also have spent time reflecting on what they
have learned about math and measurement over the
time of this project. Our CGI word problems last week
dealt with the idea of something being so many times
taller – working on the concept of multiplication.
We completed our read aloud Mummies in the Morning,
which was the educational tool I used to help the
students learn how to summarize. After we completed
summarizing all 10 chapters together, the students
moved to summarizing their self selected fiction through
the Somebody, Wanted, But, So strategy. They did a
really good job for their first time doing this
independently. They will continue to do this several
times a week during SSR.
Antonyms, synonyms and homophones were our areas
of focus this week during word work. The students did an
outstanding job of creating a list of antonyms and
synonyms for the word “make”. These impressive list
included words like create, build, design, and construct
as synonyms. Antonyms for make that the student
volunteered were: destroy, ruin, wreck, demolish, crush,
and break.
The students were an amazingly attentive audience at
our annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. It was all
centered on King’s words and life through the student’s
eyes. They shared his impact on their lives through their
voices on an interview put into an iMovie and creation of
their dream poems. The students read, wrote, discussed
and even debated their ideas and thoughts about King
and their futures – education at its best! Please check
out Central’s website for sights and sounds from this
important celebration.

This Week’s Focus
During the week we will be starting a geometry unit in math.
Some students already started working on measurement in
the geometry subject – area and perimeter. These concepts
have been added to their counting jar with tiles as well as
working on arrays, multiplication and division. Our CGI
problems this week will deal with money and multiplication
around the subject of buying and selling popcorn and
Valentines. Also additional focus will be put on multi-step
problems.
We will continue to work on summarizing with a new read
aloud connected our Egypt research as well as practicing
on student’s individual texts during SSR.
Our word wall words this week are: play, how, eat, slow,
rain, and girl. We will be working on the “eat”, “ain”, “ay”,
and the two “ow” word families. Additionally, we will focus
on antonyms, synonyms and homophones.
At Writer’s Workshop the students will be determining if
they have enough information on their chosen topics to
create a book, creating glossaries and tables of contents.
