Happy 20th birthday to our Ferring shop
St Barnabas House charity shop in Ferring turned 20 recently and Worthing Town Crier, Bob
Smytherman helped us celebrate in his traditional and rousing way!
The shop, situated on the main street in Ferring, opened in 1996, and we celebrated its 20th
birthday with a tea party.
We were delighted that, among the many guests, The Chairman of Arun District Council, Cllr
Stephen Haymes, The Mayor of Worthing, Cllr Sean McDonald and Cllr Carole Robertson,
Chair of Ferring Parish Council joined staff, volunteers, customers and donors to celebrate.
Our CEO, Hugh Lowson, presented some of the shop volunteers with long service awards
including a 20 year badge to June Lockhart who has been a volunteer since it opened. There
were also 10 year badges awarded to Beris Collins and Kathleen Heasman and 5 year badges
awarded to Patricia Crook, Jennifer Panter, Sue Simmonds and John Withnell.
Shop Manager, Paula, Assistant, Wendy and the volunteers all helped make the day a great
success and brought in lots of tasty home-made cakes for everyone to enjoy with their cup
of tea! The stunning birthday cake, topped with a fondant teacup, was made by our Retail
Warehouse Manager, Karen Bentley, and cut by Cllr Haymes and June Lockhart, to mark the
occasion.
Last year alone, the Ferring shop team processed and sold over 55,000 items that were
generously donated by local people, and those funds paid for the running of all of the
operations at St Barnabas House for nine days last year.
The shop sells designer clothing, accessories, handbags, antiquarian books and bric-a-brac,
with many unusual and quirky items. Ferring is one of our furniture shops and can arrange
to collect and deliver larger items. Pop in next time you are in Ferring and say hello to Paula,
Wendy and this wonderful team.

June Lockhart - June joined as a Ferring shop volunteer on 22nd
October, 20 years ago, shortly after the shop opened. June’s regular
shift is a Saturday morning but she volunteers for us on other days if
she can. She is a member of many clubs including a choir and a U3A
group. June is a lovely chatty lady and it is a pleasure to work with her.

Beris Collins - Beris is a Wednesday afternoon volunteer with
a wicked sense of humour and usually arrives early for her shift,
armed with a tin of her ‘Tiffin’ cake.

about 4 years ago. We all think this was so that she could be nearer the
shop to volunteer for extra sessions! She is very calm, just what we need

Patricia Clark - Pat is a bubbly and chatty member of the team, volunteering
on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. She likes to host volunteer ‘get togethers’
at her home.
Jennifer Panter - Jenny volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays and, when
not camping at the weekends, often lends a hand on a Saturday afternoon.
However, we don’t see much of her in January and February as she is often
away on a long cruise, one of her favourite pastimes.

Visit India in 2018 for St Barnabas House
We are thrilled to announce we are launching St Barnabas House’s
third exclusive challenge event; the Dalai Lama India Trek from
18 – 29 October 2018.
Our team of explorers will begin their journey in Dharamsala where the Dalai Lama and
centre of the Tibetan community are situated before setting off into the peaceful and stunning
Himalayan mountain range. As part of this spectacular challenge, participants will be invited to
hang prayer flags at the highest point of our trek in Laka Got to celebrate the lives of loved
ones and all those cared for by St Barnabas House.
With peaceful and stunning views guaranteed, the
team will pass through the Kingdom of Gaddi – a
semi-nomadic race who spend months wandering the
high passes with their cattle, rhododendron forests,
Hindu settlements and Buddhist monasteries. The trip
will round off with an unmissable excursion to explore
the incomparable Taj Mahal – one of the world’s
greatest monuments to love ever built.

Littlehampton 10k on target to beat last year’s total
of £45,000 for Chestnut Tree House
Nicki Ifould from the Events Team would like to thank all staff and volunteers who gave up their Sunday
morning on 11 September to help at the 13th annual 10k Run. The event was a huge success and that
was thanks to the amazing team of people behind it.
“There was a big team of staff and volunteers who took part and ran it and it was great to have them
supporting the event too,” said Nicki.

Chestnut Tree House was delighted to welcome around 160 guests to Brighton’s newest attraction - British Airways i360
– on Thursday 8 September to celebrate the fifth anniversary of our Pay for a Day initiative.
Pay for a Day was originally suggested by local businessman, Mike Holland, giving donors the opportunity to pay for a
whole day of Chestnut Tree House’s care services, both at the hospice and in the community in families’ own homes, a
total of £6,850. Over the last five years, this has raised a staggering £1,980,000 which equates to enough money to pay
for 280 days of care. The initiative also includes Pay for an Hour, currently £285.
This fundraising campaign has made a huge difference to the services Chestnut Tree House is able to offer and develop,
enabling us to reach more children and establish the full care service right across the local area.
Many of the special Pay for a Day dates have been pledged by guests at our annual Snowman Spectacular Ball and, as
well as celebrating the success of Pay for a Day, we took the opportunity to launch this year’s Ball which will take place
on Saturday 3 December at the Hilton Brighton Metropole.
David Hill from E3 Events by Design, who are producing the Ball, was excited to announce that this year’s host will be
Danny Pike from BBC Radio Sussex and Surrey.
Danny said, “This will be a great kick-off to the festive season and will be a lot of fun. Just as importantly I’ll be getting
involved in raising money for a charity which is so close to many people’s lives in Sussex. Here’s to a great night!”

Robbie has raised donations to cover 169 days and 435 hours of care from generous donors at this prestigious event.
After a delicious buffet lunch in the stunning Belle Vue Brighton restaurant, most of the guests took the opportunity for
a flight in the world’s first vertical cable car, rising to 450 feet above the ground to take in the 360 degree breath-taking
views. Linda Perry, Director of Children’s Services at Chestnut Tree House, said, “Many of our guests have supported or
participated in our Pay for a Day initiative and the Snowman Spectacular Ball and thanks to their generosity we have
been abe to provide vital care and support to so many local children and families. I would also like to thank Eleanor Harris at the i360 for inviting us today and treating our guests to such an amazing experience.”

It has been a lovely summer - the Fun and Friendship
Team have been very busy, out and about organising
loads of different activities - trips to the cinema, and
our beach hut, bowling,Tilgate Park, speed boating
at Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth and of course our
summer Mad Hatter’s tea party and Mexican party.

The play workers have also been very busy over the summer holidays enjoying the sunshine
here in Sussex. The buses have been out and about taking the children to our beach hut in Goring
where we got our feet wet and collected shells, visiting Hotham Park seeing the squirrels and
riding on the train and several of our teenagers have enjoyed a coffee and people watching in
Worthing and Littlehampton. We even took one of our older lads to the pub!

Our St Barnabas charity shop in Wick kicked off the first of our retail shop events supporting
the ‘Big Get Together’ by holding a tea party on Saturday 3 September in the shop.
Manager, Michelle and her Assistant, Jan, together with their lovely team of volunteers,
decorated the shop and made tea and cakes for customers and guests. Entertainment was
provided by a professional local singer, ‘Sophie’, who also happens to be Michelle’s daughter! A
raffle was held and the event raised over £100 for St Barnabas as part of The Big Get Together,
supporting local hospice care.
St Barnabas is close to the hearts of Jan and her family. Jan’s husband passed away in St
Barnabas two years ago and her family (pictured) attended the event, with her daughter, Emma,
making some of the cakes and dying her hair blue in support!
Michelle said,“Thank you to everyone who came
along to support the event. We all had
a great afternoon. Many of the cakes
had been made by volunteers and were
fantastic!”

Broadwater St Barnabas shop celebrate volunteers

Our Broadwater shop recently awarded five year badges
to their longstanding volunteers. Anna Davis, David
Blanchard, John Forte and Maggie Rysdale have been with
us for five years and Gillian Coxley and Freda Bussey have
been with us for six years. Together with Shop Manager,
Tina Oliver, current volunteer Mary Smart and new
volunteer, Katy Morrey, they all celebrated with tea and

St Barnabas Rustington shop bake off!
Four local schoolgirls, Maisie Smart, Ellie Gale, Chloe Dunlop and Izzy
Northeast, held a bake sale outside the Rustington shop in August
during their summer holidays. They raised £200 selling cakes, and at
one point they sold two cheese sticks for £20! It was great fun and we
had a great day at the shop. Well done girls and a very big thank you.

rehabilitation initiatives, we will shortly be recruiting to a team lead post for the newly created Therapy
& Support Team. Eventually overseeing a team of therapists and volunteers, this post holder will have line
management responsibility for all day services based at St Barnabas House (Therapy & Support Service, Day
Hospice and Outpatients) as well as the Hospice Outreach Project.

Hospice Care Week
Hospice Care Week takes place every year and is a week of activity aimed at raising
awareness of hospice care across the UK. This year’s Hospice Care Week took place
from 3-9 October with the theme being “Hospice care is…”
We put together some of the less well known facts about hospice care to help try and
dispel some of the myths around hospices being sad places – please see next page.
We also interviewed a number of people – patients, volunteers and staff - about what
hospice care means to them and the interviews were used on local radio station, More FM,
and on our social media platforms.

Dispelling the myths
Seven of the less well-known facts about hospice care
1. Hospice care is… not just for people with cancer
St Barnabas House has recently created a new specialist nursing service with four
new dedicated nurse specialists who will be working across key areas of care.
Our new nurses will ensure we are able to provide specialist care for patients with
Renal Failure, Liver Failure and Heart Failure, and improve our existing services to
meet the needs of people living with Dementia.
We are very proud to be leading the way as one of the first UK hospices to bring in
such specialist staff.
2. Hospice care is… absolutely free and only partially funded by the NHS
Did you know that all of the services provided by St Barnabas House are absolutely
free of charge, but we only receive 21% statutory funding?
Most of the £5.9 million it costs to provide all of our care services throughout the
year comes from fundraising and through people’s donations.
3. Hospice care is… not just based around a building
During the mid-1960s, when Dr Gusterson first proposed the idea of St Barnabas
a high number of cancer deaths occurred in the area and people would generally
come to the hospice for the end of their lives.
Since then, developments in healthcare have enabled an increasing number of
people to live comfortably to the end of their lives in their own homes.
In 2012 we launched our Hospice at Home service, and last year we were able to
provide “hands on care” at home for 429 patients, providing 5,690 hours of care in
the local community, plus an additional 3,717 hours night visits.
4. Hospice care is… not just for those in their final days
Over many years we have developed our hospice care services to enable us to
provide care and support for those who aren’t just in their final days.
Our Day Hospice provides respite care for the day with a range of activities and
social events for people with life-limiting conditions at various different stages.
It provides an informal setting for mutual support, enhancing confidence and
wellbeing.
On some occasions people will come into our In-patient Unit and their condition
will improve enough for them to be discharged.
It also doesn’t matter how old you are, whether you’re 18 or 98, the care services
we provide are available to any adult with an advanced life-limiting condition or
terminal illness who needs our help.
5. Hospice care is… about supporting the whole family
We know how difficult a time it can be when a family member or someone close
to you is diagnosed with a serious illness. It can be a distressing, frightening and
lonely time, which leaves you with a sense of helplessness and loss of control.
There are a whole range of different services we provide to support the families
of those we care for, including counselling, chaplaincy, bereavement support and
our Carers Group.

6. Hospice care is… about creating special memories
It’s easy to think that the final few days, weeks or months of life is about
reminiscing about the past, but at St Barnabas House we always look to provide
special memories and experiences for the people we care for.
For example, we were recently visited by a group of Harley Davidsons. For one
lady from Day Hospice in particular, this was a truly special experience as she
used to be a rocker and had not been on a Harley Davidson in over 30 years.
7. Hospice care is… about living, not dying
As much as hospice care is about providing care for those with terminal
illnesses, it is also about ensuring that those people are able to live their lives as
fully as possible.
‘Wellbeing’ is the name we give to rehabilitative palliative care – enabling
patients not to simply continue living, but to maximise their physical and mental
health; giving them the chance to achieve a better quality of life, for longer.
To enable this, we have to reach people earlier, so we will be promoting St
Barnabas’ rehabilitative care service as soon as possible following a diagnosis.
Over the next few years, we will continue to develop our internal clinical and support service
to improve the experience of those we care for.

Hospice Care Week!
South Downs Trek
This year saw our second, 20-mile South Downs Trek from Devil’s Dyke back to
St Barnabas hospice, with a fantastic 100 walkers taking part and raising £40,000
for the hospice.
The Big Get Together
We invited our supporters to take part in an exciting new event this year called The
Big Get Together. All they had to do was to hold a night in during October and ask
their guests to make a donation to St Barnabas House and a number of them took
up the challenge.
Will Writing Appeal
Throughout October a number of local solicitors generously agreed to offer
appointments to write or update Wills, in return for a donation to St Barnabas
House.

We also had a number of community events taking place including the Northbrook Friends evening of
opera and food at Casa Ciro – many thanks to them for organising it!

South Downs Trek
Walkers set to raise over £40,000 for St Barnabas House
Over 100 walkers, took part in the South Downs Trek on Saturday 8 October, raising over
£40,000 for the hospice. The event, now in its second year, drew Hospice Care Week to a
close.
Walkers set off from Devil’s Dyke at approximately 8am, trekking 21 miles across the rolling
hills of the South Downs, before finishing at St Barnabas House where they celebrated with
a glass of bubbly.
Lucy Curtis, 42, from East Preston was the first to cross the finish line shortly before 2pm,
completing the trek in just under six hours. Lucy said: “It was a very good event for a very
worthwhile cause. A couple of my friends’ fathers spent their last days at St Barnabas House
and everyone says how lovely it is.”
There were several teams taking part, including nine wallkers from Eurotherm by SchneiderElectric. Eurotherm have supported St Barnabas House as one of their Charities of the Year
for the last four years. Team leader Lisa Bant said: “We sadly lost a work colleague, John
Townsend, who passed away peacefully at St Barnabas at the beginning of October. With
the blessing of his family we dedicated our walk on Saturday to John.”
Valerie Manor nursing home, Upper Beeding entered a team of five, Zoe Bates, Catherine
Henderson and her husband Andrew, Mike Slator and his wife Sarah. Zoe said: “We had a
lovely day - St Barnabas support not only our residents, but the staff as well. We do a lot of

Participants in the trek spanned 55 years, from Ben Taylor, 14, to Peter Cook, 69.
A number of St Barnabas House staff and volunteers also completed the trek. They included
the CEO Hugh Lowson, Chairman Derwyn Jones, Trustees Mark Milling and Maggie Davies,
Staff Nurses Ann Walker and Justine Matthews and Community Fundraiser Mary Bye.
Our new President, Lord Henry, Earl of Arundel, also took part in the trek with his wife Cecilia
Colacicchi.
Nicky Ifould, Events and Campaigns Fundraiser, said: “For the second year running the South
Downs Trek was a great success, raising a great amount of money for St Barnabas House. I
would like to say a big thank you to all trekkers and the fantastic volunteers who supported
the event.”

Harley Davidson’s visit
The Hogsback Chapter Harley Owners Group recently made their annual visit to the hospice. On
Thursday 8 September the riders arrived to the sound of roaring engines, and were greeted by the
Day Hospice and also some patients from the IPU, as well as staff and volunteers.
It was a truly special moment for Valerie Wilson from Upper Beeding who has been attending the
Day Hospice since December 2015. The Harley Davidson’s visit brought back fond memories of her
younger years. “It was absolutely brilliant,” she said. “I haven’t been on one for over 30 years and I
was originally a rocker so this was really, really good and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The bikers were
brilliant. They were so friendly and accommodating and it was even better than I thought it was
going to be. My thanks go to the hospice for organising it.”
Paul Taylor, Hogsback Chapter Road Marshal and lead rider for the day, commented that it was a
pleasure to visit the hospice for the third year running. He said: “It excites people when they see
the bikes and hear the noise. You see the joy on everyone’s faces when we turn up and it’s just
terrific to see.”
Julie Morrison, Day Hospice Activity Co-ordinator, said: “It was lovely to see the smiles on patients’
faces and watch them sit on the bikes. It brings a lot of memories back whether you’re a biker or
not - Thank you Hogsback Chapter - See you next year!”

Day Hospice Cruise Week (12 to 16 September))
The Day Hospice was decorated in four European country themes in September and guests were
given home-made passports and entertained by nursing and volunteer teams in traditional dress.
On Wednesday patients were visited by Helena “La Leyenda” who entertained them with some
traditional Spanish flamenco dancing. On Thursday Jane Curtis performed traditional French music
on the accordion, and on the final day they enjoyed Italian signing by Jessica De Giudici.

Chestnut to Paris Cycle
Cyclists cover 200 miles to Paris in aid of
Chestnut Tree House
Seventeen people from across the county recently took part in the first ever 200-mile
Chestnut to Paris cycle ride for Chestnut Tree House. Our Patron and Olympic gold
medallist, Sally Gunnell OBE, was also part of the team and provided lots of motivation along
the way.
There was a wonderful send off from the hospice on Thursday 6 October, and many of
the staff and volunteers came out to wave the riders off. Sally gave the team some rousing
words of inspiration before they set off through the Angmering Park Estate.
The first leg of the challenge was the 40 mile stretch from Chestnut Tree House to
Portsmouth, which the team covered in an impressive four and a half hours.
Following the overnight sailing from Portsmouth to Caen, day two started early with the
cyclists landing in France before dawn had even broken. After a five mile sunrise cycle ride,
there was a delicious breakfast waiting for them at the Pegasus Bridge. This bridge is steeped
in history as a strategic stronghold for the D-Day Landings in June 1944.
From Caen, the team cycled through beautiful French countryside, tackling steep hills and
descents, and open plains with no shelter from the very chilly wind. After a gruelling 94
miles, the team were very happy to arrive in Evreux for the night. Many of the participants
were delighted to find the hotel rooms had bath tubs, and many aching muscles enjoyed a
well-deserved hot soak!
After a hearty breakfast on the third and final day, the team set off nice and early again. The
route took them through more countryside before hitting the suburbs of Paris in the early
afternoon. After just over 70 miles, the team regrouped at the Louvre, before making their
final approach to the Eiffel Tower and crossing the finish line all together. They were greeted
at the finishing line with a glass of bubbly and cheers.
Events Fundraiser, Kerry O’Neill said, “We are so grateful to all the cyclists who took part
in our first ever Chestnut to Paris cycle ride and it looks like we are on track to raise
around £30,000 which is the equivalent of four days of care, both at the hospice and in the
community in families’ own homes across Sussex and South East Hampshire. Everyone did
so well and the team spirit was fantastic.”
Thanks to our very own Ben Hall,Voluntary Services Administrator, who completed the
cycle challenge dressed as a parrot and has raised nearly £2,000 – well done Ben!

love the atmosphere here, it’s

Gaynor said, “I really enjoy meeting
people and helping where I can. It’s
a lovely place to be, everyone is so
friendly.”
Carol Ockenden has been a
Flower volunteer here at the
hospice for four years.
Carol said, “I find volunteering
here one of the most rewarding
things I have ever done. I love
flower arranging so I get to
indulge my passion whilst
making people here happy.”
