Newsletter
Issue 176
27th January 2017
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a very busy start to the Spring term and it has been so pleasing to see the children
settle quickly into their routines after the exciting festive holiday. This term, in our Assemblies, we
have introduced our new Windlesham School Code of Conduct and we are all working hard on
developing this with the children. We have included the key elements of this in this Newsletter
and we look forward to sending you all further details in due course.
The weather, this term, has started very cold so please may I remind all Parents and Carers to
make sure that children have the correct Windlesham School fleece hats, scarves and gloves.

WINDLESHAM SCHOOL SPORTS AND CLUBS
SWIMMING GALA
It was an outstanding afternoon for the Windlesham Swimming Team at the Lancing College Mid Winter U11 relay gala. The school was represented by 3 very
strong teams which showed the strength of depth that we have. Windlesham won
Gold and Bronze medals in both the Freestyle and Medley relay events, an outstanding achievement in view of the very strong opposition from other schools in
Sussex and other counties in the SE region.
CHESS CLUB
The Chess Club is now running on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes for boys and
girls interested in learning how to play chess at tournament level and going on to
deepen their understanding and improve their game. In the process, we aim to
play some serious games in a quiet environment.
Both groups have been entered into the Delancey UK Schools’ Chess Challenge
which will run as a single 7-round Swiss tournament this term. There are small prizes for good results and a School Champion 2017 trophy for the winner. The top scorers will also qualify for the
area Megafinal later in the year (date to be announced) which qualifies players for the Southern
Gigafinal, with winners going on to the national Terafinal in August. The Chess Challenge is intended to introduce children to chess at a young age when they can make rapid progress if
they have the motivation. They enjoy the challenge of competing and along the way, learn the
value of careful study and concentration.
In September, we intend to enter a team in Sussex Junior Chess’s Primary Cup for under U11s, the
first and most popular of the Inter-Schools Cup Competitions, which generally involves over thirty
schools playing in four divisions. Sussex has some very strong junior players - girls and boys - many
of whom have played for England, so the standard is high.
MINI MILE RACES
Over the Brighton Marathon Weekend 7-9 April, thousands of people will be running to raise
money for charity and beat personal goals. This year, we would like Windlesham pupils to have
a go at the challenge and join the Mini Mile event on Saturday, 8th April.
The event is open to pupils over the age of 7, so if you are in Year 2 or above, sign up with your
friends to run as part of the Windlesham School team. What is even better this year is that the
normal entry fee of around £8.00 has been sponsored and so it is free if you sign up quickly.
This year’s charity is Cancer Research UK. So perhaps you can donate your entry fee to support
the charity. Alternatively, offer to do a couple of extra chores at home, donate a week’s pocket
money or gain sponsorship to run the mile!

Windlesham School News
Windlesham School is introducing a Windlesham School Code of Conduct as part of a new behaviour policy which will be published in full and sent to Parents and Carers shortly. We have formulated 5 pertinent guidelines to help pupils achieve their potential from school life and beyond. Over the course of this half term, we are working our way through these themes with our
pupils in a variety of ways throughout our curriculum and extra-curricular activities.

Year 2 Roman Day
On Wednesday last week, Year 2 had a visit from Minerva, the Roman goddess of war,
wisdom and art. The day was fun packed. The children learned about Roman soldiers
and the Roman way of life. They all had the opportunity to design and make a ceramic
mosaic tile. Minerva showed us how they use make-up to create battle wounds in films.
The children were able to have a fake black eye, wound or scab.
Owlets - Fun with the Snow
The Owlets children made the most of the snow that fell one evening this month and
was collected by their teachers. They made their own snowman ”Mr Chilly” in the
water tray. The children explored the texture of the snow and observed how long it
took to melt. Some of the children were inspired to draw their own pictures of snowmen
using chalks on black paper.
