And then there was just the boring line of cars advertising. After 26.2 miles of hard running the runners finish down at Madeira drive. To complete the marathon is a fantastic achievement. Do you know if any of the teachers have done the marathon? Why don’t you ask? Book Recommendations Eva Noble James Page Here are some brilliant book recommendations for all reading levels. I love the feel of the smooth ground bumping up and down against my feet. But my favourite part has to be when you push the continuous ground with your foot and the wind breezes past your face and you feel like a race car driver when they just won the fastest most exhilarating race ever! If you have never experienced this spectacular feeling I definitely recommend that you try out a penny board. If you are very interesting in buying a penny board I would suggest going to your local skating shop and get the equipment. You must make sure though that you wear the appropriate gear. You will need – a helmet, knee pads, ankle protectors, wrist protectors (and or fingerless gloves), elbow pads and skating shoes (I recommend Nike). If you ask in the shop they will tell what part of the selection are skating shoes. Remember to be very careful though when riding a penny board. Even though the outcome can be very thrilling, you must make sure that you are riding carefully and never do something that is out of your comfort zone. 14 Awesome Disney Facts 1. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lip stick, they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the maintenance man would remove them, and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night. To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. Creative Writing Angelica Lawson Lately I have been writing a dramatic and exciting story about children trying to escape from an orphanage to have a new beginning and a better meaning to life. Nine children set foot outside the orphanage, Halima, who is 13, leads the group of other children to safety, but can she always be trusted? I have been inspired by watching The Dumping Ground on CBBC (this is where I got the idea of an orphanage/care home). I just asked my mum for a random number between 6 and 13 and she chose 9 (this is where I got the number of children in the story). I searched up a website which had unusual children’s names (I chose from a range of names; the 9 I chose were because of their meanings and traits that came with them as I thought they were interesting). From the traits and meanings that came with their names I began to create my characters, I drew out how I thought each character would look like if they were real. I would say that it is usually easier to find out what you want to write about and make notes and then come up with the title afterwards as it is usually hard to think of one. I started by writing an overall summery. I then began at the night of the escape, I worked from then on developing my story using other stories for inspiration. This is a small extract from my story so far… The children completed packing their rucksacks and just as Halima and Jiro started leading the pack down the spiral staircase they heard a rumble coming from outside. Halima ran as quickly as possible back into the room and leant on the windowsill to steady herself. OH no, she gasped. It was not Mr Hungret (the usual careworker) instead it was Miss Sniper! DUN DUN DUN! Miss Sniper is the worst person to take charge of Earywood. She does not tell you where the other care workers are, whether they are ill, on holiday or what. She locks every cupboard in the house so that no one can eat biscuits or anything without her permission like usual. Thank you for reading my article… The Tea James Page (This story is about a cup of tea that is spilled and transfigures into human form. It was also entered into a competition about tea.) “What was the tea doing?” He wondered. It was moving. He was sure of that. But where to, he wasn’t so sure of that. How it was moving, even more so. But what he really wondered it was moving was how its liquid form could take the form of a human shape. Why it was like that. He’d knocked it over and splashed on the floor, then the tea had climbed up the table leg. Then the kitchen counter. He had picked the telephone but the tea man had electrocuted it. So he stared at it and wished it went back to the cup from which it had originated. To find someone else. He left the kitchen and tried to find the source which had created it. Maybe it was the sci-fi thriller he was watching. Perhaps it was the radio in the kitchen. Or the solar eclipse today. It could be that the neighbour next door had the power of voodoo or sorcery; she was from China after all. But that was an unlikely solution, so he settled on the eclipse - that it was an after effect of it. While he was thinking about this, the tea man had wandered off upstairs and found Jay’s (that’s his name by the way) phone. Then he went back downstairs and into the kitchen and picked up a knife that was on the counter. He wondered what it was, so he consulted Jay by tapping him and showing him what he had found. Jay backed off, knowing what one of the sharp pieces of metal could do. The tea man, who had no knowledge of this thing that could inflict pain, stepped towards him and jabbed with it. Jay fell. The tea man just stared, not knowing what happened. Jay knew. He was dying. And no one knew about it. What qualifications can people get? “We don’t tend to help people get qualifications now. Instead, we give people a purpose in life” People can end up on the streets for various reasons. These could be having a bad start in life (trouble with abusive parents) to losing out on an education because of other issues at home. People, if they don’t have an education, can’t go to certain colleges or universities and their life is thrown off course. How do Friends First help this problem? Friends First give people a purpose like being able to buy a house and support a family. Friends First provide people with an education to help homeless in the working world. They serve homeless by using the acronym BLESS: Begin with prayer Listen Eat Serve Story We raise money for: Friends First Eloise Renouf Two staff members came in from Friends First to talk to us about the charity and the type of work they do. Friends First is a homeless charity to help those homeless to find a purpose in their life again. For example, they used to meet the homeless needs and they would have a shelter for homeless. Furthermore, the charity would help others to get qualifications to give people a purpose in life. Recently, they have narrowed down on numbers so that they are able to work closely with others to get a fulfilling relationship with the homeless. It is a Christian charity serving to show God’s great love for us. What is the story behind Friends First? “We started up around 25 years ago with the inspiration to help the homeless on the streets of Brighton” Since Brighton is the second most popular city for homelessness because of its tourist industry and the fact that it is highly populated. This is a good place for begging for the homeless. Friends First exist to help these homeless to survive in the cold winters. Since the house opened, Friends First have been able to afford to house several homeless when they are training to get a job. The house opened up 13 years ago. “Helping others is more rewarding than receiving” Danny, Team Leader at Friends First. How many are helped? “We are cutting down the amount of people we help so that we get a good relationship with these people” The homeless are valuable because they are human beings like us and deserve the same treatment. That is why Friends First support these people with care and comfort. In about a year, because they have cut down on the income, Friends First aim to help 25 people. However, in Brighton and Hove, there are about 100-200 homeless. This can vary from those who camp in tents to those who are actually registered homeless by the council. Do you ever have any problems? Sometimes being on the street can drive you a little mad and it can have an effect on your emotions towards others. This makes it hard sometimes for Friends First to help the homeless because the homeless do not want to share their problems because they bottle it up inside them. It’s our time to rise up against suffering in our lives and change it for the better of the future!
