ETHIOPIANS RULE
AT STANDARD CHARTERED
DUBAI MARATHON 2015
It was yet another day of dominance
for Ethiopian athletes at the Standard
Chartered Dubai Marathon as little
known Lemi Berhanu Hayle and the
sublime Aselefech Mergia swept the
board in the world’s richest marathon.
Just 20 years old, Berhanu left some of
the biggest names in long distance running
trailing and in warm weather conditions
clocked a world leading time of 2:05:28 to
win by 24 seconds from 2013 Dubai and
Boston champion Lelisa Desisa. Deribe Robi
completed an all Ethiopian podium with a
time of 2:06:06. Ethiopia’s superstar Kenenisa
Bekele dropped out beyond the 30km mark,
appearing to suffer from a leg injury.
In the women’s field, Aselefech Mergia
celebrated her 30th birthday in style
with a perfect comeback, winning the
most thrilling finish in the history of the
6
STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016
Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon.
The Ethiopian, who had taken time off
competition to have a baby, returned to the
marathon for the first time since the summer
of 2012, winning in 2:20:02. In a duel right
to the line, reigning World Half Marathon
Champion Gladys Cherono was beaten
by just one second on a superb marathon
debut, while fellow Kenyan Lucy Kabuu was
third in 2:20:21.
Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh
Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al
Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and
Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, a
record field of more than 25,000 runners
entered the marathon, the 10km Road Race
and the 4km Fun Run on a day that saw the
event beamed to millions of homes across
the world.
“I never would have thought that I could

7
win this race,” said Berhanu, who collected
his trophy from HH Sheikh Mansour bin
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and
Standard Chartered UAE CEO Mohsin
Nathani. “It was my dream to do this in Dubai
one day, but I didn’t expect it to happen
this year. With around one kilometre to go, I
sensed that I could win.”
He has now improved by more than
five minutes and is unbeaten in two races.
“If my federation selects me then I would
really like to run the marathon in the World
Championships in the summer,” added
Berhanu, who said he had no idea what to do
with the prize money of US$200,000. “I never
thought about the money. I really don’t know
what I will do with it.”
Meanwhile Dubai proved a tough marathon
experience for Kenenisa Bekele. After winning
his debut in Paris last April with 2:05:04 and
finishing fourth in Chicago in 2:05:51, Dubai
brought hope but ultimately frustration. Bekele
8
ran in the lead group up to the 28km point
but dropped back quickly and finally stopped
shortly after 30km.
“Kenenisa suffered hamstring problems in
both legs,” said his coach Renato Canova.
“But I think the real problem is in his right
Achilles tendon. At the end of November he
had to reduce training because of this.
“A world record was never a realistic
target, but a 2:04 time seemed realistic.
When I saw him running today he did not
look relaxed, he looked tight, which is
why he developed hamstring problems.
But I remain very confident for his future
marathon carrier - I think he will do really
well.”
The strongest women’s field ever in Dubai
produced its own share of drama. Firstly the
little known Tigist Tufa, Ethiopian-born and
running for Bahrain, broke clear shortly after
the start and maintained a daunting pace,
leading a talented chasing group by a solid
STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016
2015
minute at 20km, which suggested a 2:18
finishing time.
But she paid the price in the end and
was caught by the pack at 34km by a group
comprising Aselefech, returning to racing
after maternity and in search of a third Dubai
title, fellow Ethiopians Aberu Kebede and
Shure Demissie along with the Kenyan duo of
Lucy Kabuu and 2014 World Half Marathon
champion Gladys Cherono, who was making
her debut at the distance.
Cherono has dangerous finishing speed
over the shorter distances but it was Mergia
who won a contest which ran right to the
finish line, completing a hat-trick of Dubai
titles by just one second.
“I told myself after having my daughter that
I could win a marathon again,” she said. “We
used the prize money from my first two wins
in Dubai [2011 and 2012] to begin building
a hotel back home, now we’ll be able to
complete the job.”
In the 10km men’s event, victory went
to Fikad Kibreab of Eritrea (29m:56s) with
Habtom Welderufael - also from Eritrea - in
second (29m:58s) and Morocco’s Ihya Ben
Youssef in third (30m:18s). Ruqiya Alkhaja
of the UAE took the women’s 10km title
in 30m:47s, with Eritrea’s Rahma Abas
second (37m:46s) and Latifa Essarokh of
France in third (37m:47s).
The biggest event of its kind in the
Middle East, the Standard Chartered Dubai
Marathon drew a mixture of spectators,
including Olympians Lord Sebastian Coe
and Haile Gebrselassie, HE Mattar Al
Tayer (Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports
Council), HE Saeed Hareb (General
Secretary of the Dubai Sports Council) and
Ahmad Al Kamali (UAE Athletics Federation
President and IAAF Member).
In addition to Standard Chartered as
title sponsor, the Standard Chartered Dubai
Marathon is supported by the Dubai Sports
Council, adidas, Dubai Eye 103.8FM, Sport
360, Masafi, Dubai Holding, Dubai Police and
the RTA.

TIME KEEPING
The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon uses
advance MIKATAGS technology to time all
runners in the race, including the wheelchair
athletes.
All runners will be issued with a number
including a Tag - a transponder attached
to their running number. This Tag is read
each time the runner passes strategically
placed mats and the finish line. These times
are instantly relayed using an integrated
communications system developed by Mika
Timing, the marathon’s information services
provider, to TV for immediate on–screen
display. The same information is also delivered
to the marathon’s race day Media Centre to
provide an instant resource for the world’s
media.
All results will be posted on the Standard
Chartered Dubai Marathon website on race
day. The address is www.dubaimarathon.org
DRINKS AND DRINKS STATIONS
Dehydration is the biggest problem that
marathon runners have to overcome. In a
hard race on a hot and humid day, up to four
litres of fluid can be lost through sweating and
exhalation. It is important for runners to keep
well hydrated. It should also be noted that
overhydration can also be an issue. It is just
as important for runners not to overhydrate
reducing sodium levels.
Isotonic drinks supplied by Isostar will
be available at six stations. Drinks will be
provided at the 10km, 15km, 20km, 25km,
30km and 35km stations. Water supplied by
Oasis will be available at every 2.5km starting
from 5km with the last drinks available at
40km and the finish. Around 100,000 359ml
and 500ml plastic bottles of water have been
supplied to meet the needs of the Marathon.
In addition to water, many of the elite
runners prefer to drink their own special
drinks during the race. These special bottles
are collected on Thursday night, kept in
secure and cool conditions and placed on the
route at the drink stations before the race.

STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2016
Ayele Abshero
(Ethiopia)
Born: 28 December, 1990
Marathon Best: 2:04:23
(1st Dubai, 2012)
Ayele Abshero took up running
in order to follow in the footsteps
of his older brother, Tessema.
His first opportunity to represent
Ethiopia at a major competition
came at the 2008 IAAF World
Cross Country Championships,
where he finished second in the
junior race.
The following year he again
represented his country in the
junior race at the IAAF World
Cross Country Championships
in Jordan but went one better
with a gold medal performance.
After running for some
years on the track, Abshero
made his move to the
marathon distance. He
certainly announced his
arrival in style with a stunning
performance on his debut
in Dubai where he took the
victory in a fast 2:04:23. This
time made him the fourth
fastest marathon athlete ever
and set a new course record
for the Dubai race.
Since that win he has gone
on to claim third and fourth place
finishes at the London Marathon
(2013 and 2014) and sixth at the
2013 Chicago Marathon.
Tsegaye Mekonnen
(Ethiopia)
Born: 15 June, 1995
Marathon Best: 2:04:32
(1st - Dubai, 2014)
After taking part as a pacemaker
in the 2013 Standard Chartered
Dubai Marathon, Tsegaye
changed to racer pure and
simple for the 2014 edition and
promptly ran an unofficial world
junior record of 2:04:32 on his
marathon debut.
He used a portion of the
US$200,000 first prize to
improve his living standards,
buying a house and a car.
Considering he had barely
three months from Dubai to
racing in London in April, his
fifth place in 2:08:06 was
a creditable performance.
His third and final marathon
in 2014 was in Frankfurt in
October, when he fell early on
and later dropped out.
Mekonnen is one of a
family of seven. Aged 16, he
agreed with his brother Zabela,
two years his senior, to let a
race decide their futures. The
winner would pursue a career
in running, the loser would
concentrate on school. They
would help each other and
their families with their careers
earnings. Tsegaye won while
his brother is now at college.
Mekonnen’s coach is Gemedu
Dedefo and the well-known
Italian trainer Gabriele Nicola
also gives advice.
www.dubaimarathon.org
Tsegaye Kebede
(Ethiopia)
Born: 15 January, 1987
Marathon Best: 2:04:38
(1st Chicago, 2012)
Tsegaye Kebede made his
marathon debut in Amsterdam
in 2007 and first enjoyed
success year with victory at the
2008 Paris Marathon before
collecting a bronze medal at the
Beijing Olympics. He continued
his progress in 2009 by finishing
second behind Samuel Wanjiru
in the London Marathon, third
at the World Championships in
Berlin and winning in Fukuoka.
The following year he won
his first London Marathon in
2:05:19 and finished second in
Chicago. In 2011 Kebede took
the bronze medal in the New
York Marathon.
Third place at the 2012
London Marathon was followed
by victory and a new personal
best of 2:04:38 in Chicago,
while in 2013 Kebede returned
to London and won for a
second time. It was a win that
confirmed his place as the
athlete with the most sub 2:08
finishes of all time.
After taking fourth place at
the World Championships in
Moscow, he took second place
in New York in 2013 to secure
the victory in the men’s 20122013 World Marathon Majors.

Tadese Tola
(Ethiopia)
Born: 31 October, 1987
Marathon Best: 2:04:49
(3rd Dubai, 2013)
Tadese Tola has represented
Ethiopia at World Championship
level at cross country, road
running and on the track.
He first made an impact
in 2006 when he helped the
Ethiopian teams to bronze
medals in the junior race at
the IAAF World Cross Country
Championships and in the 20km
race at the IAAF World Road
Running Championships. He
continued his progression with
a silver medal at the All-Africa
Games in the 10,000m and
competed at the 2007 World
Championships.
Since 2008, he has largely
focused on road running
scoring wins at the New
York City Half Marathon and
the San Silvestre Vallecano.
He made his debut at the
marathon distance in 2009
at the Chicago Marathon and
won on his second attempt at
the Paris Marathon in 2010. He
was the bronze medallist in the
marathon at the 2013 World
Championships in Athletics
and set a personal best the
same year when finishing in
third place at the Standard
Chartered Dubai Marathon.
28
Tilahun Regassa
(Ethiopia)
Born: 18 January, 1990
Marathon Best: 2:05:27
(3rd Chicago, 2012)
Born in Nazret, Regassa endured
a difficult childhood. His parents
divorced when he was three and
he was raised by his father until
the age of fifteen, when his father
died. Tilahun worked for a stone
company and lived on the streets
for three years afterwards, relying
on food handouts.
In 2008 at the Lille Half
Marathon, he won on his debut
over the distance with a time of
59:36 - one of the fastest times
for a teenage athlete and a new
all-comers record for France.
A bronze medal winner with
Ethiopia at the 2009 IAAF World
Half Marathon Championships,
Regassa’s first race of 2010 saw
a new personal best and course
record of 59:19 to win the Zayed
International Half Marathon.
On his marathon debut he
took third place with the third
fastest debut ever at the 2012
Chicago Marathon in 2:05:27
hours. His first victory over the
distance came soon after, as he
won the Rotterdam Marathon by
over a minute in April 2013.

(1st Dubai, 2015)
Lemi Berhanu stunned an
elite field including his much
more celebrated countryman
Kenenisa Bekele when he
stamped his name on the
athletics world with a stunning
win at the 2015 Standard
Chartered Dubai Marathon.
His winning time of 2:05:28
lowered his personal best
by five minutes and secured
him a winner’s cheque of
US$200,000. Three months
later in April 2015 he made it
two wins in a row when the
claimed victory in Poland’s
Orlen Warsaw Marathon in
2:07:57 and will be one of the
race favourites when he lines
up in Dubai on January 22.
Prior to his Dubai success,
Berhanu enjoyed back-toback race wins at the Taiyuan
International Marathon in
China (2:13:10) and in the
Zurich Marathon in Switzerland
(2:10:40). Prior to those wins
in 2014, he made his marathon
debut with a fourth place finish
at the 2013 Kampala Marathon
in Uganda.

Yakob Jarso
(Ethiopia)
Born: 5 February, 1988
Marathon Best: 2:06:17
(1st Seoul, 2014)
Yakob Jarso made his
marathon breakthrough at the
Seoul International Marathon
at the start of 2014 when he
became the first Ethiopian
winner of the long-running
event and greatly improved his
personal best to 2:06:17.
His first international medal
came at the 2007 African
Junior Championships in
Athletics, where he took the
3000 metres steeplechase
silver medal behind Abel
Mutai. He also became the first
Ethiopian to make the Olympic
steeplechase final since Eshetu
Tura, who won the bronze at
the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Jarso was among the
leaders for much of the final
but slowed at the last hurdle
and came in fourth place. He
was initially disappointed with
the performance, but was
satisfied upon learning that
his run of 8:13.47 had broken
Tura’s Ethiopian record for
the event, a mark which had
stood since the Olympic final
in Moscow twenty-eight years
earlier. He made his marathon
debut at the 2012 Beppu-Oita
Marathon in Japan and was
leading after 27 km, but fell
back to finish in third place.
Gebretsadik Abraha
(Ethiopia)
Born: 16 July, 1992
Marathon Best: 2:06:22
(3rd Amsterdam, 2012)
Gebretsadik Abraha’s personal
best of 2:06:22 has stood for
almost four years now - the
Ethiopian posted his best time
when finishing third at the
Amsterdam Marathon in 2012.
Abraha made a name of
himself in July 2010 when he
clinched a silver medal in the
10,000m at the 13th IAAF World
Junior Championship in Moncton
with a time of 28:03:45.
Stepping up to the classic
Marathon distance, the 23
year-old Ethiopian impressed
with that performance in the
Netherlands before following
it up with two fourth places
finishes in 2013 at the Xiamen
International Marathon in China
and at the Honolulu Marathon
in Hawaii.
In 2014 a time of 2:07:06
was enough to secure second
place at the Daegu International
Marathon in South Korea, while
in November 2015 he finished
in fourth place in the Valencia
Marathon in Spain in 2:08:38.

Marathon Best: 2:06:24
(2nd Paris, 2012)
Raji Assefa Worku comes to
Dubai with a reputation for
consistency having finished on
the podium in four of his last five
Marathon appearances.
His most recent outing
saw him claim third place at
the Guangzhou International
Marathon in China last month.
It came almost exactly a year to
the day since he finished runnerup at the Fukuoka Marathon in
Japan in a time of 2:08:48.
April 2012 and the French
capital saw Worku produce
his best performance over
the classic Marathon distance
when he also claimed second
place in the Paris Marathon and
establish a new personal best
time of 2:06:24. It came just
three months after yet another
runners-up position at the 2012
Standard Chartered Mumbai
Marathon in India.

Sisay Lemma won the 32nd
Vienna City Marathon in
2:07:31 in windy and relatively
warm weather conditions in
April 2015.
The Ethiopian broke away
after 27km and despite battling
with headwinds, he achieved
the biggest winning margin in
the history of the race, coming
home more than four minutes
clear of his nearest rival in the
Austrian capital. It was Lemma’s
third marathon victory after
winning in Carpi in 2012 and
Warsaw the following year.
Six months later he had
that winning feeling once again
when he became the first
Ethiopian to win the Frankfurt
Marathon. His time of 2:06:26 is
also his personal best - beating
his previous by 40 seconds although he was disappointed
not to have posted a 2:05,
a time he believes he is well
capable of producing.
Those two wins were a
fitting end to a year that Lemma
kicked off with a fifth place finish
at the 2015 Standard Chartered
Dubai Marathon.

Chala Dechasa Beyene has
happy memories of the Standard

none more so than the 2010
edition which saw him finish
as runner-up to the legendary
Haile Gebrselassie in a personal

Dechasa sprung to national
attention in 2008 when he was
a surprise winner of the men’s

three consecutive stagings of
the world’s richest marathon,
the 33 year-old Ethiopian has
finished third on each occasion.
His third place hat-trick

Megersa Bacha enjoyed
the best performance of his
Marathon career with a fourth

Marathon in France in a personal
best of 2:06:56. The Ethiopian
finished 10th on his most recent
appearance over the classic

the 2015 Rotterdam Marathon.
In 2012 he missed out on
victory in the TUI Marathon
Hannover by the narrowest of

battle for victory ended with a
photo-finish triumph for Joseph
Kiptum of Kenya, who just held
off Bacha in a classic battle to

The finish was so close that
both runners were given the

Of all the European marathons
in 2015, only Eliud Kipchoge
in London ran the last 5km
faster than Samuel Kosgei
at the Kosice Marathon. The
Kenyan’s excellent performance
brought him a new personal
best (2:07:07) and victory in the
oldest marathon in Europe.
In only his third marathon
he narrowly missed the course
record by just six seconds - his
winning time was the fifth fastest
in Europe in 2015 behind the
winners of Berlin, London, Paris
and Rotterdam.
One of his first international
competitions was the Outer

where he finished first in 1:02:34.
The following year he ran at the

His run in the Dutch city saw
him secure a podium place after
taking third place in 2:09:39
some 28 seconds behind the

Marathon Best: 2:21:59
(1st Berlin, 2014)
(5th Dubai, 2015)
(1st Frankfurt, 2011)
Three years ago, Tirfi arrived
in Dubai on the back of two
outstanding performances in
2012. In April she had won
the Paris Marathon in 2:21:40
- a personal best by over
a minute - which led to the
Ethiopian selectors included her
as a reserve in their Olympic
marathon squad.
Further improvement
followed in Berlin in September
where she finished as runner-up
improving her best to 2:21:19.
In January 2013, she
won the Standard Chartered
Dubai Marathon despite heavy
fog with a time of 2:23:23.
She performed less well in
her second race of the year,
coming seventh at the Frankfurt
Marathon in 2:26:57 but
bounced back in spectacular
style in September 2014 when
she won the Berlin Marathon in a
personal best time of 2:20:18.
Concentrating on road
racing from the start of her
international career, she has
followed a familiar path from
the Oromia region, which
has produced a host of star
performers including Olympic
champion Kenenisa Bekele.
Mulu Seboka returns to Dubai
for the third year in succession
after clinching victory in the UAE
in 2014 and claiming fifth place
in a new personal best time of
2:21:56 in January 2015.
She ended the 2015 year
with her participation in her
first World Marathon Major in
Chicago, coming fifth in 2:24:40.
In between Dubai and Chicago,
she set the course record at the
Run Czech Karlovy Vary half
marathon - an IAAF Silver Label
race described as challenging
and undulating - with a time
of 1:09:11.
An experienced marathoner
with wins in Daegu and Toronto
in 2014, Mulu returns to Dubai
looking for a solid time as she
focuses on being in the running
for a possible spot on the
Olympic team to Rio.
It has been a long road since
her marathon debut in 2003,
when she recorded a time of
2:43:30 in Pyongyang, North
Korea. Five years later, she
broke 2:30 and after winning
the 2008 Mumbai Marathon
in 2:30:04, she made the
breakthrough later that year with
2:29:06 in Toronto.
www.dubaimarathon.org
Running at the 2009 IAAF World
Cross Country Championships,
she was part of the silver medalwinning Ethiopian women’s team
in what was a memorable year
for Daska.
She also set a personal
best at the New York City Half
Marathon, coming in second
behind Paula Radcliffe in a
time of 1:11:04 before making
her debut over the marathon
distance in September, recording
a time of 2:26:38 to take third
place at the Berlin Marathon.
She began 2010 with a
career best run of 2:24:19 to
take victory on her second outing
over the distance at the Standard
Chartered Dubai Marathon.
At the 2010 IAAF World
Cross Country Championships
she again helped Ethiopia take
team silver, while the following
year saw her win the Houston
Marathon in January 2011. Her
biggest achievement that year
came at the Frankfurt Marathon,
where she bettered the course
record by nearly 90 seconds
with her time of 2:21:59, which
remains her personal best.

it was unexpected.
It came just three years
after Tollesa ran her first

was on the podium for the first
time when a time of 2:40:15

She clinched her first win
at the Marrakesh Marathon
in 2013 (2:36:05) but it was
in Frankfurt just three months
ago where she made her mark
winning in 2:23:12 after not
being considered one of the title
contenders. But after breaking
away at the 40km mark, she
held her nerve despite the
challenge from fellow Ethiopian

“I thought I could finish
among the first three since my
training had gone very well but
I never dreamed I would win,”
she said.

In 2010, Mekash travelled

which seems modest compared
to her present bests and future
targets. At the 2015 Frankfurt
Marathon in Germany, she
starred alongside compatriot

that saw victory go to Tollesa
- Mekash was given the same

Last year she also

her 2010 personal best, set in
Luxembourg, by just 12 seconds.
Since then she has gone
on to better her half marathon
best with a time of 1:11:22 in
New York in 2015 and will aim
to improve her marathon record
when she competes in Dubai for
the first time in 2016.

Marathon Best: 2:32:31
Marathon Best: 2:33:12
(12th Berlin, 2015)
(Amsterdam, 2014)
(Cape Town, 2015)
A renowned Polish runner
specialising in the 3000m
steeplechase, Kowalska
represented Poland at the 2008
and 2012 Olympic Games
and reached the final of the
2009 World Championships in
Athletics. She also competed
at the 2006 European Athletics
Championships and the
2007, 2009 and 2013 World
Championships.
She was Poland’s best
finisher at the 2010 IAAF World
Cross Country Championships
and has won numerous medals
at under-23 level, including two
golds at the European Athletics
U-23 Championships and a
bronze at the European Cross
Country Championships.
She represented Poland
at the 2008 Beijing Olympics,
but failed to progress beyond
the heats of the steeplechase.
Having recorded a new personal
best time of 9:26.93 in the
heats, Kowalska reached her
first global senior final at the
2009 World Championships in
Athletics and finished twelfth.
Set a new marathon
personal best with twelfth
place at the 2015 Berlin
Marathon, an improvement of
more than five minutes.
Megertu Ifa Geletu’s personal
best remains her time of
2:32:31 when finishing in a
creditable fourth place at the
Amsterdam Marathon in the
Netherlands in 2014.
Last year, she competed
in the 2015 Seoul International
Marathon in South Korea but
had to settle for eighth place
in 2:34:52, while in 2014 she
secured a podium place finishing
second at the Bucharest
Marathon in Romania.
In 2013, Geletu took
part in the inaugural Haikou
International Beach Marathon
10K, held on the 2.5km long
Holiday Beach in Haikou,
on southern China’s Hainan
Island. While Kenyan Rodah
Jepkorir Tanui took first in
42:50, Geletu was second in
44:01 in what was the largest
beach race of its kind in Asia,
attracting 402 professional
runners and amateurs from 21
countries and regions.
The 24 year-old Ethiopian
also has a Half Marathon
personal best of 1:11:25 set in
Verbania, Italy in 2011.
www.dubaimarathon.org
Kenyan-born but now
representing Bahrain,
Eunice Chumba is an Asian
Championship silver medalist who
comes to Dubai with a marathon
personal best of 2:33:12 set when
finishing second behind Isabella
Ochichi in Cape Town, South
Africa in 2015.
Chumba showed her class
at the Asian Championships
in Wuhan, China last year.
Competing in the 10,000m,
the 22 year-old claimed
second place and silver medal
behind the UAE’s Alia Saeed
in 32:44:57, some 22 seconds
outside her 10km personal best
of 32:22:29.
A relative newcomer at the
longer distance, Chumba will be
looking to gain more experience
in Dubai - her previous bests at
the classic distance aside from
that personal best and second
in South Africa are sixth place at
the Standard Chartered Hong
Kong Marathon (2:33:25) in
2013 and eighth at the Standard
Chartered Nairobi Marathon in
Kenya (2:38:58) in 2012.
