Shrek

Sullivan ENG I Advanced - TKAM Characterization Project
Assignment: analyze the character traits of the characters in TKAM
Task: You will create four character maps detailing the character traits as developed by the author. Decide on a maxim or
“law of life” that represents each character. You do not need to use a maxim given on the reverse – these are just
suggestions. Your maps must be neat and specific – citing direct quotations from the novel and must include all of
the required elements as listed below. Complete the maps on printer paper. See the rubric for point values.
Requirements: analyze each of the four main characters in part one: Scout, Jem, Dill, and Atticus. For each
character, list:
a) Characteristics: personality traits or qualities of the character’s personality, a quote that
demonstrates that, and an explanation that explains how that quote demonstrates those character traits
b) Physical description: a quote indicating the description, and an explanation of how that physical
description is used by the author to explain the character traits of the individual
c) Emotions: emotions that this character demonstrates generally throughout the novel, a quote
demonstrating those emotions, and an explanation of how that quote explains the character’s
emotions
d) Maxim: A maxim or saying (not from the novel) that represents the character and an explanation of
WHY that maxim suits that character, with a quote from the novel that supports your choice (see back
for examples of maxims – you may and should use your own to define each character)
This should be done on printer paper – you may fit up to two characters on a page. You may type and print double
sided or hand write. DO NOT USE NOTEBOOK OR CONSTRUCTION PAPER.
The way you organize the information may look different than the example, but you MUST have all four categories
and meet all of the requirements required. This must be done in a graphic way similar to what is shown below:
Characteristics: Misunderstood ogre that
just wants his swamp back - honest, deep

thinking, brave, and loyal.

and good looks, but people used to think that I was
a monster…and for a long time I believed them.”
Clearly he’s been affected by people’s judgment.
he is an ogre. “Look, I'm not the one with the problem, okay?

It's the world that seems to have a problem with ME! People
take one look at me and go "Aargh! Help! Run! A big stupid
ugly ogre!" They judge me before they even know me - that's
why I'm better off alone...” The judgment of others is the
driving force behind the plot of the entire movie.
Grading Rubric:
All four main characters are analyzed as shown above in a graphic display
which clearly demonstrates an understanding of the character – not a list
For each character, a-d listed above are included along with a thorough
explanation of each required area
Direct quotes are used in each category for each character
Maxim for each character is appropriate, and a justification for that
maxim is explained based on a quote from the novel
Neatness/Effort put forth is evident
