Converting Between Systems
Ratios can be used to help convert from one measurement system to
another. However, you need to know the conversion rates.
Example: Convert 3 miles to kilometers.
To convert from miles to kilometers we need a rate to
multiply by that compare kilometers to miles.
Length
Capacity
Mass
1 in. = 2.5 cm
1 qt = 0.95 L
1 oz. = 30 g
1 ft. = 0.3 m
1 gal = 3.8 L
1 lb. = 0.45 kg
1 mi. = 1.6 km
3 miles x 1.6km/1mile
mile = 3 x 1.6 km = 4.8 km
Convert the following measurements.
1. A school ruler has metric on one side and customary
units on the other. If the ruler is 12 inches long, how
many centimeters long is the ruler?
2. In the United States, speed limits are given in miles
per hour. In Canada, they are written in kilometers per
hour. What would a speed limit sign say in Canada if it
was equivalent to a sign that said 65 miles per hour in
the United States?
3. Carla’s SUV can hold 30 gallons of gasoline. She is
visiting family in another country and needs to fill up
her tank, but the gas station sells gas by the liter. About
how many liters will Carla need to buy?
4. Mikel has a pen pal in France. He wants to tell his pen
pal a little bit about himself. He knows that he is 62
inches tall, however his friend measures in centimeters.
Convert his height to centimeters.
5. Mikel’s pen pal writes back that he is 1.625 meters tall.
Who is taller?
6. Lisa is ordering sand from the internet. On one site she
found sand on sale for $2.25 per pound, and on the
second site she found 5 kg of sand on sale for $14.00.
Which is the better deal?
