The following is a rough draft of a student’s essay. It contains errors.
Science Fair
(1) At the same time every year, all of the science teachers in our school become very enthuzeastic about
the school­wide science fair. (2) It is contagious. (3) Their excitement spills over to the whole student body. (4)
This is the time of year that we all anticipate, since the fair showcases the most original ideas no matter how
large or small. (5) I could not wait to get home and start, but I could not think of any ideas for my project. (6) The next day, as my father and I walked down the aisles of the supermarket, my problem was what we
discussed. (7) We talked about ideas as we loaded our groceries into the trunk of the car. (8) Because it was a
sunny day, I became concerned that the ice cream we had bought might melt in the trunk before we arrived
home. (9) “Would the temperature in the back seat of the car be warmer or cooler than the temperature in the
trunk?” I wondered aloud. (10) My father looked as though he were about to reply; instead, he became
strangely silent and just smiled knowingly at me. (11) I was puzzled, but I soon had an idea forming inside my
head. (12) “Of course,” I exclaimed! (13) I was sure I had a fantastic idea for a project. (14) Knowing how
temperatures differ within the different areas of an automobile would be useful and interesting.
(15) After my father and I put away the groceries, I asked him for a favor. (16) “Dad, School and project
supply Sources is a teacher supply store downtown that sells equipment for science projects,” I said. (17)
“Everyone in my class buys his or her supplies there. (18) Would you please drive me there this weekend? (19)
The store has thermometers for sale for less than one dollar each, and I’m going to need quite a few of them.”
(20) Dad smiled and nodded I could not wait to begin.
