Directions for Using the Vowel Phonogram Chart: Our goal is for students to develop automaticity in identifying the sounds of vowel patterns. This knowledge assists students in successfully blending unknown words. The purpose of the Vowel Phonogram Chart is to give students daily repeated exposure to vowel patterns. The Vowel Phonogram Chart is a resource that has been made available for you to use. Steps: 1. Begin with short vowel patterns. Before using the Phonogram Chart, use the Phonogram Picture Cards to teach students the sounds of the short vowels. Phonogram Picture Cards use pictures as cues for identifying the vowel sounds. 2. After students have become proficient with the short vowels using picture cue cards, switch to the Phonogram Chart. As a quick daily review, point to the short vowel patterns and have students repeat after you (echo) the sounds of each pattern. Over time have students say the sounds along with you. (Suggestion: Have students say the sounds three times each so that students who are struggling can hear the sound the first time and then successfully say the sound the next two times.) 3. Move to long vowel patterns, following the same sequence as above. Before using the Phonogram Chart, use the Phonogram Picture Cards to teach students the sounds of the long vowels. 4. After students have become proficient with the long vowels using picture cue cards, switch to the Phonogram Chart. As a quick daily review, point to the long vowel patterns and have students repeat after you (echo) the sounds of each pattern. Over time have students say the sounds along with you. 5. Move on to other vowel patterns, following the same sequence as above. Before using the Phonogram Chart, use the Phonogram Picture Cards to teach students the other vowel sounds. 6. After students have become proficient with the other vowel sounds using picture cue cards, switch to the Phonogram Chart. As a quick daily review, point to the other vowel patterns and have students repeat after you (echo) the sounds of each pattern. Over time have students say the sounds along with you. Important Note: Do not review all the sounds on the entire chart every day! Some days you might review short and long vowel sounds, some days you might just review long vowel sounds, and some days you might just review some of the other vowel sounds. ©Davis School District Farmington, UT 2012-2013
