CLUBS
NO CLUBS THIS WEEK except: SOS in the morning and Pet Club on Thursday lunchtime.
SIDCUP SPORTS CLUB
Upper School games lessons on a Monday are in full swing, although there has been some confusion over
collection of the children now that after school clubs have finished for the winter months. Ideally, if children
could be collected straight from SSC at 3.45pm, this would be beneficial in two ways. Firstly, the children
would receive an extra 45 minutes of specialist games teaching each week and secondly, we would not have to
rely on minibuses and traffic when getting the children back to school by 3.45pm. As written in the original
letter, if you have younger siblings at school, we are happy for you to collect them first and we will wait with
your child at SSC until you arrive.
If there are exceptional circumstances, or if your child usually attends Playzone, we will of course bring them
back to school. However, if you would like us to bring your child back to school, leaving SSC between
3.00pm and 3.30pm in minibuses, this can be arranged, but you must stick with this choice. It is impossible for
us to plan how to get children to and from SSC if parents change their mind on a weekly basis. Therefore, if
you are unable to collect your child from SSC at 3.45pm on Monday afternoons, please email
the School Office this weekend so that we have this decision recorded by Monday afternoon.

As the weather has changed, children must come fully prepared with the correct kit. Please could you ensure
that children wear vests or skins under their PE kit and have their full tracksuit with them. They may also
wear a hat and gloves if necessary. All children will continue to require football boots, shin pads and football
socks every week please.
DEPUTY HEADLINES
We returned from half term to some exciting changes at St Olave’s. Our newly designed St Olave’s restaurant
launched to much excitement from children and staff. The children all have designated tables that they sit at
(named after vegetables just to continue the healthy eating theme!) and when they enter the restaurant, they
go straight to their seats and enjoy freshly prepared crudités as their ‘starter!’ Tables are invited one at a time
to the servery to choose their main course and the children then carry their plates back to the table to eat.
When they have finished their main course, the table captains (which change on a weekly basis) clear the plates,
knives and forks and take dessert orders. They then serve their friends and clear the tables, before the children
leave to enjoy their playtime. The response from the children has been incredible. There is very little food
waste as the children are eating everything on their plates. The atmosphere is greatly improved as the children
no longer have to queue for their food and there is lunchtime learning on the tables to prompt discussion for
all ages. Obviously, where we need to change lunchtimes due to swimming lessons or Upper School games,
there have been some teething problems. However, these have been dealt with superbly by our lunchtime staff
with the support of all teaching staff and the children have been very sensible and mature. We have all been
impressed with the table manners that the children are using and by the amount of children who have tried
something new this week. One example was a child who said “Miss Holloway, I’ve just eaten a baked bean!”
Four children from Year 5 went along to Old Palace School in Croydon on Monday to take part in a Maths
Challenge. We were very proud of Ajmal, Emily, Rania and Matthew who participated brilliantly in some very
challenging problem solving activities. We look forward to lots more of the children being able to represent
the school as the year progresses.
On Wednesday, the school was rather quiet for a change! We bade farewell to Year 4 along with Ms Scott, Mr
Shea, Mrs Kiley and Mrs Howard as they travelled down to Arethusa in Kent for their residential trip. However,
it was rather busy under the bridge, as Year 5 children went off to the cinema at Greenwich to watch a film
about the International Space Station, linking to their science topic this half term. They were given a talk by
someone who has worked for the Space Station and learnt about the exciting career opportunities that are
available in this field. Year 6 also set off to Greenwich, but they headed to the Maritime Museum as part of
their study of Shackleton and his journey to Antarctica. When Year 1 children got on the coach after lunch to
go to their penultimate Forest School visit there were very few children left! But I was delighted with the
reports that I have had from staff and children about their trips and the wonderful learning opportunities that
have occurred.
Today, the Year 3 children went by train to the National History Museum as part of their topic of Pre-History.
They had a talk about fossils by Mary Anning (or someone dressed as her!) and had some time to explore the
museum. We then waited for the Year 4 children to arrive back from Arethusa, which they did, tired but happy
and full of stories about the food, talent shows, the food, high ropes, the food, kayaking and…the food!
The week has not yet ended for us here at school, as tomorrow we shall be welcoming lots of current and
prospective parents to our first Open Morning of the year. Present Year 6 pupils and ex pupils will also be
attending, and I am extremely grateful to all the parents who have offered to give up their precious Saturday
morning to act as a guide or to ferry their child to and from school. Again, it is this incredible support that
makes St Olave’s such a wonderful place to work.
I look forward to welcoming you to the Year 1 and 2 Parent Sharing afternoons on Monday and Tuesday and
seeing you at Parents’ Evenings on Wednesday and Thursday next week. I am sure you will be delighted with
the learning opportunities available for your children and the high quality work that they have produced. I wish
you all a relaxing weekend; hopefully we will have a break from the rain at some point tomorrow!
Kind regards

Pet Club
We started a new half term with a new group in Pet Club. The children were lucky enough to have a ‘feline’
visitor who popped in to see them. The photos below show the lovely Timmy, a 12 year old tabby cat. He
was so well behaved. And of course, it wouldn’t be Pet Club if we didn’t have a visit from some of the
teachers!! (also see below).
Thank you to Mrs White and Luca for bringing Timmy in.
