How to Be An Advocate

When we contact you about an issue of concern to our
hospitals, here are five things you can do:
1 Become familiar with the issue. Information will be
posted at munsonhealthcare.org/advocacy.
2 If you know a state legislator or a member of his or
her staff, call them. Let them know you are deeply concerned about the impact the proposed bill would have on patients, taxpayers, businesses, health care providers, and communities.
3 If you don’t have a personal relationship with them, contact your state representative, state senator and
their key staff by phone or email (see contact list) and explain how their vote can help protect your hospital, community, and others who will be
affected. Sample letters you can use as a starting point will usually be available on the website
listed above.
4 If you have personal knowledge of the issue,
write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Explain how this legislation would impact you or others personally. Use personal experiences
and insights along with the background information provided.
5 Share this information with your family and friends
and encourage them to help.
