Our annual report reflects the profound evidence of your commitment to bringing superior health care to eastern North Carolina.
Many gifts—large, small and in so many other ways—represent incredible sacrifices while others share passion, power and leadership
to advance our shared goals.

Dear Friends,
I’m delighted to share with you our annual report for 2015-16, a truly amazing year. All across eastern
North Carolina, your gifts are transforming lives and giving new hope to families, neighbors and
friends. For this reason, our report this year follows the theme, “We are Grateful.” Literally thousands
of individuals have much to be thankful for, thanks to your support.
In the world of philanthropy, we often measure success in the form of dollars raised, the number of
gifts or other yardsticks. In health care philanthropy, it’s important to realize there are real people
behind these numbers. There are people who are sharing selflessly to give a chance at life to people
they don’t know and probably will never meet.
In this year’s report, you’ll meet a physician couple in Ahoskie, who along with their 10-year-old twin
sons, have made a five-year donation supporting cancer care at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. And, because we all know healing
has a faith component, you’ll want to read about Denise Edmondson’s support for creating a chapel, family room and courtyard at
Vidant Bertie Hospital. We’re also pleased to highlight the Taylor family’s gift to the Vidant Cancer Care campaign, one of many over
the years.
Again this year, Vidant Health employees inspired us all with their generosity. A growing number are giving at orientation, before
they’ve even received their first paycheck. Some are continuing a decades-long tradition of giving bi-weekly through payroll deduction.
Others are memorializing someone special through our Lights of Love program.
Healing people and making them whole again is a tremendous part of what Vidant Health does every day. Equally important, we’re
working to prevent disease and help people live the healthiest life they can to avoid a hospital visit. These outreach efforts are made
possible through our Community Benefits Grants Program. You’ll be inspired to read of 142 grants totaling more than $2 million
awarded last year to worthwhile, health-focused programs throughout the region. They’re making a difference in communities near and
far, including Conetoe, Windsor, Murfreesboro and Ocracoke.
The impact of your collective gifts over the years makes it exceedingly difficult for me to announce my retirement in March. I came
here 28 years ago when Pitt County Memorial Hospital was a 600-bed stand-alone hospital. Today, 909-bed Vidant Medical Center is
at the geographic center of a health system whose phenomenal growth has been spurred by a clear, uncompromising mission to serve
the health care needs of this region. Your gifts have helped keep this mission alive and for that I am beyond grateful.
Here’s to an even brighter future, fueled by your generosity.

We are GRATEFUL for a shared vision of hope
A Family Gives Together
The Taylors—Etta, Donald and Jackie, Ronald and Nan, and their families—support the new Cancer Center with a
shared vision of hope
A family touched by cancer, and the uncertainty it brings, wants to make the experience less stressful for others in their community
and beyond.
The Taylor Family of Greenville has a long tradition of supporting the medical center and its programs, and when they had the chance
to help build a new treatment center for the disease, they were all in.
Led by mom and cancer survivor Etta, with her sons Donald and Ronald, and their families, the Taylors hope their support will change
life for cancer patients throughout the region. That hope begins with early diagnosis, like the one that saved Etta’s life.
“I was fortunate to have found it so early,” she says, gratefully looking back on the experience three years ago. She personally knows
what it means to struggle through cancer, with its unknowns and emotional ups and downs. She is deeply committed to helping open
this advanced center to the community, where it will improve life for people of all ages, with all types of cancer. Her commitment,
like that of her family, goes beyond her own personal awareness, and expresses her vision for this place where all people can find the
newest technology in a comforting setting. “Even without having

“When you get involved, you know you’re doing something for the community,” Donald says. Their gift to the Heart Institute elevated
their commitment to bringing life-saving care to their community.
“Greenville and East Carolina University needed the support of the community,” Ronald Taylor says. Having heart care in their own
community brought an end to traveling long distances for treatment. Together, the family provided funding for several catheterization
labs. “People were having to go to other places.”
With their support of the cancer center, they want to improve the outlook for people struggling with that disease. That means bringing
services together in a single location, as well as offering the healing surroundings that have been shown to improve recovery.
Their giving springs from a desire to help ease the pain and burden on other families who are struggling with the disease, reminded as
they are that nearly everyone is affected by cancer. Nan believes their gift and the center will save lives.
“With earlier detection, and local services, survival will increase,” Nan says.
In addition to Etta’s experience, other family members have suffered because of it. Their experiences have inspired the family to
support this project to make a difference—for everyone.
“All of us have family members who have died of cancer,” Jackie Taylor says. “Cancer touches everybody. This cancer center is going
to mean so much for eastern North Carolina, which has one of the highest rates of cancer in the country. It will be a world-class
treatment center.”

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals
We are GRATEFUL for those who pay it forward
September 8, 2010, is the date that changed Clay and Marcie Parker’s life forever. Their 2 year old son, Bryson, was diagnosed with a
Wilm’s tumor, which is a rare form of kidney cancer. Clay, a family nurse practitioner in the transitional care unit at James and Connie
Maynard Children’s Hospital suddenly found himself on the receiving side of care. Bryson had to undergo surgery to have one of his
kidneys removed and he underwent several months of chemotherapy and other treatments at the children’s hospital.
It became very important to the Parker’s to do something to show their support for the care their son received.
The following year, they began participating in the Change Bandits program through the annual Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals
radiothon and decided to put together a special event to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals program. The Parkers hosted
an event at their home. They invited family and friends to a backyard barbecue, where they enjoyed games, a silent auction, food
and good company. In return, their guests could make a contribution to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. From this backyard
barbeque, Bryson’s Birdies for Kids was formed.
Bryson’s Birdies for Kids has grown from this backyard barbeque to a two-day event with dinner, dancing, silent and live auctions on
Friday night and golf on Saturday. In 2016, Bryson’s Birdies raised $33,000 bringing their collective total over the past six years
to more than $100,000. Bryson’s Birdies for Kids has an incredible committee that assists in their event every year. In addition,
Ironwood Golf & Country Club has co-sponsored the event for the past several years.
The Parkers are forever grateful for the hospital and care their son received. They say they can never put a monetary value on what
they received but their mission is to “strive to make every effort possible to pass it along to families undergoing the same situations
that mine did,” says Clay.
Clay and Marcie have three other children, Layne, Chase and Reese.
[We] strive to make every effort possible to pass it along to families
undergoing the same situations that mine did.

Vidant Bertie Hospital Development Council
We are GRATEFUL for a compassionate heart
Denise Edmondson, Nurse Case Manager at Vidant Bertie Hospital, has become a staunch advocate of Advance Care Planning and
End of Life conversations. She has been meeting with patients and their families, in conjunction with her other case management
duties, to have these difficult conversations and to discuss end-of-life decisions. Denise was often frustrated that there was simply not
an appropriate place at Vidant Bertie to talk with patients and their loved ones about such an extremely important matter. When she
learned about the plans to add a chapel and family room to the hospital, one of Denise’s first thoughts was, “Finally, there will be
somewhere to discuss end-of-life care planning in private!” Since the Vidant Bertie Hospital Development Council began raising
funds for the chapel, family room, and courtyard, Denise has consistently contributed to the project. Denise has given generously—
from the heart.
...patients, their family members and the hospital staff continue to
benefit from her compassionate and charitable heart.
Since the ribbon-cutting for the Robert B. Spivey Chapel and the Perdue Farms Family Room on March 23, 2016, barely a day has gone
by that Denise has not used the lovely, tranquil and spiritual spaces to meet with families during difficult times. She also seeks the
peace of the chapel often—just to be alone for a few minutes—when she needs some personal quiet time to reflect.
The chapel, family room, and courtyard were made possible, in part, from the generous support of many community businesses,
churches, and individuals, not to mention Vidant Bertie staff members, and employees from through-out the Vidant system.
Denise Edmondson is a wonderful example of someone who “cares local and gives local.” The Vidant Bertie Hospital patients, their
family members and the hospital staff continue to benefit from her compassionate and charitable heart.

Chowan Hospital Foundation
We are GRATEFUL for caring young people
It was a couple of weeks before Christmas. The neighborhood was gearing up for Christmas, with houses and yards decorated with
lights, greenery, and red and green bows. Christmas trees, with presents piled underneath, sparkled in the windows. Everyone was filled
with the holiday spirit. Everyone, that is, except Emma.
Emma’s grandmother and her next door neighbor were in the hospital. This was not supposed to be happening at Christmas. Emma
wanted to do something, something to help her grandmother and her neighbor. Something to help the hospital that was making them
well. But, what to do? Emma got together with her friends in the neighborhood and came up with an idea…
A week or so later, a call came to the Executive Director of Chowan Hospital Foundation. “There is a group of children selling
handmade bracelets and other jewelry at Edenton Lake and Harbor. They are dressed up and really working hard to raise money for
Vidant Chowan Hospital. You’ve got to see this!”
Sure enough, there they were…11 children, some wearing various reindeer and Santa paraphernalia (and most in sock or bare feet
since it was very warm!) And, indeed, they were working hard. When a car would drive around the circle, they lined both side of the
street (and yes, they may have even jumped into the middle of the street) and waved their signs and arms to alert the driver of the
wonderful “must haves” they should buy for Christmas presents that would also help Vidant Chowan. It was a very effective system, to
say the least. At the end of the day, the group of caring young people had raised over $160 to help Vidant Chowan Hospital.

Vidant Health’s Vision Statement is “To become the national model for rural health and wellness by creating a premier, trusted
health care delivery and education system.” From a Foundation perspective, the “rural health and wellness” phrase in the vision
statement gives each of Vidant Health’s community hospital development councils or foundations a unique opportunity to develop special
relationships within their own rural communities—especially through the Community Benefits grants program.
At Vidant Duplin Hospital, the grants program has enabled its Foundation—and by extension the hospital—to initiate and nurture
partnerships with many small volunteer, non-profit community organizations, as well as towns and municipalities. Duplin County, one
of the state’s largest agricultural counties, has no town with a population greater than 4,000. Each town and community is proud of
and enjoys its own identity. One of these communities is the town of Greenevers with a population of approximately 650, about 85% of
which is African-American.
4Brothers Community Outreach is a non-profit formed this past year by four young men in Greenevers who saw a need to serve their
community, particularly its youth, through education and mentorship programs. The “brothers” who founded the organization are Harry
Sutton, Jr., Keith Brinson, Bruce McCallop and John Carr. All are friends, and Harry and Keith were classmates at the local high school.
With a main focus of addressing the needs of K-8th grade youth, the group’s first project was a “backpack buddies” event before school
began this fall, helping to provide needed school supplies to elementary and middle-schoolers for the upcoming year. They have also
provided volunteers throughout the year to offer tutoring and mentoring to students after school.

Vidant Edgecombe Hospital Development Council
We are GRATEFUL for “friendraising”
Fundraising? Friendraising? Vidant Edgecombe Hospital likes to think of their annual gala as both. This spring gala is the hospital’s
signature event of the year, raising money to help fund significant projects within the hospital.
2016 was the third of a three year commitment to use gala proceeds for cancer services at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital. With great
support from donors, individual and corporate sponsors, ticket sales and silent auction sales, net proceeds provided a gift of $100,000
to the construction costs of the new Cancer Center that will be built in 2017.
A formal capital campaign began in 2016 to begin fundraising for the new cancer center. This new cancer facility will feature eight
infusion bays facing a tranquil healing garden for patients to gaze upon while receiving treatment, two private infusion rooms that also
face the healing garden, treatment and exam rooms, nurse’s station directly across from the infusion areas, waiting room, conference
room, and an image renewal and resource room. Currently there is a cancer center at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital, but unfortunately
Edgecombe County has far outgrown the use of this facility, and the hospital is in need of a larger area to provide care for their patients.
Donors, both individuals and corporate, have supported the Vidant Edgecombe Hospital gala for many years, and continue to support
this event for many reasons. “We look forward to the hospital gala every year,” said Mrs. Ginger Taylor. “Not only is it a chance for my

The Outer Banks Hospital Development Council
We are GRATEFUL for growth and development
In 2002, Carol and Ed Cowell left behind their urban existence outside of Washington D.C. to retire to North Carolina’s Outer Banks, a
small, warm, and welcoming community. Over time, Carol and Ed began to donate their time, talent, and treasure to help support the
community they love, while helping their fellow neighbors in need.
“We can’t always give as much as we want to, but we enjoy keeping track of the work that nonprofits are doing to serve our community,”
said Carol, who, along with her husband, firmly believe that a major benefit of living in a small town is having a deeper understanding
of what is going on in that community.
Over the past 15 years, Carol and Ed have been exposed to the many resources and programs offered by The Outer Banks Hospital
and continue to be impressed with the hospital’s program growth and development, as well as its vision for the future. Because of this
vision, Carol and Ed recently donated to The Outer Banks Hospital Development Council.
“The Outer Banks Hospital is growing and making an impact on the healthcare in this community. We’ve experienced it ourselves
and have seen it among our friends. And, we wanted to help make a difference,” Carol continued. “To think there was no hospital here
when we purchased our lot in 1997,” she reminisced.

The Outer Banks Hospital – The Cowells continued
Carol and Ed have shown past support for the breast cancer programs offered by The Outer Banks Hospital, and in 2016, the Cowells
decided to show an even deeper support for all of the cancer programs and services at The Outer Banks Hospital.
“We hope to continue our support of the efforts of our community hospital for a long time to come,” Carol added.

Roanoke-Chowan Foundation
We are GRATEFUL for local services and programs
Pat Thornton, RN, patient navigator, helps patients and their families ‘navigate’ the difficult pathways to receive assistance following a cancer diagnosis.
Cancer is a diagnosis that can bring families and friends together in times of need. When the Roanoke-Chowan community learned
that Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital had a need to expand cancer services, they came together in support for hope.
“We recognized the critical need for a new healing environment for our local patients with cancer,” states Sandra Woodard, director of
development at the hospital. “The Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital’s Directors’ Council established an ambitious fundraising goal of
$250,000 to make a new cancer center possible.”
A donor campaign was initially kicked off with a ‘Hosts for the Hospital’ event in local community members’ homes. A formal
‘cultivation event’ was held in November 2015 for potential donors to share giving opportunities in the areas of cancer care services.
The Vidant Wellness Center-Ahoskie dedicated funds raised from the annual 5K Run during Ahoskie Heritage Days. Employees have
given to the cancer care fund through the employee giving campaign annually.
In 2014, the Hospital dedicated the new cancer care center. Designed with input from patient and family advisors, the new
center is spacious enough to accommodate more patients with shorter wait times for treatment.
Maria, a patient who has battled cancer for some time, would have traveled out of town to receive the same services she can now have
closer to home. “This is one of the best things to happen at our local hospital,” she remarked on her way to the cancer center one day.
The addition of a patient navigator for cancer care patients has been welcomed by all. An experienced cancer care nurse meets with
patients and assists with resources including medication and transportation assistance. She also opens doors to enhance the programs
offered to breast cancer patients.
“We have been so pleased with the response from local donors,” said Woodard. “The Ahoskie Garden Club led efforts to design and
plant a ‘garden of hope’ right outside of the windows in the new cancer care center.”
Recognition opportunities in memory or honor of a loved one with cancer were
made possible and local business/industries responded by naming exam rooms
and treatment chairs. When the Cancer Center Donor Wall ‘Reveal’ event was
held in 2016 to celebrate over $100,000 in contributions from over 60 community
members and area organizations, two cancer care patients gave personal
testimonials about how much they had been helped locally to receive services.
Efforts continue with the renovations of the radiation oncology department (in
a separate building) scheduled to re-open in 2017 bringing the latest advances in
radiation therapy for patients.
Dr. Madhu Parmar and Dr. Jamie Udwadia, two
members of the Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital
One family member summed it up by saying, “I feel so blessed that Vidant
medical staff, along with their two boys, Arjan and

Vidant Wellness Center – 5 K Run - Heritage Day
Shepard Cancer Foundation
We are GRATEFUL for parties with a purpose
For the past seven years the small creek side community of Smithton (south of Belhaven) has been “making their own party”—and
each year the party becomes more lively and meaningful. The “party” they make is called the Darleen’s Flamingo 5K—the person it’s
meant to honor and pay tribute to is Linda Darleen Smith. In 2005, Darleen began a 5 year battle with breast cancer. During that time
she continued to work at Northeast Elementary School as the Media Coordinator/Librarian while she enjoyed life with her family and
friends on her cherished Pungo Creek. Darleen’s life motto was simply put—“You make your own party” and she did, until she lost her
courageous fight with cancer in April of 2010 at the age of 59.
Since then, each year for one Saturday in October the close-knit community comes to life in her honor, not just to throw a party, but to
fulfill a mission—a mission to continue the fight Darleen started against cancer. Over the summer of 2010, the Smith family decided to
hold an event to honor their mother, wife, sister, aunt, and friend while raising awareness of cancer. The family appropriately decided
to host a 5K so they could share the waterfront community she loved so much with others. Darleen’s friends, family and neighbors
coupled two aspects of her life into planning their annual party for their beloved Darleen—her zest for life and her fondness for pink
flamingos. In support of the fight against cancer, runners and walkers arrive early suited up in bright pink from head to toe as they set
out to take in the 5K course lined with pink flamingos and gorgeous water views.
Seven years later, Darleen’s Flamingo 5K continues to surpass all expectations. Each year the annual event attracts more racers of
all ages. At the recent 2016 race, 157 runners/walkers crossed the finish line. While 50 spirited volunteers assembled to host the
neighborhood 5K. Darleen’s daughter, Nikki Klapp said she and her family are humbled by the increased, continued support each year
