Job Description Head of Sixth Form Leadership Scale (Executive Team) ISR L10-L12 Reporting to: The Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher Executive Focus: Head of Sixth Form (Post 16); More Able Students (11-18) Operational Foci: The Strategic Leadership and day to day management of the Sixth Form. Maximising the achievement of Post 16 learners and the provision and outcomes of More Able Students. Responsibilities: You will be responsible for the strategic development of the post 16 learning in the school including; the efficient day to day management of the Sixth Form; the care, guidance and support for post 16 students; maximising their academic and other achievements and the promotion of the sixth form to Moulsham High School students and the wider Chelmsford area. You will also be responsible for the effective recruitment, induction and supervision of sixth form students and liaising with parents where necessary. The other whole school responsibility area is that of More Able Students, whereby you will ensure the provision and outcomes of these students is maximised. Generic Executive responsibilities include: Attend all meetings of the Executive Team, as required, and implement any decisions resulting from these meetings which are relevant to this job description. Responsibility for ensuring all pupils adhere to the School Rules and Pupil Code of Conduct and ensure that all staff implement these in line with the school’s discipline policy. Responsibility for the Performance Management arrangements for the Assistant Head of Sixth Form, Sixth Form tutor team and TLR holders as designated. Chairing any working groups and making presentations of policy as required. Servicing, and where necessary, convening papers for the relevant Governing Body Committees. Carry out the duties as laid out for a member of the Executive Team, ensuring good levels of behaviour and student safety on the site at all times, including outside of lesson time. To teach as directed by the Headteacher. Leadership and Management throughout the school, including the day to day running of the school. 1 January 2017 Specific Responsibilities: Recruitment and Marketing of Sixth Form, including Post 16 options and admissions: o Ensure the timely production of prospectus and other promotional and recruitment material and arrange information and induction events for parents and students. o Oversee the application, selection and interview process, liaising with the SPL Yr 11 and other schools where necessary. Working specifically with our own KS4 students to actively promote and encourage MHS students to stay on into our Sixth Form (in particular the More Able Students). o Ensure a smooth induction and recruitment programme post-results in August (note an expectation of your availability during certain days/ dates). o Work alongside the Deputy Headteacher and Heads of Faculty to plan the Post 16 curriculum offer. o Support and actively promote a positive Sixth Form identity and reputation in the local community. To promote and ensure high quality teaching and learning Post 16. o Ensure students are informed and guided towards making appropriate course choices on entry. o Set aspirational targets for all Sixth Form students based on prior attainment and aspirational targets (agreed with the DHT/HT) for the Sixth Form as a whole. o Maintain effective regular tracking and monitoring of the progress of each student, meeting with, and intervening with any underperforming students. This includes meeting with Subject Leaders or KS5 RAPs where a class or subject is underperforming, and communicating concerns to parents. o Observe Sixth Form lessons and regular Post 16 learning walks, providing individual and generalised feedback to colleagues and post holders. o Work with teachers and HoFs to ensure that teaching strategies are appropriate to the needs of students, are challenging and raise standards, including to deliver whole school training on KS5 T&L. This includes leading a Post 16 T&L working group. o Work with students to develop their sense of responsibility, time and selfmanagement and independence of thought and learning. This should be geared towards them being able to develop their skills (during study periods) in order to cope with the movement to linear exams. To promote student achievement in Key Stage 5. o Ensure all students have truly aspirational targets in all subjects. o When tracking student achievement, highlight (& praise) high achievers, whilst intervening immediately with underachievers. o Ensure information is available for students (& parents) to measure their own progress and make decisions about their future. o Maintain an up to date overview of overall performance for reports, reporting to governors, parents evening etc, and to regularly update the Sixth Form SEF. o Ensure maximum attendance and punctuality for Sixth Form students. Welfare and guidance of Sixth Form Students. o Monitor and enforce good attendance and punctuality, with regular communication to home when needed. o Promote and safeguard the welfare of all students. o Ensure Sixth Form students receive appropriate and timely advice about Careers and Higher Education and support for the relevant application process. o Celebrate the success and achievement of the Sixth Form. 2 January 2017 o Maximise the opportunities for Sixth Form students to play a full and active part in the life of MHS, including taking on responsibilities such as: Role Models, Senior Sixth positions, School Council, House Leaders etc. o To develop the enrichment programme and offer open to every Sixth Form student for themselves and for the local community. The programme should be developed so that every personal statement is exceptional and that the student’s next steps are fully prepared for. o Oversee the administration of the Sixth Form bursary. o Instil in Sixth Formers an acute awareness of their importance as role models within the school and monitor dress code, behaviour and the impact of Sixth Formers on the school and wider community. Strategic and day to day management of the Sixth Form. o Take responsibility for the coordination, support and effective functioning of a team of Sixth Form tutors, including the daily tutorial sessions and assemblies. o Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of the Sixth Form by producing a termly Sixth Form SEF, which should form the basis of a three year development plan and which should inform termly actions. This plan should complement the whole school SIP, and should also ensure that the Sixth Form works towards being outstanding within that three year timeframe. o Ensure Sixth Form events are planned well in advance and are included in any calendar planning whole school, then to ensure these events are run smoothly and effectively. o Research best practice Post 16, including (proactively) liaising with other outstanding Sixth Form providers to be forward thinking. Whilst funding remains, this includes being the lead advocate for PIXL6 and other such groups. To regularly analyse the progress data for More Able students, liaising with the relevant key RAP (HAPs) and Heads of Faculty, to report on progress, and overseeing the implementation of all intervention required to ensure all More Able students make at least the expected progress (a positive Progress 8 score at GCSE & A*-B grades at A Level). Overseeing the review, management and implementation of the More Able Policies and associated activities. This to include liaising with the DHT on provision for the More Able students. The focus here should be to retain more of our higher ability students into our own Sixth Form and for students (even lower down the school) to aspire and apply to Oxbridge/ Russell Group Universities. To strategically lead and be the identified lead person in the school for all More Able provision. This includes identification of students, their provision, monitoring and intervention, CPD for G&T, IAG to G&T students and their parents, maintain and update the More Able register and KS2 More Able liaison. To be the lead advocate/ practitioner for More Able teaching, demonstration outstanding practice, and co planning/ co delivering lessons with staff for More Able practice. This includes staff regularly observing your own lessons to gain ideas for More Able delivery. To be a member of the Teaching and Learning Community. To be part of the quality assurance team.
