Just 20 years old, Berhanu left some of the biggest names in long distance running trailing and in warm weather conditions clocked a world leading time of 2:05:28 to win by 24 seconds from 2013 Dubai and Boston champion Lelisa Desisa. Deribe Robi completed an all Ethiopian podium with a time of 2:06:06. Ethiopia’s superstar Kenenisa Bekele dropped out beyond the 30km mark, appearing to suffer from a leg injury. In the women’s field, Aselefech Mergia celebrated her 30th birthday in style with a perfect comeback, winning the most thrilling finish in the history of the 6 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. The Ethiopian, who had taken time off competition to have a baby, returned to the marathon for the first time since the summer of 2012, winning in 2:20:02. In a duel right to the line, reigning World Half Marathon Champion Gladys Cherono was beaten by just one second on a superb marathon debut, while fellow Kenyan Lucy Kabuu was third in 2:20:21. Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, a record field of more than 25,000 runners entered the marathon, the 10km Road Race and the 4km Fun Run on a day that saw the event beamed to millions of homes across the world. “I never would have thought that I could www.dubaimarathon.org 7 win this race,” said Berhanu, who collected his trophy from HH Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Standard Chartered UAE CEO Mohsin Nathani. “It was my dream to do this in Dubai one day, but I didn’t expect it to happen this year. With around one kilometre to go, I sensed that I could win.” He has now improved by more than five minutes and is unbeaten in two races. “If my federation selects me then I would really like to run the marathon in the World Championships in the summer,” added Berhanu, who said he had no idea what to do with the prize money of US$200,000. “I never thought about the money. I really don’t know what I will do with it.” Meanwhile Dubai proved a tough marathon experience for Kenenisa Bekele. After winning his debut in Paris last April with 2:05:04 and finishing fourth in Chicago in 2:05:51, Dubai brought hope but ultimately frustration. Bekele 8 ran in the lead group up to the 28km point but dropped back quickly and finally stopped shortly after 30km. “Kenenisa suffered hamstring problems in both legs,” said his coach Renato Canova. “But I think the real problem is in his right Achilles tendon. At the end of November he had to reduce training because of this. “A world record was never a realistic target, but a 2:04 time seemed realistic. When I saw him running today he did not look relaxed, he looked tight, which is why he developed hamstring problems. But I remain very confident for his future marathon carrier - I think he will do really well.” The strongest women’s field ever in Dubai produced its own share of drama. Firstly the little known Tigist Tufa, Ethiopian-born and running for Bahrain, broke clear shortly after the start and maintained a daunting pace, leading a talented chasing group by a solid STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016 2015 minute at 20km, which suggested a 2:18 finishing time. But she paid the price in the end and was caught by the pack at 34km by a group comprising Aselefech, returning to racing after maternity and in search of a third Dubai title, fellow Ethiopians Aberu Kebede and Shure Demissie along with the Kenyan duo of Lucy Kabuu and 2014 World Half Marathon champion Gladys Cherono, who was making her debut at the distance. Cherono has dangerous finishing speed over the shorter distances but it was Mergia who won a contest which ran right to the finish line, completing a hat-trick of Dubai titles by just one second. “I told myself after having my daughter that I could win a marathon again,” she said. “We used the prize money from my first two wins in Dubai [2011 and 2012] to begin building a hotel back home, now we’ll be able to complete the job.” In the 10km men’s event, victory went to Fikad Kibreab of Eritrea (29m:56s) with Habtom Welderufael - also from Eritrea - in second (29m:58s) and Morocco’s Ihya Ben Youssef in third (30m:18s). Ruqiya Alkhaja of the UAE took the women’s 10km title in 30m:47s, with Eritrea’s Rahma Abas second (37m:46s) and Latifa Essarokh of France in third (37m:47s). The biggest event of its kind in the Middle East, the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon drew a mixture of spectators, including Olympians Lord Sebastian Coe and Haile Gebrselassie, HE Mattar Al Tayer (Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council), HE Saeed Hareb (General Secretary of the Dubai Sports Council) and Ahmad Al Kamali (UAE Athletics Federation President and IAAF Member). In addition to Standard Chartered as title sponsor, the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon is supported by the Dubai Sports Council, adidas, Dubai Eye 103.8FM, Sport 360, Masafi, Dubai Holding, Dubai Police and the RTA. www.dubaimarathon.org 9 RESULTS - STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2015 RESULTS WOMEN’S MARATHON RESULTS MEN’S MARATHON 1 Lemi Berhanu (ETH) 02:05:28 1 Aselefech Mergia (ETH) 02:20:02 2 Lelisa Desisa (ETH) 02:05:52 2 Gladys Cherono (KEN) 02:20:03 3 Deribe Robi (ETH) 02:06:06 3 Lucy Kabuu (KEN) 02:20:21 4 Feysa Lelisa (ETH) 02:06:35 4 Shuhre Demissie (ETH) 02:20:59 5 Sisay Lemma (ETH) 02:07:06 5 Aberu Kebede (ETH) 02:21:17 6 Bazu Worku (ETH) 02:07:09 6 Mulu Seboka (ETH) 02:21:56 7 Chele Dechase (ETH) 02:08:11 7 Tadelech Bekel (ETH) 02:22:51 8 Girmay Birhanu (ETH) 02:08:56 8 Aliaksandra Duliba (BLR) 02:23:06 9 Adugna Takele (ETH) 02:09:39 9 Abebech Afework (ETH) 02:23:33 10 Andualem Belay (ETH) 02:09:59 10 Ashete Bekere (ETH) RESULTS WOMEN’S 10KM RESULTS MEN’S 10KM 10 02:23:43 1 Fikad Kibreab (ERI) 00:29:56 1 Ruqiya Alkhaja (UAE) 00:30:47 2 Habtom Welderufael (ERI) 00:29:58 2 Rahma Abas (ERI) 00:37:46 3 Ihya Ben Youssef (MOR) 00:30:18 3 Latifa Essarokh (FRA) 00:37:47 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016 MEDIA INFORMATION MEDIA INFORMATION MEDIA INFORMATION MEDIA INFORMATION MEDIA INFORMATION n Introduction n The Media Team n The Media Centre n Press Conferences INTRODUCTION Welcome to the 2016 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon Media Guide. All results will be posted on the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon website on race day. The address is www.dubaimarathon.org DRINKS AND DRINKS STATIONS Dehydration is the biggest problem that marathon runners have to overcome. In a hard race on a hot and humid day, up to four litres of fluid can be lost through sweating and exhalation. It is important for runners to keep well hydrated. It should also be noted that overhydration can also be an issue. It is just as important for runners not to overhydrate reducing sodium levels. Isotonic drinks supplied by Isostar will be available at six stations. Drinks will be provided at the 10km, 15km, 20km, 25km, 30km and 35km stations. Water supplied by Oasis will be available at every 2.5km starting from 5km with the last drinks available at 40km and the finish. Around 100,000 359ml and 500ml plastic bottles of water have been supplied to meet the needs of the Marathon. In addition to water, many of the elite runners prefer to drink their own special drinks during the race. These special bottles are collected on Thursday night, kept in secure and cool conditions and placed on the route at the drink stations before the race. www.dubaimarathon.org 17 COURSE MAP STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 18 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016 www.dubaimarathon.org 19 SITE MAP START & FINISH 20 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016 2015 www.dubaimarathon.org 21 COURSE MAP STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON - 10KM ROAD RACE THE 2016 RACES THE 2016 RACES COURSE MAP STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON - 4KM FUN RUN 22 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016 THE 2016 RACES THE 2016 RACES n Start Times n Elite Men: Entries n Elite Men: Biographies START TIMES 06.30am ............................................ His first opportunity to represent Ethiopia at a major competition came at the 2008 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, where he finished second in the junior race. The following year he again represented his country in the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Jordan but went one better with a gold medal performance. After running for some years on the track, Abshero made his move to the marathon distance. He certainly announced his arrival in style with a stunning performance on his debut in Dubai where he took the victory in a fast 2:04:23. This time made him the fourth fastest marathon athlete ever and set a new course record for the Dubai race. Since that win he has gone on to claim third and fourth place finishes at the London Marathon (2013 and 2014) and sixth at the 2013 Chicago Marathon. Tsegaye Mekonnen (Ethiopia) Born: 15 June, 1995 Marathon Best: 2:04:32 (1st - Dubai, 2014) After taking part as a pacemaker in the 2013 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, Tsegaye changed to racer pure and simple for the 2014 edition and promptly ran an unofficial world junior record of 2:04:32 on his marathon debut. He used a portion of the US$200,000 first prize to improve his living standards, buying a house and a car. Considering he had barely three months from Dubai to racing in London in April, his fifth place in 2:08:06 was a creditable performance. His third and final marathon in 2014 was in Frankfurt in October, when he fell early on and later dropped out. Mekonnen is one of a family of seven. Aged 16, he agreed with his brother Zabela, two years his senior, to let a race decide their futures. The winner would pursue a career in running, the loser would concentrate on school. They would help each other and their families with their careers earnings. Tsegaye won while his brother is now at college. Mekonnen’s coach is Gemedu Dedefo and the well-known Italian trainer Gabriele Nicola also gives advice. www.dubaimarathon.org Tsegaye Kebede (Ethiopia) Born: 15 January, 1987 Marathon Best: 2:04:38 (1st Chicago, 2012) Tsegaye Kebede made his marathon debut in Amsterdam in 2007 and first enjoyed success year with victory at the 2008 Paris Marathon before collecting a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics. He continued his progress in 2009 by finishing second behind Samuel Wanjiru in the London Marathon, third at the World Championships in Berlin and winning in Fukuoka. The following year he won his first London Marathon in 2:05:19 and finished second in Chicago. In 2011 Kebede took the bronze medal in the New York Marathon. Third place at the 2012 London Marathon was followed by victory and a new personal best of 2:04:38 in Chicago, while in 2013 Kebede returned to London and won for a second time. It was a win that confirmed his place as the athlete with the most sub 2:08 finishes of all time. After taking fourth place at the World Championships in Moscow, he took second place in New York in 2013 to secure the victory in the men’s 20122013 World Marathon Majors. 27 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Tadese Tola (Ethiopia) Born: 31 October, 1987 Marathon Best: 2:04:49 (3rd Dubai, 2013) Tadese Tola has represented Ethiopia at World Championship level at cross country, road running and on the track. He first made an impact in 2006 when he helped the Ethiopian teams to bronze medals in the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and in the 20km race at the IAAF World Road Running Championships. He continued his progression with a silver medal at the All-Africa Games in the 10,000m and competed at the 2007 World Championships. Since 2008, he has largely focused on road running scoring wins at the New York City Half Marathon and the San Silvestre Vallecano. He made his debut at the marathon distance in 2009 at the Chicago Marathon and won on his second attempt at the Paris Marathon in 2010. He was the bronze medallist in the marathon at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics and set a personal best the same year when finishing in third place at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. 28 Tilahun Regassa (Ethiopia) Born: 18 January, 1990 Marathon Best: 2:05:27 (3rd Chicago, 2012) Born in Nazret, Regassa endured a difficult childhood. His parents divorced when he was three and he was raised by his father until the age of fifteen, when his father died. Tilahun worked for a stone company and lived on the streets for three years afterwards, relying on food handouts. In 2008 at the Lille Half Marathon, he won on his debut over the distance with a time of 59:36 - one of the fastest times for a teenage athlete and a new all-comers record for France. A bronze medal winner with Ethiopia at the 2009 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, Regassa’s first race of 2010 saw a new personal best and course record of 59:19 to win the Zayed International Half Marathon. On his marathon debut he took third place with the third fastest debut ever at the 2012 Chicago Marathon in 2:05:27 hours. His first victory over the distance came soon after, as he won the Rotterdam Marathon by over a minute in April 2013. ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Lemi Berhanu (Ethiopia) Born: 13 September, 1994 Marathon Best: 2:05:28 (1st Dubai, 2015) Lemi Berhanu stunned an elite field including his much more celebrated countryman Kenenisa Bekele when he stamped his name on the athletics world with a stunning win at the 2015 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. His winning time of 2:05:28 lowered his personal best by five minutes and secured him a winner’s cheque of US$200,000. Three months later in April 2015 he made it two wins in a row when the claimed victory in Poland’s Orlen Warsaw Marathon in 2:07:57 and will be one of the race favourites when he lines up in Dubai on January 22. Prior to his Dubai success, Berhanu enjoyed back-toback race wins at the Taiyuan International Marathon in China (2:13:10) and in the Zurich Marathon in Switzerland (2:10:40). Prior to those wins in 2014, he made his marathon debut with a fourth place finish at the 2013 Kampala Marathon in Uganda. STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016 Yakob Jarso (Ethiopia) Born: 5 February, 1988 Marathon Best: 2:06:17 (1st Seoul, 2014) Yakob Jarso made his marathon breakthrough at the Seoul International Marathon at the start of 2014 when he became the first Ethiopian winner of the long-running event and greatly improved his personal best to 2:06:17. His first international medal came at the 2007 African Junior Championships in Athletics, where he took the 3000 metres steeplechase silver medal behind Abel Mutai. He also became the first Ethiopian to make the Olympic steeplechase final since Eshetu Tura, who won the bronze at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Jarso was among the leaders for much of the final but slowed at the last hurdle and came in fourth place. He was initially disappointed with the performance, but was satisfied upon learning that his run of 8:13.47 had broken Tura’s Ethiopian record for the event, a mark which had stood since the Olympic final in Moscow twenty-eight years earlier. He made his marathon debut at the 2012 Beppu-Oita Marathon in Japan and was leading after 27 km, but fell back to finish in third place. Gebretsadik Abraha (Ethiopia) Born: 16 July, 1992 Marathon Best: 2:06:22 (3rd Amsterdam, 2012) Gebretsadik Abraha’s personal best of 2:06:22 has stood for almost four years now - the Ethiopian posted his best time when finishing third at the Amsterdam Marathon in 2012. Abraha made a name of himself in July 2010 when he clinched a silver medal in the 10,000m at the 13th IAAF World Junior Championship in Moncton with a time of 28:03:45. Stepping up to the classic Marathon distance, the 23 year-old Ethiopian impressed with that performance in the Netherlands before following it up with two fourth places finishes in 2013 at the Xiamen International Marathon in China and at the Honolulu Marathon in Hawaii. In 2014 a time of 2:07:06 was enough to secure second place at the Daegu International Marathon in South Korea, while in November 2015 he finished in fourth place in the Valencia Marathon in Spain in 2:08:38. www.dubaimarathon.org Raji Assefa Worku (Ethiopia) Born: 29 September, 1986 Marathon Best: 2:06:24 (2nd Paris, 2012) Raji Assefa Worku comes to Dubai with a reputation for consistency having finished on the podium in four of his last five Marathon appearances. His most recent outing saw him claim third place at the Guangzhou International Marathon in China last month. It came almost exactly a year to the day since he finished runnerup at the Fukuoka Marathon in Japan in a time of 2:08:48. April 2012 and the French capital saw Worku produce his best performance over the classic Marathon distance when he also claimed second place in the Paris Marathon and establish a new personal best time of 2:06:24. It came just three months after yet another runners-up position at the 2012 Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon in India. 29 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Sisay Lemma (Ethiopia) Born: 12 December, 1990 Marathon Best: 2:06:26 (1st Frankfurt, 2015) Sisay Lemma won the 32nd Vienna City Marathon in 2:07:31 in windy and relatively warm weather conditions in April 2015. The Ethiopian broke away after 27km and despite battling with headwinds, he achieved the biggest winning margin in the history of the race, coming home more than four minutes clear of his nearest rival in the Austrian capital. It was Lemma’s third marathon victory after winning in Carpi in 2012 and Warsaw the following year. Six months later he had that winning feeling once again when he became the first Ethiopian to win the Frankfurt Marathon. His time of 2:06:26 is also his personal best - beating his previous by 40 seconds although he was disappointed not to have posted a 2:05, a time he believes he is well capable of producing. Those two wins were a fitting end to a year that Lemma kicked off with a fifth place finish at the 2015 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. 30 Chala Dechasa (Ethiopia) Born: 13 June, 1984 Marathon Best: 2:06:33 (2nd Dubai, 2010) Chala Dechasa Beyene has happy memories of the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, none more so than the 2010 edition which saw him finish as runner-up to the legendary Haile Gebrselassie in a personal best time of 2:06:33. Two years earlier he also finished as runnerup in the Amsterdam Marathon. In 2011 he was also on the podium with a third place finish at the Rotterdam Marathon, while in 2015 he claimed seventh place in the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon and finished fourth at the Amsterdam Marathon. Dechasa sprung to national attention in 2008 when he was a surprise winner of the men’s race at the Great Ethiopian Run, an international 10km road race held in Addis Ababa. Running against one of the deepest fields ever assembled for Africa’s largest road race, Dechasa took victory in 28:55 in a race that saw future Olympic and World Champion Mo Farah finish down in 15th place. ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Eshetu Wendimu (Ethiopia) Born: 26 January, 1982 Marathon Best: 2:06:46 (3rd Dubai, 2010) Eshetu Wendimu is no stranger to the podium at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon - in three consecutive stagings of the world’s richest marathon, the 33 year-old Ethiopian has finished third on each occasion. His third place hat-trick began in 2009 with a 2:08:41. In 2010, he returned to the UAE and completed the course again in third place with a personal best time of 2:06:46 - in 2009 and 2010 the Dubai titles went to his compatriot the great Haile Gebrselassie - while in 2011 he found himself again in third spot in a time of 2:08:54. A few months after his 2011 appearance in Dubai, Wendimu was again on the podium with third place at the Paris Marathon in France. Among his most notable results is victory at the 2010 Great Wales Run, a 10km race he won in 27:45 - it’s one of five victories in a long and successful running career. STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016 Megersa Bacha (Ethiopia) Born: 18 January, 1985 Marathon Best: 2:06:56 (4th Paris, 2013) Megersa Bacha enjoyed the best performance of his Marathon career with a fourth place finish at the 2013 Paris Marathon in France in a personal best of 2:06:56. The Ethiopian finished 10th on his most recent appearance over the classic distance when he competed in the 2015 Rotterdam Marathon. In 2012 he missed out on victory in the TUI Marathon Hannover by the narrowest of all margins after a fascinating battle for victory ended with a photo-finish triumph for Joseph Kiptum of Kenya, who just held off Bacha in a classic battle to the tape. The finish was so close that both runners were given the same time of 2:09:56. The 2011 Turin Marathon in Italy also saw him on the podium after Bacha finished the race in a time of 2:08:55 for third place. Samuel Kosgei (Kenya) Born: 20 January, 1986 Marathon Best: 2:07:07 (1st Kosice, 2015) Of all the European marathons in 2015, only Eliud Kipchoge in London ran the last 5km faster than Samuel Kosgei at the Kosice Marathon. The Kenyan’s excellent performance brought him a new personal best (2:07:07) and victory in the oldest marathon in Europe. In only his third marathon he narrowly missed the course record by just six seconds - his winning time was the fifth fastest in Europe in 2015 behind the winners of Berlin, London, Paris and Rotterdam. One of his first international competitions was the Outer Banks Half Marathon in 2007, where he finished first in 1:02:34. The following year he ran at the World’s Best 10K in Puerto Rico where he recorded a time of 28:13 for sixth place. Kosgei was given the task of pacemaker at the 2009 Berlin Marathon and led Haile Gebrselassie up to the 32km mark. www.dubaimarathon.org Belay Asefa (Ethiopia) Born: 17 June, 1992 Marathon Best: 2:07:10 (4th Hamburg, 2014) Belay Asefa made an impressive improvement on his marathon best in Hamburg in May 2014. His fourth place in 2:07:11 was over two and a half minutes faster than his previous fastest at the Eindhoven Marathon in the Netherlands in October 2013. His run in the Dutch city saw him secure a podium place after taking third place in 2:09:39 some 28 seconds behind the winner and fellow-Ethiopian Yemane Tsegay Adhane. This is a rate of improvement which the fast Dubai course has the potential to accelerate still further. His half marathon best is 60:59, set in winning the Lake Maggiore event at Verbania in Italy in 2012, the same year in which he finished 11th at the World Half Marathon Championships. Asefa comes to the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon fresh from fifth place on his last outing when he recorded a time of 2:10:32 at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. 31 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE WOMEN BIOGRAPHIES ELITE RUNNERS ELITE WOMEN: ENTRIES 32 BIB Name Country Bib Name PB W1 Tirfi Tsegaye Beyene Ethiopia TSEGAYE 2:20:18 W2 Meselech Melkamu Haileyesus Ethiopia MELKAMU 2:21:01 W3 Mula Seboka Seyfu Ethiopia SEBOKA 2:21:56 W4 Mamitu Daska Molisa Ethiopia DASKA 2:21:59 W5 Marima Mohammed Hasen Bahrain MARIMA 2:23:06 W6 Gulume Tollesa Chala Ethiopia TOLLESA 2:23:12 W7 Dinknesh Mekash Tefera Ethiopia MEKASH 2:23:12 W8 Yebrgual Melese Arage Ethiopia MELESE 2:23:23 W9 Meseret Mengistu Biru Ethiopia MENGISTU 2:23:26 W10 Abebech Afework Bekele Ethiopia AFEWORK 2:23:33 W11 Fatuma Sado Dergo Ethiopia SADO 2:24:16 W12 Mestawet Tufa Demissie Ethiopia TUFA 2:24:45 W13 Aberu Mekuria Zennebe Ethiopia MEKURIA 2:25:58 W14 Asahssah Malika Morocco MALIKA 2:28:01 W15 Etaferahu Wodaj Temesgen Ethiopia WODAJ 2:29:24 W16 Katarzyna Kowalska Poland KOWALSKA 2:29:41 W17 Megertu Ifa Geletu Ethiopia IFA 2:32:31 W18 Eunice Chebichii Chumba Kenya CHUMBA 2:33:12 W19 Fasika Metaferiya Zenebe Ethiopia METARFERIYA 2:39:30 W20 Sutume Asefa Kebede Ethiopia ASEFA 68:23 H W21 Amane Beriso Shankule Ethiopia BERISO 68:43 H W22 Waganesh Mekashav Amare Ethiopia MEKASHAV 68:49 H W23 Afera Godfay Berha Ethiopia GODFAY 69:51 H W24 Meseret Legese Biratu Ethiopia LEGESE 70:12 H W25 Shitaye Eshete Habtegebrel Bahrain ESHETE 70:14 H W26 Hiwot Gebrekidan Gebremaryam Ethiopia GEBREKIDAN - W27 Desi Jisa Mekonin Bahrain JISA - STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016 Tirfi Tsegaye Mulu Seboka Mamitu Daska (Ethiopia) (Ethiopia) (Ethiopia) Born: 25 November, 1984 Born: 25 September, 1984 Born: 16 October, 1983 Marathon Best: 2:20:18 Marathon Best: 2:21:56 Marathon Best: 2:21:59 (1st Berlin, 2014) (5th Dubai, 2015) (1st Frankfurt, 2011) Three years ago, Tirfi arrived in Dubai on the back of two outstanding performances in 2012. In April she had won the Paris Marathon in 2:21:40 - a personal best by over a minute - which led to the Ethiopian selectors included her as a reserve in their Olympic marathon squad. Further improvement followed in Berlin in September where she finished as runner-up improving her best to 2:21:19. In January 2013, she won the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon despite heavy fog with a time of 2:23:23. She performed less well in her second race of the year, coming seventh at the Frankfurt Marathon in 2:26:57 but bounced back in spectacular style in September 2014 when she won the Berlin Marathon in a personal best time of 2:20:18. Concentrating on road racing from the start of her international career, she has followed a familiar path from the Oromia region, which has produced a host of star performers including Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele. Mulu Seboka returns to Dubai for the third year in succession after clinching victory in the UAE in 2014 and claiming fifth place in a new personal best time of 2:21:56 in January 2015. She ended the 2015 year with her participation in her first World Marathon Major in Chicago, coming fifth in 2:24:40. In between Dubai and Chicago, she set the course record at the Run Czech Karlovy Vary half marathon - an IAAF Silver Label race described as challenging and undulating - with a time of 1:09:11. An experienced marathoner with wins in Daegu and Toronto in 2014, Mulu returns to Dubai looking for a solid time as she focuses on being in the running for a possible spot on the Olympic team to Rio. It has been a long road since her marathon debut in 2003, when she recorded a time of 2:43:30 in Pyongyang, North Korea. Five years later, she broke 2:30 and after winning the 2008 Mumbai Marathon in 2:30:04, she made the breakthrough later that year with 2:29:06 in Toronto. www.dubaimarathon.org Running at the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, she was part of the silver medalwinning Ethiopian women’s team in what was a memorable year for Daska. She also set a personal best at the New York City Half Marathon, coming in second behind Paula Radcliffe in a time of 1:11:04 before making her debut over the marathon distance in September, recording a time of 2:26:38 to take third place at the Berlin Marathon. She began 2010 with a career best run of 2:24:19 to take victory on her second outing over the distance at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. At the 2010 IAAF World Cross Country Championships she again helped Ethiopia take team silver, while the following year saw her win the Houston Marathon in January 2011. Her biggest achievement that year came at the Frankfurt Marathon, where she bettered the course record by nearly 90 seconds with her time of 2:21:59, which remains her personal best. 33 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE WOMEN BIOGRAPHIES Gulume Tollesa (Ethiopia) Born: 11 September, 1992 Marathon Best: 2:23:12 (1st Frankfurt, 2015) Gulume Tollesa stunned the running world with an impressive win at the 2015 Frankfurt Marathon that was as thrilling as it was unexpected. It came just three years after Tollesa ran her first marathon in Mumbai finishing in 14th place in a time of 2:40:55. Nine months later she was on the podium for the first time when a time of 2:40:15 was enough to clinch third place at the Porto Marathon. She clinched her first win at the Marrakesh Marathon in 2013 (2:36:05) but it was in Frankfurt just three months ago where she made her mark winning in 2:23:12 after not being considered one of the title contenders. But after breaking away at the 40km mark, she held her nerve despite the challenge from fellow Ethiopian Dinknesh Mekash. “I thought I could finish among the first three since my training had gone very well but I never dreamed I would win,” she said. 34 Dinknesh Mekash (Ethiopia) Born: 1985 Marathon Best: 2:23:12 (2nd Frankfurt, 2015) Dinknesh, which means ‘wondrous one’ in Amharic, grew up in the town of Bekoji, the renowned ‘Town of Runners’. As a young athlete she was brought to Addis Ababa by the organisation ‘Running Across Borders’ and given coaching, accommodation and support to pursue a running career. In 2010, Mekash travelled outside of her country for the first time, flying to Scotland to participate in the Loch Ness Marathon. She won in 2:46:39, which seems modest compared to her present bests and future targets. At the 2015 Frankfurt Marathon in Germany, she starred alongside compatriot GulumeTollesa in a sprint finish that saw victory go to Tollesa - Mekash was given the same time (a personal best 2:23:12) in second place. Last year she also successfully defended her title at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon leaving the rest of the field behind at the halfway mark to win the women’s competition in 2:30:00. ELITE RUNNERS ELITE WOMEN BIOGRAPHIES Yebrgual Melese Arage (Ethiopia) Born: 18 April, 1990 Marathon Best: 2:23:23 (1st Houston, 2015) Yebrgual Melese established a new personal best thanks to a strong showing at the Houston Marathon in the USA in January 2015. Taking advantage of the benign conditions, she stormed home for victory in a time of 2:23:23. Melese made her debut at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon in 2014 where a time of 2:29:46 was enough to secure her a creditable 13th place. Later in the year she finished in second place at the Paris Marathon in France, while in 2015 she followed her Houston success and underlined her growing maturity at the distance with a strong showing at the Chicago Marathon. While Kenya’s world halfmarathon record holder Florence Kiplagat claimed the women’s race, breaking away at 40km to win in 2:23:33, Melese claimed second place just ten seconds adrift of the Kenyan. STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016 Meseret Mengistu Abebech Afework Fatuma Sado (Ethiopia) (Ethiopia) (Ethiopia) Born: 6 March, 1990 Born: 11 December, 1990 Born: 11 October, 1991 Marathon Best: 2:23:26 Marathon Best: 2:23:33 Marathon Best: 2:24:16 (1st Paris, 2015) (9th Dubai, 2015) (2nd Toronto, 2015) Meseret Mengistu emphasised her growing reputation in distance running when she won her third consecutive marathon - and her most notable - with a personal best of 2:23:26 at the 2015 Paris Marathon. Victory in the French capital followed Marathon wins in Cape Town, Soweto, Omsk and Bali but it was the manner of the breakthrough performance in Paris that captured the imagination as she improved her personal best by almost six minutes. No stranger to success, Mengistu was part of the Ethiopian team that won the silver medal at the Half Marathon World Championships in Nanning in China in 2010. Along with team-mates Dire Tune and Feyse Tadese, Mengistu made sure of a podium place thanks to finishing sixth in the individual event. On her most recent appearance, Mengistu claimed eighth place in a closelyfought Frankfurt Marathon won by fellow Dubai competitor Gulume Tollesa. Abebech Afework has represented Ethiopia at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. She first began competing abroad in 2009 taking third at the Udine Half Marathon in a time of 1:11:15 and running a 10,000m best of 32:52.67 minutes in Utrecht. Afework made her marathon debut in 2013 at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon where she finished in eighth place in a creditable time of 2:27:08. Later in the year she produced a better performance at the 2013 Rotterdam Marathon, placing second behind Jemima Sumgong with a time of 2:23:59 hours. She returned to Dubai again in 2015 and while she set a new personal best of 2:23:33 such is the strength in depth of the world’s richest marathon she had to settle for ninth place. Also claimed third place in the 2015 Ottawa Marathon (2:25:53) www.dubaimarathon.org Fatuma Sado played her part in a thrilling finish to the 2015 Toronto Waterfront Marathon won by compatriot Shure Demise. Sado battled 2012 Boston Marathon champion Sharon Cherop to the finish before taking second place with both women timed at 2:24:16 - a new personal best for Sado who has won marathons in Hamburg, Los Angeles and Xiamen. The 24 year-old made her debut over the full marathon distance in 2011 winning the Hamburg Marathon with a time of 2:28:30. Later that year she improved to 2:28:01 with a run at the Istanbul Marathon, coming second behind stablemate Alemitu Abera. Sado had five outings in the 2012 season when she built her standing as an elite marathon runner. She was runner-up at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon and finished in 2:25:39 on the Los Angeles Marathon’s downhill course, where she won the women’s race and also the gender challenge. 35 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE WOMEN BIOGRAPHIES Mestawet Tufa (Ethiopia) Born: 14 September, 1983 Marathon Best: 2:24:45 (Nanging, 2015) As a relative novice, Mestawet Tufa was the winner of the women’s 10,000m at the 2007 All-Africa Championships and the runner up in the senior women’s race at the 2008 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh and almost beat the 15km world record on the roads. She competed in her first mountain race at the Obudu Ranch International Mountain Race in Nigeria. She ran strongly, leading the race until she collapsed due to severe dehydration 50m from the finish line and was treated by a medical team. She returned the following year and finished as runner-up, just one second behind the winner Mamitu Daska. In 2014, despite dreadfully hot and humid conditions, Tufa won the Yellow River Marathon in China setting a course record of 2:28:27. 36 Aberu Mekuria (Ethiopia) Born: 24 December, 1983 Marathon Best: 2:25:30 (1st Ottowa, 2015) Ethiopia’s Aberu Mekuria won the Ottawa Marathon in May 2015 with the second-fastest time in the history of the IAAF Silver Label Road Race. Mekuria took almost half a minute off her previous personal best (set when finishing 14th at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon four months earlier) to win in 2:25:30. It was the fourth career win at the Marathon distance since she opened her account with victory at the Cologne Marathon in Germany in 2011. She followed that up a year later with win number two at the Eindhoven Marathon in the Netherlands, while her third Marathon title came at the 2013 Hengshui International Marathon in China. Other notable results include podium places for second in Hanover in 2012 and third at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon in India in January 2013.
