On April 20, 2010, the
largest accidental marine oil spill in petroleum history occurred
when approximately 4.9
million barrels of oil
were discharged into
the Gulf of Mexico over
the course of 87 days.
To aid in mitigation of
economic and environmental damages, the Resources and Ecosystems
Sustainability, Tourist
Opportunities, and
Revived Economics of
the Gulf States Act (RESTORE Act) was signed
into law on July 6, 2012.
The RESTORE Act
dedicates 80 percent of
all administrative and
civil penalties related to
the Deepwater Horizon
spill to a Gulf Coast
Restoration Trust Fund
and outlines a structure
by which the funds can
be utilized to restore
and protect the natural
resources, ecosystems,
fisheries, marine and
wildlife habitats, beaches, coastal wetlands, and
economy of the Gulf
Coast region.
Currently, $219,782.12
of the RESTORE ACT
funding is available to
St. John the Baptist Parish. To obtain this funding, the Parish must
prepare a Multiyear
Implementation Plan
that outlines the intended use of the funds.
St. John the Baptist
Parish proposes utilizing these funds for
preliminary design
activities of a future
breakwater project.
The rock breakwater
will be located within
Lake Pontchartrain and
will extend from the St.
Charles Parish line to
Ruddock. The structure
will serve to protect St.
John the Baptist Parish
marshland and communities from storm
surge during storm and
hurricane events.
Public participation is
an important part of
the project development
process. Projects are selected based on specific
criteria and meaningful
input from the public.
A public hearing will
be held on August 16,
2016 at the St. John the
Baptist Parish Library
located at 2920 Hwy 51,
LaPlace, LA 70068 at 6:00
PM. The purpose of the
public hearing will be
to discuss and receive
comments on the Multiyear Implementation
Plan. The Multiyear
Implementation Plan is
available online and at
the St. John the Baptist
Parish President’s office
for review prior to the
public hearing. Comments may be submitted
to the Parish through
email or regular mail
until 4:30 P.M. on August
16, 2016.
