The Secret Service
February 17, 2017
Special Agent Bobby Fultz of the
United States Secret Service Jacksonville Field Office will be the
Guest Speaker for the First Coast
Tiger Bay February 17th lunch
meeting. The Secret Service was
created in 1865 as the law enforcement arm of the Treasury Department in charge of investigating and
preventing counterfeiting and its mission evolved into
safeguarding the US monetary system from a wide
range of financial and computer-based crimes.
After the assassination of President William
McKinley in 1901 the Secret Service, then the only
Division in the U.S. government with extensive law
enforcement resources, was also tasked with protecting the nation’s highest elected officials as well as foreign dignitaries at major events. While it is the protection of the president and other officials for which
the Secret Service is best known, most of its work focuses on securing the nation’s financial cyber infrastructure. Recent directives address the need to combat transnational organized crime that targets the citizens and financial institutions of the United States. In
response to the globalization of technology- based
threats, the U.S. Secret Service’s investigative mission
abroad is growing as well. Today, multi-disciplined
forensics experts, investigators and intelligence analysts provide rapid response and critical information
in support of financial analysis, infrastructure protection and criminal investigations. To combat these
crimes, the Secret Service has adopted a proactive ap-

proach, using advanced technologies and capitalizing
on the power of task force partnerships.
For security concerns the Secret Service cannot
provide us with a picture of Special Agent Fultz but
we have taken the liberty of including an artist’s rendition of what he might look like. To the extent allowed by law he will discuss both the behind the
scenes aspect of the logistical concerns in securing the
safety of prominent public figures like the president as
well as the increasing challenges to the security of our
financial system. What are the biggest threats? What
will happen if the internet is compromised and do we
have a back-up system?
We hope you can join us next Friday at our new
First Coast Tiger Bay location at the River Club as we
take a brief hiatus from elections and explore other
political topics like how the Secret Service works.
Next month we will be hearing from the new Sheriff.
We always invite your ideas too for future programs.
FIRST COAST TIGER BAY CLUB meets for lunch every month, except December, on
the 3rd Friday at 11:30 at The River Club, 1 Independent Drive, 35th Floor. Cost for
the event, which includes the wonderful buffet and parking, is $25.
Reservations are required: Call (904) 404-5471 or E-Mail: [email protected]
