FAFSA for the 2017-2018 Academic Year will no longer be opening on January 1, 2017. It will now open on October 1, 2016. FAFSA opens October 1st for the next academic year (i.e., for 2017-2018 academic year, FAFSA opens October 1, 2016) Students will be able to use the income information from the year before (i.e., for the 2017-2018 school year, student will use their 2015 tax return) In order for students to get the Estimate Family Contribution (EFC) number earlier To allow more time to find financial means to pay the remainder amount of the funds needed for their schooling By the time FAFSA opens, student and their parents will have already submitted their tax returns; therefore, an estimate is no longer necessary Students can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to have the information automatically transferred to their FAFSA Students will need to put in the tax return they (or their parents) received from the previous year Even though students did their FAFSA for 2016-2017 school year with their 2015 tax return, they still must submit the 2017-2018 FAFSA with the information from the 2015 in order to qualify for financial aid. Remember the Federal Student Aid ID used; it will be needed every year (username and password). 2 Stephanie Andriuoli, SSS English & Writing Tutor “Welcome incoming and returning SSS Students! Schelomith Doirin Carla Juez Derrick Ryals Karen Gonzalez Vanessa Morales Ana Saint Louis Lina Gonzalez Chiante Reid Kimkhun Soeun Wedline Jean Tirelle Roberts Alejandra Vazquez “While attending FIU, becoming part of SSS was one of the best things that could've happened to me. I couldn't be more thankful for the opportunity of being part of this program, SSS not only helped me stay on track but also provided me with words of encouragement and services that helped me excel and exceed my expectations of getting through my classes. For those students in the program I would recommend to take advantage of all the tools and services they have to offer, stay in touch with the advisors and never ignore a doubt or concern that you may have, they always go out their way to find an answer; they are there to help you and guide you. “ - Lina Gonzalez Business at Sea “On May 8th, I went on a study abroad trip with the FIU’s School of Business to Portugal, Spain, and France for two weeks. The trip was meant to expand our knowledge on how business works internationally and different tactics that are used. Out of all the countries I visited, my favorite part of the trip was going to Lisbon, Portugal. The city was so vibrant and colorful and there was so much history for such a small country. This country was also the place I got the best souvenirs from! The trip will definitely benefit me in the future as I got an outlook from the cultures, the people, and the different lifestyles. I recommend every student to experience studying abroad at least once because it definitely gives you a different view of life and you will definitely want to explore the world more!” ~ Sedania Julmis 8 Study Abroad in Perugia, Italy “This summer I spent a little over a month in Perugia, Italy on study abroad. This program was centered around getting students immersed in the Italian culture in order to learn the language from authentic sources. While in Perugia I took classes at the university that was dedicated to teaching foreigners Italian. Every day I would walk to my class and sit amongst fellow students from all over the world and learn Italian. My teachers were the best! The classes were taught fully in Italian- I got lost a few times, but it became more manageable as I learned the language. Being in Perugia, was an experience like no other. Meeting new people, trying new foods, being a part of the culture- it was great. During the month of July in Perugia, a huge jazz festival comes to town for about two weeks. This festival is set up all over Perugia with big and small stages at several different spots. Each night different artistes would perform and people would just walk from one stage to the next to see different performers. There were even street performers just dancing, singing or playing instruments. There were even a couple clowns. This was my favorite part of the experience, just seeing all these performers that came from different countries to this small town just to perform. And many tourists came from all over just to see this festival as well. This was definitely a highlight of my experience. My time in Perugia was well spent. It taught me how to interact with strangers, how to be mindful of and respect cultures different from my own. As well as, it taught me how to be street smart- how to read maps and navigate without the constant use of technology and how to ask for help when needed. These are all useful skills that I can put to use in my future as I continue into my career and continue to travel the world. This experience took me way out of my comfort zone. It taught me how to make friends with people from different cultures and how not to be afraid of saying the wrong thing in a different language but rather learning from the mistake. It was frustrating at times not being able to fully comprehend conversations, sometimes I just stayed quiet because I was afraid of saying the wrong thing, but I overcame and soon learned to make mistakes and learn from them. I never imagined that I would be able to do study abroad- as a first generation college student and a minority, I had many challenges that I faced before embarking on this journey. I managed to overcome these with help from the Study Abroad Office. If you want to go abroad talk to them and they will be able to help you find scholarships and a program to fit your major. I loved my time abroad, it was an experience well worth it! If you have an opportunity to study abroad- take it. I can’t wait to do it again.” ~ Chantae Brown Study Abroad in Angers, France “Angers is located in Loire Valley (western, France). This is a 5 weeks immersion program where you learn about the French language and culture. I was able to stay with a French family, where breakfast and dinner was provided. This was the best way to really pick up on the French language and culture. This has been the best learning experience of my life. I was able to gain an invaluable experience and learn new things about other cultures as well as my own!! You get See new places (Eiffel tower) and make friends from around the world!! Why Not Study Abroad!!” ~ Sherine Metayer 9 France Study Abroad with Honors College “From July 1st to the 31st, I completed France study abroad with the Honors College where I had the chance to enhance my knowledge of France and its culture. The program is a one month program where students get to study art, war and human rights. Students learn about the French Revolution, World War II, and the parallelism between Americans and French etc. In addition, students get to travel across France to different places including Paris, Versailles, Lyon, Normandy and the Alps. When it comes to lodgment, each student gets their own dorm in Paris with their own bathroom and fridge. Meanwhile for the trips to other cities, which usually last two or three days, they get to stay with one or two other students of their choice. I truly enjoyed every single aspect of the program. What I loved the most about the class is the fact that I got to experience history by visiting the places that I learned about. I stood in Omaha beach, which is one of the beaches where D-Day occurred as I learned more about D-Day and World War II. I also love the fact that I got to meet courageous men that made an impact during World War II. I met Joseph Weismann, a holocaust survivor whose story has inspired the movie The Round Up. I got the opportunity to hear his story from him and I also got a signed copy of his book. Anyone can travel to France but not everyone gets the opportunity to meet some of the courageous and influential men that I had the pleasure of meeting. Meeting French resistance fighters and holocaust survivors made me reflect on who I am and taught me the importance of standing up to any injustice. It reinforced the idea that I am the future of this world and the decisions that I make can have an impact on the world whether it is positive or not. I enjoyed every single place that I visited because they each had their own uniqueness and beauty. Out of all the places I visited, the Alps has left the most impact on me; I loved every single part of it from the hike to the food. We stayed in the Alpine mountain range where they gave us local breakfast, lunch and dinner. They grow their own fruits and vegetables therefore the food was fresh and delicious. The hike to the Alps was my very first hike and it was a challenging but also a wonderful experience. It was not easy but once I reached the picturesque top, it was all worth it. For those of you that are considering study abroad, my advice to you is to do it. Don't hesitate and don't be afraid, you will not regret it. It is a unique and priceless experience. If I have the chance to complete it again, I definitely would.” ~ Schnaida Cazeau This summer many of our students completed internships both in and out of Miami. Want to have an internship next summer? Talk to Dr. Cruz and Mrs. Moira Lertora Chacon to learn what you can do to make it happen. Kevin Vergara at Philadelphia with PricewaterhouseCoopers “This past summer I had the opportunity to intern in Philadelphia with the accounting firm PwC. It was my first time being away from home which was scary at first but over time I came to love the freedom. At PwC, I shadowed staff from various areas of the company which helped me identify what I want to do once I graduate and begin working fulltime. While working, I was also able to bond with my fellow interns throughout the summer which helped create a community much like the one here at SSS. If you are looking for an internship, I highly recommend going to the various career fairs held at school, joining a school organization related to your field of interest, going to career services so that they can help you find companies that may interest you, and coming to the SSS office so you can receive feedback on your personal statements / resumes. I’m a business major so I joined ALPFA last year and that helped me make connections with professionals in the companies I wanted to work for.” 10 Are you interested in getting involved on campus?
