term: our Sports Days and STEAM week. Both events captured the
most of them from their Primary years and I was impressed and proud to
see how well they are developing into leaders of the future!
As we embark on our final term of the academic year there is an
emphasis on academic achievement as our students sit a variety of
assessments in May and June. Due to importance of this term please

SPORTS WEEK at SRS
The theme for this year’s Primary sports week was the 2017 World Athletics
Championships in London. Each year group represented a continent and had
the opportunity to select a country to represent for the day.

FS and KS1 Sports Day
On Monday 13th February Year 1 and 2 children and
Thursday 16th February FS1 and 2 children arrived at
school with excitement and anticipation of what the
day would hold for them. Today after weeks of practicing children could demonstrate their sporting
talents in the annual sports day.
The sports day ran on a carousel of activities, ranging
from sack races, egg and spoon race, obstacle races
and many more. The children competed with grit and
determination working hard until the last second of
every activity. All the children that took part in the
day received a certificate of participation to show
how proud of the efforts the children had put in.
Here are a few quotes from the students about the
day:
‘I had great fun, I really liked the obstacle race when
we had to go through the tunnel‘
‘My favourite part was running with a quoit on our
head and trying not to let it fall off’
‘Throwing the bean bags into the target hoops was
very hard but after a couple of goes I got 1 in’
A big thank you to all the parents that came down to
cheer children on and some even took part in the
parent and staff race.

KS2 Girls Sports Days
On Sunday 12th February and Wednesday 15th February, students
in Years 3-6 Year arrived at school full of energy and excitement
and ready to demonstrate their sporting prowess! Students and
teachers really got behind the theme for this year, using time in
their IPC lessons researching their selected country; everything
from its representative athletes and sporting success, to the
culture, language and history. Students also made a fantastic
effort this year creating banners, flags and accessories alongside
wearing brightly coloured clothes and face paint to support their
class.
In Key stage 2, all students participated in a fun sports carousel
with activities requiring speed, strength, agility and balance.
Every student also represented their class in an official event, such
as the javelin, standing long jump and the 75m sprint. Every
activity earned points for their class which meant for an exciting
end to a brilliant day. Congratulations to the following classes for
scoring the highest amount of points over all activities and
becoming sports day champions;

KS2 Boys Sports Days
KS2 Boys Sports Days proved a great success this year. Each student took part and completed various activities and challenges they
had previously learned in PE including Javelin, sprinting, basketball, throwing, problem solving and golf.
The most popular event by far was the Tug of War. The pupils (and sometimes parents and teachers) demonstrated their strength
and determination by attempting to pull the other team over the finish line.
The effort and enthusiasm demonstrated by each of the pupil was great to see as well as many of their sporting talents. I would like
to thank all of the children for their attitude and behaviour as well as all the staff who helped to create a successful couple of days.
SRS STEAM week was a huge success. Across the school it was a very busy week with
children taking a break from everyday class routines to concentrate on developing their
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math skills
Class Activities
Throughout the week classes in each year group participated in cross curricular activities.
Year 4 began building and designing their cars for the Formula 1 project. Each member of the
team had a role such as manager, graphic designer, resource manager, design engineer.
Teams will travel to Abu Dhabi in April to showcase their projects and race their cars.
Best of Luck!
Year 5 visited Ministry Science and participated in experiments in the key areas of Science
such as weight and mass they observed volcanoes erupting using toothpaste.
Year 2 designed their own equipment to go along with their space ships. They made food for
space, gravity boots, space suits and jet packs!
In FS2 they learnt about Humpty Dumpty, discovering which materials could save the egg.
They were busy testing the strength of various materials then dropped the eggs from the
stairs. Great fun was had by all! Some classes looked at the effects of mixing colours. Others
began developing their coding skills by giving directions to Beebots.
Projects
Part of this initiative involved children creating projects on a given theme. Thank you to all
the boys and girls who took part. Thank you to parents who spent time gathering items and
supporting your child in developing their skills.
HOMES FROM THE PAST
Year 1 task: Build a house from the past.
Year 1 are learning about The Great Fire of London, to tie in with this they
built tudor homes. Congratulations to the winning class 1 gold.
INVENTIONS TIME
SPACE SHIP TIME!
Year 2 task: Build a model space ship at home.
Many recycled materials were used to create rockets. Great research was
carried out by asking questions, searching the internet and exploring nonfiction books. Congratulations to the winning class 2 turquoise.
START ME UP
Year 3 task: Create an invention that improves the lives of humans or animals.
Year 3 showed their caring and considerate side with their projects. A charity
village was constructed with a hospital, school and homes for the less fortunate.
Hussain (3 yellow) loves cats so he made a solar panel home for his cat which
enabled them to keep cool in summer and warm in winter.
The class winners were 3 red. Not only did the class have the most projects but
judges found the ideas could prove very useful in the future. Rumaisa reused
clothes hangers to make a strong, durable seat. She told us how she had to use
her math skills to ensure it balanced. Judges were impressed
that each of the children could explain how
and why they made the projects.
Year 4 task: ‘Start me up’ create or draw a small circuit to power a bulb,
motor or buzzer.
This topic allowed children to build on their knowledge they have learnt in
class. Judges noticed how fantastic the children were at using the scientific
vocabulary. A personal favourite was Haziq’s project in 4 Red. He created a
money box that when taken made an alarm sound. This prevented anyone
from taking his savings. Congratulations to the winning class Year 4 White.
HOUSEHOLD HELPERS
ROLLERCOASTER!
Year 5 task: ‘Household Helpers’ children should come up with a solution to a
household problem.
Year 5 spoke to their parents at home and discovered items to make lives easier.
In 5 yellow multi-functional robots proved successful. Ayesha Mohammad
designed a hat which had a fire extinguisher, cleaning utensils, brushes and
more. Aly Rayed designed a self- watering plant which would prove useful when
travelling for long periods. These are definitely ones to watch out for in the
future. Congratulations to the winning class 5 yellow.
Y5
Year 6 task: Design your own rollercoaster using straws. It must transport a ping pong ball
from the start to the finish.
Creativity and teamwork were evident in Year 6 as they produced lots of new creations in
transporting the ping pong. Year 6 Red were the winners with everybody in their class
designing a rollercoaster. It was great to see all the children get involved in this project and
come up with some very creative ideas. Most of the children found it tricky to keep the
ping pong ball on the track; however, they realized that by creating a barrier it meant
speed and control could be maintained. Some children really showed their creative skills.
Huraiz designed a spiral rollercoaster which looked sensational, whilst Qais built his
standing up on a piece of card so itcould be hung from a wall.Excellent ideas were seen in
all classes!
