June is always an exciting time at Christie Lake Kids. We celebrate the success of our STAR participants in banquets, and we prepare for the summer camp program. We host the best fundraiser in Ottawa; Enbridge Canoe for Kids on Mooney's Bay Beach the first Saturday of every June, and start planning to host and be recipients of a number of other golf tournaments and fundraisers. It gives me great pleasure this June to announce several staff and Board of Directors appointments. Carla Pellizzari – Treasurer Carla is new to the Christie Lake Kids community and will take on the role of treasurer. Sandra joined CLK in spring of 2011 and will be moving on to take on a larger accounting role in the private sector this summer. Sandra has been a dedicated staff member and we all wish her the very best in this new chapter of her life. Updates from Christie Lake Kids Camp! Since mid-April, preparations for the summer camp sessions have gone into high-gear. There was a high volume of camper applications this year, and the registration list was full weeks earlier than past years. Pioneer, Voyageur, Out-tripping and Leader-In-Training (LIT) programs will run for the full summer with a total of about 375 children and youth registered for camp. Home visit staff have been working hard to complete phone and in-person interviews for each camper, and are close to finishing the last set of camper interviews. The summer camp staff list has also been finalized, with a highly skilled and experienced team of over 80 staff members. The summer camp staff will begin training next week, and will complete training on topics such as Fundamental Movement Skills, Mental Health, Child Protection and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (among many others). CLK has also hosted a number of camp rentals, including school groups from Ashbury and Vincent Massey. These school group rentals represent the growth of CLK’s involvement in running education and leadership-based camp programs for Ottawa area schools. Finally, the Christie Lake Camp grounds have benefitted greatly from corporate work groups from Enbridge, Telus, Hydro Ottawa and Royal Bank of Canada. These work groups have each made large physical and financial contributions towards setting the camp site up for an enjoyable and successful summer.
