Unit Linked Funds How they work
Each unit linked fund is divided into a number of equal parts called 'units'. The contributions paid into a policy, less charges, are allocated to create new units and an amount equal to the value of those units is added to the fund. The income received on investments in the fund is reinvested to increase the value of the units. The value of the units also reflects changes in the capital value of the underlying investments. Depending on the fund, we value investments either daily or weekly and then calculate the unit prices. Whenever a payment is made from a policy, units are cancelled equal to the value being withdrawn from the fund. For more information, please see our guide to how we work out our unit prices on our website.
Prices and Charges
Charges are made on your policy to meet our costs and allow us to make a profit. There are two unit prices. You buy units at the higher price, which is known as the offer price. You sell units at the lower price, which is known as the bid price. The difference between the two prices is the 'initial charge', and is approximately 5% of the offer price. This does not apply to Stakeholder Pension Funds. There may be an annual charge, which is a regular amount that we take from the value of the fund, reducing the unit price.
