Christmas Scottie Mug Rug is an adorable appliqué project.
A Really cute mini quilt for your coffee mug and
sweet treat! Also makes a cute candle mat.
Finished size 7 ½” x 10 ½”
Supplies:
¼ yard Fusible Web
Brown thread for machine quilting and appliqué
Scrap fabric in the following colors: red, green, black
(or colors of your choice)
11-black tiny buttons for eye, paw print, ‘periods’
1 – ¼” black round or heart shaped button for paw print
1 – fat quarter fabric for front and backing (white)
7 ½ ” x 10 ½ “piece of batting
1/8 yard for binding (green)
Black DMC floss
Let’s Begin!
Cut 2 - 7 ½ x 10 ½” rectangles from fabric for backing and background
Cut 1 - 7 ½” x 10 ½” batting
From binding fabric:
Cut 1 - 2 ½” strip the WOF
Trace ‘Santa I Can Explain’ onto your background fabric. Using 2 strands of DMC floss,
use a backstitch to embroider the words.
Following the instructions provided by the fusible web manufacturer, trace 1 set of the
Christmas Scottie pieces grouping together pieces that will be using the same fabric.
Cut pieces out. Following the placement sheet, place the pieces on the background
fabric. Line up the edges. Some of your pieces will overlap. Iron in place.
Layer backing, batting and appliqué top and pin well. Set your sewing machine for
blanket stitch and using brown thread, blanket stitch around Christmas Scottie design as
pictured. Sew through all three layers as you blanket stitch.
Bind mug rug using 2 ½” strip. Fold in half lengthwise, iron. Sew binding on mug mug
rug from front side using a scant ¼” seam. Miter corners. Hand stitch binding to back
side of mug rug.
Sew on a tiny button for scottie’s eye and tiny buttons on for periods on the ‘Santa… I
Can Explain…’referring to pattern for placement.
make a yo-yo: Cut out a fabric circle using the fabric template. Following the diagram
hand sew a running stitch along the edge of the circle folding over a ¼” of fabric as you
‘go’. End your stitching at the starting point, then gently pull the thread to gather the
folded edge until it forms a circle. Make a few small stitches to hold the gathers in place.
Your yo-yo is complete! Make 1 green yo-yo for scottie’s dog tag. Using one larger
button and 4 small buttons, sew onto yo-yo to make a paw print. Sew yo-yo tag onto
mug rug as shown on pattern and photo.
