DECEMBER 2013 Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club Newsletter WELCOME TO THE DECEMBER EDITION Busy, busy, busy will be the theme for this month. Stretching the credit card to its limit and competing in the open category of combat Christmas shopping. Joy to the world. Please don’t forget that the Gear shop has a great range of items for sale that removes yourself from the above to situations. Drop in, have a browse and walk away content and uninjured with your purchase. The City beach carnival for the seniors was a ripper. The surf conditions provided a challenge for every aquatic competitor. Little Uppy was out in the rubber duck for so long I received a call from immigration regarding his whereabouts. Volunteering is an intrinsic quality and that day he took one for the club….well done Alex. Being December this means that to all the new members we are half way through the season. I hope your transition into the rather damp world of surf lifesaving has been positive. Some of the new members will be up for assessment this weekend to become lifesavers in their own right. This will be a fantastic achievement when you consider their previous individual journey. The club will have some Christmas activities for the kids, usually the ‘fatman’ will arrive on the beach on a December Sunday morning…stay tuned. The New Year’s celebration will be on the 31st of December so book that in. The theme for the night will be favourite movie stars…it will promise to be a great evening so to the new members come along and impress the crowd with your costume. GYM AND TOILET CLOSURE NOTICE Due to painting of toilets and gym facilities along with sandblasting of mural, these facilties will have limited access and in some cases unusable during the week Monday 9 December throught to Friday 13 December. We apologise for the inconvenience and trust you will be considerate during the week. Missing – Malibu patrol. The patrol captain Mark Hills has officially listed his patrol as missing. This patrol, once the sunshine amongst the backdrop of try hards has diminished to about 6 dependable individuals. Please come home your captain is missing you. Next patrol 15th December 2-5pm So, in this politically compromised world, is it Merry Christmas or happy holidays? What ever the message, its about casting your view a little wider and accepting the fact that this is a time for people to enjoy each others company, share a meal, have a drink and to receive at least one gift that will never be used but cherished. Take care. MULLALOO SURF CLUB NUMBER PLATES $300 Ed Available from the office. Yes it’s nearly that time of the year already. Christmas is just around the corner and I am sure that you are feeling the same as me asking “Where has the year gone?”. It has been a very busy year and none more than over the last few weeks when on one weekend we ran the Club “Mullaconda” event on the Saturday, the Wave Warriors event and a Re-qual on the Sunday. What makes this easier is the number of people who volunteer to help out and assist with the events. It is great that we have volunteers who help out to make these events so good for all who participate, unfortunately, it seems to me that it is mostly the same people that I see again and again. We are a voluntary organisation and we rely on our members to help out for all events. When a request for helpers goes out it would be great to see more of our newer members involved as it is an excellent way to get to meet others within the Club and it helps us so much. Speaking of the Wave Warriors event, this was a new format carnival for Juniors and if you were are part of it, I’m sure you will agree with me that this was a really enjoyable event. It brings a fresh approach to carnivals and all who attended had a fantastic time. The event organisers were really impressed with our Club as the hosts and our ability to provide water safety, officials and a work party that were so professional. They have indicated that we will see them back next year at our Club and we would certainly be happy to have them again. It is getting busy again with competition, with a number of Carnivals recently being run. Last week we had Senior Carnival and then this week will be a Junior Carnival. We have had some excellent results already and I am sure we will have many more to come. Carnivals, however, are not just for our top competitors. I have always felt that carnivals should encompass all those who want to be involved in Surf Sports, so if you are hesitating about competing, just get involved and be a part of it as it is more about challenging yourself rather than winning. Speaking of challenging yourself, once again, we will be running our Ted Scott marathon on Sunday 22nd December. This is one of our traditional Club events and again it is about being involved. The event was created by one of our Life members Ted Scott to challenge lifesavers to demonstrate their endurance skills with swimming and running from one end of the beach to the other. It is about participation and is open to Seniors and Juniors alike. Seniors and U/14’s with an SRC will be able to complete the open event and we want as many people to be involved as possible. If you are not able to complete the event on your own, form a team of 2, 3, 4 or more to be a part of it. We also hope to see a visit from the big man in Red for all of the little and big kids at the Club. Our lifesaving area has been very busy, again with Patrols extending to full days as of last weekend. It has been a great start to the season with some very busy days and DECEMBER 2013 CARLO TENAGLIA it certainly feels that the beach is getting busier than previous years. It is great to see so many people on the beach patrolling for the community. I would also like to thank our Manager of Life Saving Andrew Manning and his team with the Abalone Patrols who last week were involved in 4 rescues in difficult conditions. Without their presence, I’m sure we could have seen fatalities on those beaches. Sadly we are also putting at risk our members in these difficult conditions to rescue people who are clearly unable to cope with the waves and swells. Also thanks to Mark Hills who has initiated a new campaign of posters and leaflets ABALONE FISHING SAFETY which are now present BE A.W.A.R.E. at the Abalone Patrols. This is a great ALWAYS – ASK A LIFEGUARD initiative and will also FOR SAFETY ADVICE hopefully save lives, well done Mark. Est. 1961 The Board and Management Team have been very busy working on a number of initiatives to support our new Strategic Plan. We have almost completed the fit-out of the Ground floor Competition and Lifesaving equipment areas. Those who are using these areas, will agree access to all equipment is much easier for all activities. We are also currently working with the COJ to get the roller doors fixed/replaced. A proposal has also been submitted to the COJ to make minor changes to the Gym entrance and space near the kiosk and we are waiting for approval before scheduling that work. In the meantime we will be repainting the Club change rooms and the Gym. Some notices will come out when they are unavailable. Recently, the Executive Management team and some Managers have worked on a proposal for the refurbishment of the 1st Floor. The proposal provides for some options to refurbish all of the areas on the first floor including the Lounge, Hall, Bar and Office areas, to provide better use of these areas for members and the community and opportunities for additional income to the Club in line with our Strategic Plan. The Board has accepted the proposal in principle and we will now be looking at more detailed costings and exploring potential funding sources. More details will be available shortly. Meanwhile, the Board and GM’s have continued with planning around activities to achieve the outcomes of the Strategic Plan. We are currently presenting the plan Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club • www.mullaloosurf.com.au • email: [email protected] • ph (08) 9307 7766 Page 2 Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club Newsletter DECEMBER 2013 From the President – Carlo Tenaglia continued... to our major stakeholders and the response has been overwhelming support. This engagement will hopefully support us for our future endeavours. So the Board and GM’s have been working like the proverbial “Ducks Feet” at the moment. If you don’t know what that means, grab me on the beach and I will be happy to explain. the Club. At present it will be proof of concept until we are able to deploy a full system. More information will be available on our Website shortly and throughout the Club. So it continues to be a very busy time for the Club, and I look forward to taking a very short breather during the Christmas and New Year break. So on behalf of the Board and Management team, we wish you a very merry Christmas break and Happy New Year. Stay safe at the beach and whilst enjoying your festivities as we look forward to the busy part of the Season. Recently you may have noticed, the Club has been involved in some shark mitigation activity. The Club has been working with our local member the Hon. Albert Jacob MLA, the office of The Minister for Fisheries and the Department of Fisheries to improve the detection of tagged sharks at See you on the Beach. Mullaloo Beach. As a result, last Thursday, the Department Carlo Tenaglia of Fisheries, moved 2 tagged shark receivers with Satellite President communications to 600m in front of the club and 400m north and 400m south. This will improve detection in front of the Club and notification via twitter with a 2 minute or greater delay. On the same day, work that Mullaloo SLSC has been involved in, culminated in the deployment of it’s own receiver 200m in front of the Club. This receiver (orange buoy) will also detect tagged sharks, however, it will communicate in real time directly to our tower. We will be doing some initial range testing with Curtin University and the development of command and control systems to support the detection of sharks. This system will be world first technology Mullaloo SLSC deploys it’s own receiver to develop systems for detecting tagged sharks and immediately notifying beach users. Thanks to and it is a great initiative from RPS MetOcean, Whitfords Sea Rescue and the guys at Mullaloo SLSC. POSITION VACANT A volunteer is required to oversee the IT systems of the club. Suited to members with a broad knowledge and understanding of IT. This is a new role with responsibilities encompassing recommendations to the executive General Mangers on hardware and software purchases and overseeing their implementation. This will be an interesting position as the Club looks towards IT to assist with expected future growth. The role will initially be reporting to the GM of support services. Email your interest/resume to [email protected] or arrange a chat with Guy Edwards the General Manager of Support Services. What a massive effort and what a great turn out! Thanks to the Trainers and Assessors who keep coming back to assist and the all-important administration support team led by Craig Bull on that first weekend in November. It is greatly appreciated that, when we are down on numbers, people step up and lend a hand – Thanks Craig! • Bronze 3 is also under way – with assessment towards the end of January. The statistics for proficiencies completed to date are as follows: There are several members who have stepped forward this year and made the commitment to join the elite ranks of the Mullaloo Trainers. They are busily working through both the paper jungle and the practical challenges of delivery. Simon Gidley has delivered on two courses and is about to take the lead on another – well done. Watch this space to find out who else is stepping up! • Surf Rescue Certificate = 29 MEMBER ACHIEVEMENT • Bronze Medallion = 115 Some of you will be aware – many may not, but… Barbara Carter, a long-standing member and Life Member of the club has recently been recognised for her long-standing commitment to health practitioner education by being awarded the Educator of the Year at the recent Nursing Awards. Barb has been involved in the education of both nurses and doctors in her speciality area of neonatal emergency care, with a particular focus on neonatal resuscitation. She travels to hospitals and health care services across Western Australia to provide up skilling and in-service to doctors and nurses alike. A • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques = 11 • Spinal Management = 35 • IRB Crew = 14 (in August); 18 (on 2/11/13); Total – 32 to date • IRB Driver = 5 (in August); 8 (on 2/11/13); Total – 13 to date There is a new challenge for the IRB Driver group this year – each person must hold a Recreational Skipper’s Ticket or other department of Transport approved qualification before their IRB Driver proficiency can be renewed. This means that, after 31 December 2013, any IRB Driver who does not meet this requirement will not be able to drive the IRB, anywhere. This is an important part of service delivery and also ensures the club is not exposed to a potential insurance claim if unlicensed drivers operate the IRB. major contributing factor in this prestigious award was Barb’s 20 years of commitment to education in surf life saving. A big CONGRATULATIONS Barbara – well deserved! Anne-Marie Widermanski Barbara Carter Training courses in a nutshell… • Bronze 1 was cancelled due to low numbers. • Bronze 2 is well under way with final assessment due just before Christmas – what a motivation! • SRC 1 has been run and successfully completed. • Adult SRC has been run and successfully completed, despite lower numbers this year. • SRC 2 is in progress, hopefully with assessment before Christmas. Visitors to Mullaloo Beach will have seen that the patrol season is well under way, with the red and yellow flags on display, and our reborn Patrol Trailer resplendent in its new livery and glides across the sand thanks to new bearings, tyres and rims. Thank you to long-time club member Kevin Fettes and the Car Factory for the refurbishment. Thanks also to another long-time, and recently returned club member in Gary McCormick for the bright new vinyl cladding – the patrol trailer stands out as a beacon of safety! It marks up eight years of service this season. DECEMBER 2013 VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED WATER SAFETY & IRB DRIVERS/IRB CREW & FIRST AID members To enable our club to compete at the various Surf Sports carnivals for the season, various rosters of water safety and first aid must be manned. If you are able to assist with any of the below please email your interest to the respective contacts. JUNIOR CARNIVALS Junior Carnival 2 – Sunday 19 January 2014 @ Leighton (Freo) 11am – 4 x water safety 11am – 1 x IRB Driver/IRB crew Country Carnival – Sunday 26 January 2014 @ Denmark 9am – 4 x water safety 9am – 1 x IRB Driver/IRB crew 11am – 2 x First Aid members The first Abalone Patrol is safely behind us and, due to conditions that were calmer than usual, it was incident free. A big thanks to the first of this season’s abalone teams, under the leadership of Steve Dargie. Thanks to all who have indicated their interest in this extension to our lifesaving service delivery. A new initiative has been the development of multilingual signage that was posted at the main accesses to the local abalone hot spots. Whilst it is too early to judge their effectiveness – the signs certainly provide relevant information to a different group of beach users. A reminder - please wear your patrol uniform with great pride when on patrol and don’t downgrade its worth by wearing the uniform in other situations. The beach is our workplace and our uniform distinguishes us from the crowd. Remember – you worked hard to wear the red and yellow! The first SRC group have already swung into action - wearing their uniforms and providing service. That commitment to the training, especially in those cold, seaweedy waters that we know and love early in the season. Thanks to all the beach setup crew and mid week training water safety, your work is appreciated. Remember – many hands make light work, and while pack-up is not as much fun – it still has to be done. Just step up and offer your services – every person’s contribution is valued. Finally – we must ensure that we take care of our equipment. This includes making sure it is used correctly, then cleaned and packed away properly after use. Remember to Tag any damaged equipment and report it to the appropriate person – if you don’t know who, just ask any of the senior club members who should be able to point you in the right direction. DAWN JONES, MANAGER JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT WAVE WARRIORS For November highlights it’s hard to beat the Wave Warriors Carnival and Ironman Nipper Clinic. It was a privilege to host the Wave Warriors Carnival and have other clubs coming up to our beach to share in the experience. The first of it’s kind in WA. Ironman Zane Holmes and his team of coordinators, backed up with a great support from our club members setting up, officiating and doing water safety put on a slick carnival running all age groups and events in the one arena. The commentary was particularly good from Ty Dowker, throwing in coaching tips and bringing in expert race tactical advice from Nutrigrain Ironmen Tanyn Lyndon and Mitchell Miller. The ‘catching the drink bottles’ and ‘dancing’ comps just added to the atmosphere and everyone, it seemed went home happy. Happy with just being part of it, or happy to go home with a medal or two presented by Tanyn and Mitch. A particular thanks must go to the water safety volunteers who spend many cold hours (especially during the pre-season carnivals) keeping our competitors safe. It is a simple formula...no officials = no competition. I would like to thank and continue to encourage all officials for their expertise and time given. I would also like to thank my regular support crew for their countless hours – Jenni and Garry Wood, the Gould family, the Tenaglia family, Jeff Baker and my own family. Looking forward to a great season, with so much going on, we need to share the load, so please offer whatever help you can. Cheers, Sandy PATROL HOURS Over the next two pages is a list of patrol hours as at 6 December 2013. JOIN US ON FACEBOOK Like us on Facebook and keep up to date with club events and activities. www.facebook.com/MLSLSC The activity in this picture is quite plain to see. A man doing mans things in mans clothing. Add a manky pair of thongs, the favourite budgie smugglers and away we go. Commitment to the great Australia tradition; maintaining an immaculate lawn. I just hope that the grass he is cutting is his own? In addition to the general club Facebook page we have a Mullaloo Surf Senior Training Facebook page, primarly focused on informing seniors about Senior Training at Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club. www.facebook.com/ MullalooSurfSeniorTraining Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club • www.mullaloosurf.com.au • email: [email protected] • ph (08) 9307 7766 Page 15
