2016-2017 Curriculum Blueprint Grade: High School Course Description: Physical Science Unit 3 Chapter 3: States of Matter Approximate Time: First Quarter 2 weeks Chapter Overview This chapter covers the kinetic theory of matter, changes of state, the law of conservation of mass, and the law of conservation of energy. You are introduced to characteristics and behaviors of fluids. You will look at the properties and bahvior of gases, as well as Boyle’s, Charles’s and Gay-Lussac’s laws. 2 weeks Learning Goal Sample Essential Questions 3.1 Introduce the kinetic theory of matter and compare the physical properties of solids, liquids, gases and plasma. Know the role of energy in changes of state. 3.2 Describe specific changes of state in terms of the flow of energy as heat. Explain the law of conservation of mass and the law of conservation of energy. 3.3 See the relationship between an object’s mass and its buoyant force. Know the role of density in an object’s ability to float and the concepts of fluid pressure and viscosity. Learn the three basic principles pertaining to fluids: Archimede’s, Pascal’s and Bernoulli’s principles. 3.4 Distinquish between the three basic gas laws: Boyle’s, Charles’s, and Gay-Lussac’s law Focus Standards/Benchmarks What makes up matter? What is the difference between a solid, a liquid, and a gas? What happens when a substance changes from one state of matter to another? What happens to mass and energy during physical and chemical changes? How do fluids exert pressure? What happens when pressure in a fluid changes? What affects the speed of a fluid in motion? What are some properties of gases? How can you predict the effects of pressure, temperature, and volume changes on gases? http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewCourse/Preview/13114 SC.912.L.18.12 Discuss the special properties of water that contribute to Earth's suitability as an environment for life: cohesive behavior, ability to moderate temperature, expansion upon freezing, and versatility as a solvent. SC.912.P.8.1 Differentiate among the four states of matter. SC.912.P.12.10 Interpret the behavior of ideal gases in terms of kinetic molecular theory. SC.912.P.12.11 Describe phase transitions in terms of kinetic molecular theory. Unit End Product or Teaching Task In this lab you will investigatre the properties and behavior of gases. 3 Gas Laws Lab Gas Law Lab Procedures Writing Recursive Standards 910.WHST.1.2 Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/ experiments, or technical processes.
